Christians suing for the right to be intolerant

On a side note, I can't find any sympathy for hardcore fundamentalist Christians who feel that they are being discrimated against. Boo-hoo. Doesn't feel too darn good now does it?

So if it's so angering, so hateful, so harmful, to be discriminated against, to have judgement placed on them, to have someone simply dislike you for who you are, why in hell do you think you have the right to do the exact same thing to others?

So is it also ok to say that Black History month is stupid or does this only apply to Gay Pride week?

If I walked past a black person and said the N word its not ok, but if I walked past a gay person I can't call them a gay word (can't think of any lol).

Does this logic apply to all intolerance or just gays and lesbians?

It applies to everyone. And for the record, I celebrate Gay Pride. ;)

Did you see the part where she wrote -not just fundamentalists - because why do we Christians have to feel the need to constantly apologize for the fundamentalists? Do the rest of you want to apologize for the fundamentalists in your religions? Do you atheists want to have to answer for every dumb thing another atheist does.

Fundamentists don't speak for me. They are not the last word on Christianity. Of course we normal Christians get sick of having to apologize for every silly little homophobic twit who gets her 15 minutes of fame.

Yes, yes, there are Christians who are intolerant. The rest of us are here for our daily flogging sir, and even though it's completely beyond our control, we are so so sorry!!!! :rolleyes2

I know that most Christians are not extremists or bigots. One problem with fundamenatlists is that they often claim to speak on behalf of Christianity. Hence the Christian Coalition has an all-emcompassing name despite an extreme ideology (By the way, the Washington Post had an article today on the financial and political woes of the Christian Coalition. I found it interesting that the director hired her daughter to be the the spokesperson and her son in law to do financial work. The daughter and son in law are now divorced---so much for the sanctity of marriage. )

Even though LukeDC uses words I don't know (ameliorated), I tend to agree.

Sorry about that! Ameliorate means to make better, to improve.

Hey, thanks! I'm going to try to ameliorate my vocabulary and use that word sometime this week!

"Ameliorate," though it DOES mean "to make better" isn't used in that sense.:) It is used to mean, "make less worse." What you might do is "ameliorate" what I generally call Post-Graduation Retardation...you know, that total loss of all the knowledge they pounded into your head, especially if you spend your days watching The Wiggles now.

I am, once again, sorry to see all the Anti-Christian people show up and start slamming us. It is hypocritical to say that you support goodness, and kindness and then start spewing hate.

And Joe, you already got your angel face ...but I'll just say that you aren't helping any.

A recent survey by the Anti-Defamation League found that 64% of American adults — including 80% of evangelical Christians — agreed with the statement "Religion is under attack in this country."

"The message is, you're free to worship as you like, but don't you dare talk about it outside the four walls of your church," said Stephen Crampton, chief counsel for the American Family Assn. Center for Law and Policy, which represents Christians who feel harassed.

please everyone, quit harassing the Christians. they sure don't try to pressure their beliefs into your private lives.

I have never, EVER tried to pressure anyone (except you, Dear Sylvester, and that is only because I'm trying to gain salvation for your eternal soul ;) :goodvibes ) into ANYTHING! And all I do is pressure you to stop being so dang blasphemous...it isn't like I try to get you to worship with me.

I think everyone should leave the Christians alone. But, I think everyone should leave everyone alone. Guess that won't happen.

Here's the extent of Christianity for me: try to be nice, go to church, and donate something every week. Last week it was Socks for Poor Mexicans, and this week it was Toothpaste for Battered Women. (Sometimes I wish they'd give us a list at the beginning of the year...)

Well said, ITA.

I AM a Christian, and I still HATE what many of the so called Christians in my community do (the verbal attacks on gays and, lately, immigrants - yet not a peep about the divorcees, glutonous and lawn worshipers among them. It's hypocritical and ugly.). I think eveybody wishes they'd all shut up and do a little more to demonstrate the love of Christ by their actions and not their words. If they did , they'd have more converts.

Are you really saying that it's okay to disparage a group that has majority status and has politicians in their fold?

No, this group (the original post) wants SPECIAL treatment. The college has a no discrimination policy and this group wants to be exempt from having to follow it.They can voice all the hate they want outside of the the property of the university...just like everyone else.

::yes:: ::yes:: I am also a Christian and agree completely.

Speaking out against the hate is not hate speech and does not make one hypocritical.

I guess I just don't understand why she is suing. I read the article and I have read this whole thread.
I don't understand what she wants to do or wants to have the right to do.

Maybe she is suing so that she will be allowed to say hateful things to a gay person? And if the she earns that right, does it make it OK with God? It is never OK to be hateful. I'm not saying she can't hold the belief that it is a sin or even speak up if the topic comes up in discussion. But to be hateful about it? Maybe I just don't get the whole scene.

I suspect that she wants the freedom to counsel gays and attempt to "save" them from their sinful lives. She comes across as that type of zealot.

I still stick to my own philosophy of believing that it's up to each person how to live and that, unless their lifestyle, chosen or inherent, harms someone else, it's no one else's business.

Actually, this group does NOT want special treatment. All they want is the freedom to speak freely. Now the courts may rule in favor of the university or not, but that's the basis of the suit. Not special treatment. If they want to speak out about how foolish Gay Pride week is, or how non-senical Black History month is, they should be allowed to do so. My opinion, but the courts will decide.

I agree with another poster, remember people: Tolerance in itself is a negative term. I for one resent being told I have to tolerate anyone. This country has gotten so far away from the constitutuion it is not funny. I live in the most liberal state in the union NY so I realize that free speech isnt respected unless it reflects the views of the left. Personally I'll stand up for everyone elses rights to free speech, and go ahead bash me all you want, yes I will even go so far as to say I am Catholic, but dont be a simpleton and label religious people bigots because of their beliefs. PS my beliefs about homosexuality have nothing to do with religion, they have to do with biology and physiology, and unless someone can disprove the laws of nature and reproduction youll never be able to change my mind about homosexuality.

Er, you do realize that tolerating people doesn't mean you have to accept/approve of/love them, right? You resent the fact that you have to learn to coexist with all people? Guess what - you do whether you accept it or not but it makes living a whole lot more stressful if you fight it! But obviously you're just reacting knee-jerk to the right wing media so I understand why you're saying what you are.

And, as for the biology argument? Have to tell ya, you're wrong on that one. There are many instances of homosexuality in the whole of the animal kingdom. So the "laws of nature" don't hold up as part of your argument against homosexuality. And reproduction isn't required for a relationship. link

If the 1st Amendment protects the right of a convicted sex offender to write about child molestation and then mail it to other convicted sex offenders, then I guess it protects this, as well.

I don't agree with the message and I'm all for gay marriage (Why not?!), but with recent desicions about the 1st Amendment, I can't say this isn't covered and protected speech. Sad.
