Chivalry please-a vent

While I am more than happy to stand I will not make my sons stand, one is too little and the other had a head injury as a young child so I am worried in case he falls. A person may look at my son and think he is rude but that is their problem.
Some people choose not to stand because they have every right to sit if they choose to.

Ok, I would give up my seat, but I have to say that I think it's ok to ask a teenager or young adult to stand so you can sit. I really think alot of them are not even aware what is going on around them. I have asked people to give up their seat for my Mom and have been treated well and politely. I wish people noticed more, but I think it's the way of ipods, phones and such.

I run alot of races and I have noticed people using ipods more and more and their is less talking and fun on the routes(they even tell you not to wear them, but people still do). I think it's sad that they miss so much, but that's the old timer talking.

Well if you feel so comfortable asking a teenager or young adult to stand, then make sure you are comfortable if they tell you no. Again, why would a young adult not be as tired as you are after a long day at the park? Maybe there is a hidden disability with this young adult? I think that is a bit arrogant, don't you?

OMG, what a direction this thread took. . .scary. But then again, I guess some people love being controversial. . .

For the person who said "how does taking your hat off make you more patriotic". Taking one's hat off in a public venue was always considered a way of showing that you accept and respect those around you. Military personnel are taught to take their hats off during flag ceremonies, when they enter buildings and during our national anthem. And almost everyone knows it is not polite upbringing to wear a hat to the dinner table.

As for bus etiquette. . .look, I am just as tired as you when I leave a park I might want to sleep on the bus, but unless you are at the bus stop close to the time I was there, I might not offer you my seat. Why? well, you got there a lot later and have not been waiting so long, so you can use another ounce of your stamina to wait for the next bus.

As for men giving up their seats for the random woman. . .while I think that anyone giving up their seat for me is awesome. I am a woman and choose to be equal with ANY man. I am not fragile, I will not break and I am very strong opinionated. . .also, I might drink you under the table. So WHY WOULD YOU OFFER ME A SEAT AND NOT THAT ELDERLY GENTLEMAN WHO WAS OBVIOUSLY STRUGGLING TO STAND. Okay, done with my soapbox. . .

Why would you think I am being arrogant? I have no problem with someone saying No or I am with someone. As I said I have asked for my Mom and I guess I have been blessed with kind people.
A smile and kindness goes a long way and I find most people respond well.

I won't chime in either way, but I wanted to reply to the previous poster that suggested: "leave the parks before the kids are so tires they are falling asleep."
My 8 year old son will literally run from one attraction to the next for 12 hours. He will then run from the park exit to the bus stop, but the minute those bus light dim...he is out like a light!

I agree. Just because you are a woman, it shouldn't make you automatically accessible.

Did I say that just because a person is a woman they should be able to get a seat??? Please. I'm close to 60...I don't expect anyone to hop up and give me a seat. BUT...if I were standing there, carrying my 18 month old child, with another, older child in tow, yes, I would hope that someone would offer me a seat. That's why I said in a perfect world. I would expect the same if it were a man holding that 18 month old..not just a woman. That's why I said...'a woman holding a child'.
By the way...chivalry does mandate that women be given a seat. That was the whole point of chivalry back in the day of knights and such. Of course, chivaly may have run it's course with so many women getting in a twist if a man holds a door for them, or offers them a seat.

Havent read all the replies, but I'll throw in my reply. I will and usually do give up my seat if it's full and others 'need' or 'deserve' a seat. But if I've had a really long day and just feel like I need to rest, I'm keeping the seat. There will be another bus along soon. I sometimes feel people think they deserve too much though also. I mean, why do you expect someone to give up their seat for you? If it's that important to have a seat, as stated, wait for the next bus and allow a couple of other people that dont mind standing or dont have children on the bus you are on while you wait for the next?

2-It is a sign of respect when you take off a hat when there is a flag ceremony or the nat. anthem is being played. Hand over your heart is showing respect for the flag and nation.

6. Respect. End of story. It's quite rude actually to ignore a funeral procession.

7. Flag etiquette once again. Those are some of the most patriotic holidays in this country! Many people only put up a flag during holidays-some leave them up every day. However, when it is raining or dark the flag should be immediately taken down UNLESS it is an all weather flag and/or lit up at night.

8. To each their own, but this is considered a sign of respect again. Aunt/Uncle can be used for family or people that are considered family. I have no blood nieces or nephews but am called Aunt by children of close friends. Other kids-especially in the military community call me Miss Firstname.

Simple respect and etiquette was pointed out. I guess all of that is going by the wayside along with chivalry.....

Even though I don't believe that you are entitled to any special treatment, it would be nice to see people give up their seats more often to parents carrying children. It can be dangerous to carry a child and hold on to the bus at the same time.

To the OP: Sorry you had a less than magical experience on a Disney bus. It does happen at the end of the day when EVERYONE is very tired and cranky and there's one solution that is univeral and nobody likes it - wait for the next bus.

However, threads about buses belong on the Transportation Board. Regardless, I'd say this one is well played out. Nobody ever agrees on this stuff anyway, everyone has different opinions of what is courteous, expected etc... so we'll just end this one here.
