Christmas cookie recipes

Mom and I get together and do cookies... we started baking them together when I was in elementary school and just continued after I moved out of the house. Our list generally revolved around the cookies my dad loved while growing up. So we generally do:

sugar cookies
welsh cookies
lace cookies
nut balls

I feel like such a weirdo! In addition to many of the cookies listed in the lists above, two holiday staples in our house are:

Snickerdoodles
Ginger Snaps

Am I the only one? I use my great grandmother's recipe. Delish! The weather is so dark and gloomy here today it makes me want to bake right now!

I love to plan my holiday baking!!! I host a cookie swap between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and it's competitive, so I'm always trying to tweak recipes and make them perfect.

My stand-bys are:
Biscotti - chocolate orange and dried cherry pecan
Peanut Butter
Espresso Shortbread
Chocolate Chip
Chocolate Bombs

Mmmmm.....cookies!!!!

Here's what our cookie trays looked like last year. I had posted a picture in the other thread. Thought I would share it here. I can't wait to get started!

Oh my goodness, your cookies look so good!!

I love the reindeer. I've never seen those before.

Mickeywanabe - That is a work of art!

I do a lot of the ones mentioned plus a Molasses cookie. My kids' favorite, and actually I really like it too, is Candy Cane chocolate chip. If memory serves me correct, you substitute peppermint extract for the vanilla and then add some chopped candy canes. Yum!

I don't think they were. It was a chocolate cookie with white chocolate drizzled over top with crushed candy cane sprinkled on top. I can't find the recipe right now. If I find it I will post it.

Thank you! They are just simple sugar cookies that we decided to decorate. We saw them in a magazine, but they used a peanutbutter cookie. They turned out very cute and we got lots of compliments.

MickeyWanaBe- those reindeer cookies are so cute. I am going to have to try those. :thumbsup2

My usual cookie list is-

Spritz press cookies
Pecan Tassies
Russian Teacakes
Apricot or raspberry cream cheese cookies (kind of like kolachky)

It seems like I am the only one in my family that even makes cookies from scratch anymore. I usually just do them all in one day and have my girls help.

I do:
Sugar cut outs
Gingerbread angels
Rum balls
pep bark
toffee
white chocolate crasin cookies
pb and chocolate cookies
blondies with crushed candy canes
choco chip
toffee cookies

I think that is it. I haven't looked at my list yet, but these are the fam favorite.

Anginetti Cookies (Also known as Angenettes or Anginettes)

3 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. vanilla extract

In large bowl, sift together first four ingredients. In seperate bowl, beat eggs; add orange juice, oil and vanilla. Blend wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Mix well. If dough is too sticky (and it always is for me), add a little more flour. Take 1 heaping teaspoon of dough and roll between hands to form a small "snake". Coil onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 12 - 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. Frost.

*Note: If often helps me to "dust" my hands with flour as I am forming the snake*

Frosting:

1 cup confectioners' sugar
1/2 or 1/4 tsp anise extract (This all depends on your taste; I use 1/4 tsp and find that a little goes a long way)
1 tbl milk
container of sprinkles (rainbow colored sprinkles or green & red sprinkles for Christmas)

Mix all ingredients well. Frosting should be slightly loose. To frost cookie, rub frosting on each cookie with finger. Sprinkle with sprinkles. Let set until dry. *If you think frosting is too stiff, add a bit more milk*

These cookies have been a big hit in my family for decades, especially at Christmas and Easter. These cookies keep best in a tightly covered tin or plastic container, lined with wax paper. It is best not to mix Anginetti cookies with other cookies, as the other cookies tend to absorb the flavor of the anise extract.

Would you mind sharing your two italian cookie recipes?? My moms side of the family always make tons of italian cookies and these two sound like good ones to add to our list. Thanks

On the reindeer cookies, did you bake the eyes, nose, & antlers or did you press them in while the cookies were still warm? Thanks! I think the college students will love making these to share.

Fantasmic23-

Thanks for sharing the link to the cookie swap. I haven't had a chance to visit it, but I may have to try hosting one this year.

It was a little stressful... You have to get the antlers in ASAP after you take them out of the oven so they are secure when the cookie cools! If you get them in while they are warm it works great, but if it starts to cool the cookie crumbles and the antlers are loose. We found 12 cookies per sheet was about the right amount. My mom did the antlers and I did the noses and eyes. Good luck!
