Hiya!

For my DH's graduation party next week, I ordered some fortune cookies with graduation sayings in 'em. They came in today (wicked good price, free shipping coupon, amazingly well packed, the only broken one was the one I ate, and it was DELICIOUS lol!) :thumbsup2

Anyway! DD and I want to dip some in chocolate, and sprinkle 'em with his school colors. Can anyone recommend any tips for dipping them? I want to make sure they're YUMMY, so I'm a little leery of the "chocolate flavor" melting chip things at AC Moore. I've never really dipped anything at all, and I'm not sure how to make 'em so that they don't just melt right off the cookie as soon as someone looks at 'em sideways... Heeelllp!

Thanks in advance :grouphug:

I have dipped lots of things in chocolate, just not fortune cookies. I have used the melts before for dipping and for making lollipops. They work just fine. Most of the time if I don't want a color like blue, I just use chocolate chips - I just add a little bit of crisco shortening before I melt. I dip, put the food on tray covered in wax paper, and harden in the refrigerator

It sounds yummy! Have fun!

You can use just good old chocolate chips. I always add a tablespoon of shorting in mine keeps the chocolate from getting clumpy and keeps it shiny. I put it in the fridge for 5 minutes to set up. It is, for me at least easier if I melt them over simmering water instead of the microwave. If the chocolate starts to harden I just put it over the water until melty smooth again.

I have no tips about the chocolate itself, but I would just dip the "top" of the cookie, above where its folded. That way the chocolate won't fill up inside the cookie and cover up the paper.

You can buy a pretty decent melting chocolate in a little round container at the grocery store. I have found it near the strawberries and in the baking aisle. You just open it, stick it in the microwave and dip. It cools and hardens on the item being dipped. I've seen both dark & milk chocolate.

I've also used chocoloate chips. You could google how to make a dipping chocolate because I think the PP is right...you have to add butter or shortening to get the right consistency.

Sounds fun!

I've never dipped fortune cookies either but I use the Ghiradelli chocolate (both brown and white) from Sam's Club all of the time to make goodies for Christmas.

What PP's have said.

Process question for eating, though....If you dip the elbow of the cookie in chocolate, what happens when you break open the fortune? I see chocolate going everywhere, and if it's warm, it'll melt on fingers (and laps, etc.).

This is what I am HOPING to do with them:

But without the flowers and with dark blue & white sprinkles. If we can possibly manage it; we'll see! LOL

Thanks so much for the tips; we're gonna be trying them this weekend, while DH is out at a school function so that it's a surprise for him. :lovestruc

Use chocolate chips with a little shortening. Before they harden, dip them in blue and white sprinkles.

I say everything is better when dipped in chocolate! :goodvibes

Let us know what happens.

Such a creative wife and DD you both are, your DH going to love it :thumbsup2!!! It's really simple, I use chocolate from the grocery or craft store. You can melt w/double boiler or microwave. I did asst. chocloate bunny lollipops with the grands for Easter and yummy strawberries for my DD's BD last week end. Hope to do a batch for my dear Mom for Mother's Day too! Not only fun to make, but tasty, personable, and very inexpensive! Congrats to your DH too on a job well done! :goodvibes

As PPs have mentioned, chocolate chips are very easy, what we do though, is add Gulf Wax (paraffin..in the baking section) it doesn't change the taste, gives a nice sheen, and makes sure the choccy sets well. It doesn't take a lot, we use a knife to shave it the block and add maybe 10-20 slivers. You'll see the chocolate start to "shine". We also use the "double boiler" method..get water boiling in one pot, and use a metal bowl or smaller pot sitting on the top with the chocolate and wax in it. For the actual dipping, tongs work great! When you take them out, set them on wax paper no matter which method you use :)

Practicing on little pretzel rod "dippers"... butterscotch melts but it's still so STIFF!! Yeesh, might pass on adding butterscotch. Got peanut butter chips, toffee to roll it in, finely crushed walnuts, white chocolate and milk chocolate...

I really AM on a diet...

Cool idea!! can you give the info on where you got them and coupon info?
