I was just reading the Flat Stanley thread, and I was thinking about some of my favorite children's books. In the next few weeks I will, hopefully, have my own kindergarten classroom, so I'm looking for ideas to expand my current library, and I thought maybe other people would be interested in expanding theirs as well. What are your favorite children's books to read to your children, or your class if you're a teacher?

My 2 favorites are:

'The Crayon Box That Talked' by Shane DeRolf
'The Kissing Hand' by Audrey Penn (who by the way is doing a book signing at our local Barnes & Noble in a couple weeks!!!!!)

My DS loves Piggy Pie, by Margie Palatini

I can't think of any off hand from my childhood...but "Love You Forever" (I think that is the title).....is a book my friend got me for my babyshower....12 years ago...that is such a nice book!!!!

You know, I have literally hundreds of children books from the past years....do you know if I could donate them somewhere???

I love the Sweet Pickles series (I don't think that they make them anymore so it would have to be an ebay purchase.)

My kids also really enjoy many of the Dr. Seuss and many of the Theo LeSeig books.

OOh! Pick me, pick me! JK :rotfl: It is SO hard when you are starting your own classroom for the first time.

I know you can donate them to Goodwill, or oftentimes children's wards of hospitals.

Oh boy. Let's see, I'd have to have these (ds is 6):

The Giving Tree, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and A Light in the Attic (Sliverstein)

Pumpkin Soup (the pics in this are WOW)
Stellaluna
Commotion in the Ocean
It's Tough (Hard?) to be 5 and Where do balloons go (Jamie Lee Curtis)
The Polar Express
All of the Numeroff books (If you give a Moose a Muffin, etc)
Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type (Cronin)
The Man Who Walked Between the Towers (Gerstein)
Too Many Pumpkins (White)
And if the Moon Could Talk (Banks)
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Barrett)
Jacob had a Little Overcoat
Blueberries for Sal (McCloskey)
Zin Zin Zin a Violin
The Stinky Cheese Man
Anything written by Seuss (Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? is a good one)

I am sure I could recommend a lot more, but here is just a short list of what I could think of off the top of my head. Books that ds has asked to read a hundred times. :goodvibes
What an exciting thing! Building a library is so fun!

I just went up and looked at my bookshelf....there really isn't "hundreds" like I thought...unless my kids still have some in their rooms...or they may be in another closet.

I will go thru them to see if I have "kindergarden" appropriate books....most are kinda "baby" type books....that you would read to toddlers...not sure if those would work for you??? I have quite a few of those "Little Golden books" too....Maybe I can compile a list of what I have....Oh....I should have started by saying "I would be more than willing to send a box out to you!!!"......PM me if you want......

Love you Forever was always a favorite of mine & the kids but my voice still cracks when reading it. :(

You might send a note home with the kids asking the parents for books. I know I had so many when my kids we smaller and have either given away or sold them. The schools can always use them.

There's that one abotu being 5 by Jaime Lee Curtis, my 5 year old loves it.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Actually my kids favorite book is called: The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything..it's a Halloween book, and might be scary to some kids, though.

another favorite is When The Rooster Crowed

All the Dr Seuss books are a big hit

I think I am the only one who doesn't like Love You Forever.
The Mom spying on her son and climbing in his bedroom window when he's a grown up. Bizarre! LOL

all by Eric Carle...my absolute favorite :)
all by Virginia Lee Burton
all by Bill Martin, Jr.
all by Doreen Cronin
all by John Scieszka (sp?) Math Curse, Stinky Cheese Man, True Story of 3 Little Pigs....
all by Julia Donaldson (The Gruffalo, Gruffalo's Child, Room on the Broom, and others)
all by Shel Silverstein
all by Roald Dahl (probably a little old for kindergarten)

I'm taking a children's lit class right now. If you PM me with your e-mail addy, I'll be willing to send you these 5x8 book cards I've been working on. They have the basic book info such as genre, author, title, plot, characters, brief analysis, any awards won, etc. By the end of the semester I'll have collected 45 of those suckers!

So far, my favorites have been by David Wiesner (his wordless picture books are so awesome!), Robert Munsch, and a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head. I'm building up a pretty nice collection at the moment.

Scieszka is so funny! Stinky Cheese Man cracks me up every time I read it to my DD. I wrote my own "fairly stupid tale" called Grubbylocks and the Three Bears and my DD loved it, LOL. :rotfl:

There are so many wonderful kid's books out there.

Some of my faves:

Double Trouble in Walla Walla (the kids go crazy for this!)
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
The Memory String (you'll cry)
Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (kids know this one by heart)
A Story for Bear (awesome pictures)
Parts
Bear Stays Up
Officer Buckle and Gloria

I am so glad to hear another person feels the same way I do.
When it first came out and people were going crazy for it, I would say it kinda creeped me out and people would look at me like I had two heads. (maybe there are others - we could start a club)

Books we love around here are

The Bill Cosby Little Bill ones
Anything by Jan Brett -- Hedgie Surprise - we read that once a week
The Velveteen Rabbit
Any verison of something Cinderella
Diary of a Spider
Diary of a Worm
All the "Biscuit" the dog books
A Plump and Perky Turkey
Halloweiner

I do love lots of other Robert Munsch books my favorite is probably the one where the girls gets the "never come off until you are dead and maybe even later markers"

I LOVE children's books! I read the same books to my preschoolers that you would probably be reading to your K kids. Their favorites and mine are:

My personal favorite ... anything by Leo Lionni - especially Fish is Fish, love it! :flower: Love all his books!

A Mother for Choco
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Coming on Home Soon
Kitten's First Full Moon
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems - probably the book that is requested to be read the most often in my classroom. :teeth: The kids LOVE it!
The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog
Miss Rumphius
Mrs. Bindergarten plans a Circus with the Kindergarten
Go Dog, Go!
The Rag Coat
Polar Bear Night
I Don't Want to go to Bed
Peanut Butter Rhino - always makes the kids roar because the Rhino sits on his peanut butter sandwich and can't find it because it's stuck to his backside. :teeth:

Oh, I love Halloweiner! But I have a daschund. But what a great message too!

Second the Laura Numeroff books
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Piggie Pie
Eric Carle books

If you like "I'll Love You Forever," another good one is "On the Day You Were Born." Just try to get through it with dry eyes reading it to a child!

The little ones in my school library also like the "I Spy" books. They're a huge hit, tattered & torn.

Maurice Sendak ones too,
and Tomi dePaola, though most are probably for slightly older children

It's such fun buying & reading childrens' books.

Did you know they are one and the same? Theodore Geisel=Ted Geisel=Dr. Seuss=Theo LeSieg (spell it backwards!)

I enjoy:

Mary Poppins (like, duh)
My Brother Sam Is Dead
the BLoody Country
To Kill A Mockingbird

Oh, I thought of another one (I don't think anyone said it yet.)
'The tenth good thing about Barney' by Judith Viorst- Love her!

I don't think I'd be able to ask the parents to bring in any since this school is in a very low socioeconomic area. I LOVE children's lit. and took a few classes in college which were required for the ed. department. I have quite a few already, but some of the ones you all have mentioned I had forgotten about. Thanks  Keep 'em coming!!!

Lisa L and Marseeya, PMs coming your way!
