Chip Card Readers

As a guest, why does this matter?

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the U.S. is the only country that still has the magnetic stripes on credit cards. If someone from another country wants to use a credit card at WDW, but card readers at WDW can't read chip cards, then wouldn't that person be out of luck?

I can't speak for other countries but my Canadian credit card has both a chip and a magnetic strip.

Canadian credit cards have both a chip and magnetic strip on the back. I've never had a problem using my Canadian credit cards in the U.S. using only the magnetic strip. Chip works fine as well.

OK, I keep hearing about how behind the times the US is with regards to chip cards, I just assumed no other countries had the magnetic stripes.

I believe all Disney-Owned stores have the new machines with the chip reader, but they are not activated. You can pay by swiping your credit card, tapping your MagicBand, or using mobile payment such as ApplePay.

I'm honestly very surprised a company like Disney wouldn't be up to date with the chip readers. The EMV liability deadline is now like 2 years passed. With all those people coming through a place like Disney World you would think Disney would want to make sure they aren't liable for fraudulent transactions.

The chip card when used creates a one time code for transaction approval that lessens the risk of fradulant activity.
Well its not all that secure 3 years ago just a few days before our trip the wife's new cc came (new all together not a reissue of an existing account) she used it one time with the chip and it was breached. We found out a fee days before the trip when she went to use the card to pay for something for the trip

I had the same problem. Account was fine until after new card with the chip.

Sure wish I could determine how that is. I stick the card in the machine and the transaction is approved, no interaction needed from me. How is that more secure than a swipe? Anyone could use that card, chip or swipe. I feel the MB is more secure. At least it needs a PIN

We're so behind. When I went to Europe in 2009 everyone used chip cards
Hard to be too impressed with early-adoption of technology.
I think the chips' ability to be dramatically more secure than, well, anything else, is in reality, less than substantial.
Hyperbolic statements notwithstanding, in the end, if scammers want to scam, they'll find a way to scam.
When the chips first came out, they were touted as "all that" but now, they look to be (for the most part) "ho hum."

The way the US implemented them substantially reduced their effectiveness anyway so as we have them, they aren’t all that. They’re more secure when used with a PIN. Banks, etc, said US customers wouldn’t accept that (I doubt that’s the real or only reason though). Dumb decision IMO. I’d be happier to use a simple pin and have more secure cards.

It's more secure because the chip is (as of now) impossible to clone. With magnetic strips, all people needed to do to clone your card was capture the track data on the card (via skimmer, USB card reader, etc), or even just write down your card number, expiration date, and CVV/CID with pen and paper. Many fraud stories involved waiters/waitresses at sit-down restaurants - since the card is typically out of your sight for a time, they could do any one of the aforementioned things to steal your card info. Then once they had your info someone could easily create a duplicate card or just use the info for online purchases.

With a chip card this is no longer possible since the chip constantly creates dynamic codes for auth and approval. If you've ever used a security "token" (RSA SecurID or the like) to VPN into your work network, this is a similar concept for credit cards.

You are right though, that chip and PIN would be the most secure, and it's a point of contention why the US went to chip and signature rather than chip and pin like most of the rest of the world.

All that said, I'm really surprised Disney hasn't gotten on-board with the shift to EMV. The payment card industry has shifted costs for fraud onto merchants with the advent of EMV, perhaps Disney is playing the odds and doesn't have enough fraudulent activity at the parks to be too concerned.

I'm sure Disney will enable the chip readers eventually. The vendor that made the old custom CC terminals is (apparently) out of business, so Disney is replacing all of them.

Maybe they have so many using MB instead of Credit Cards isn't not a priority?
