Does anyone have any tips on how to chop mangoes without getting a bowl of mush??? :o

I made the mistake of making Mango Salsa to go with a dish about 2 months ago. DH liked it so much that he's been stopping to get a mango now & then.

The problem is that you're supposed to cut it into chunks - at least in theory. So far, I've been ending up with stuff that would work great for making a smoothie.

Am I letting them get too ripe? Any ideas???

oooh ME ME ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First cut it in half around the big pit.
Then score the fleshy meat part into small squares then pop it out so the skin part of the mango is now indented. Then run a knife along the the flesh part of the mago to remove it. Hope that makes sense.

Yep, what Spinning described is how I learned to cut a mango too...

i just by already chopped mangos from Trader Joes!! :teeth: :teeth:

Well, that makes perfect sense...however, I can't get the segments off the pit so that I can invert the skin. :( :o

Can you buy them while the skin is still green & let them "ripen" at home? Maybe that's my problem?

And Wagamama...I bought dried mangoes (like dried apricots) but the kids devoured them before I got a chance to try them in recipes. :teeth: They love mango!

Thanks for the help!

In our restaurant we get frozen mangos ( like the ones at trader joes) they are pretty good, especially if you are using them in a salsa...what you do is chop them while still half of the way frozen ! Much easier ! At first I was buying fresh but this way is easier....Also add some fresh pineapple to the salsa...We are doing a new entree now with a "blackened" filet of grouper with tropical salsa and it is a big hit !
Enjoy !

Where do you get frozen ones? We don't have a Trader Joe's around here.

yes you can buy them green and they will con't to ripen. Not sure if they will become more red.
You may be cutting too close to the pit. You need to go right along the edge of the pit not around it.

Thanks Spinning. I'll have to try cutting it a little differently next time. My problem is that I'm too cheap to waste anything. I was probably trying to get too close to the pit, but could certainly go back for what's left on it. ;)

i had the exact same problem. a little girl that i was watching wanted a mango, so it started to cut it up. i ended up with a few chunks and mango and a lot of mango mush. it was really a waste of time because by then the little girl decided that she didn't want a mango anymore. anyways, these ideas are great.
