What's wrong with where the G&L board is located? I'm pretty sure teens know that gay people converse with others

If it just a board when G&L's can converse, then can we get a SAHM board? Or even a ladies board?

If you find some of the material here too offensive for a 14yr old then I have a feeling you'd be shocked by some of the stuff they "talk" about at school. They are very aware of social issues as well as sexual ones- whether we face it or not.
As for not wanting your dd to know where to find a gay and lesbian board- well thats an awfully closed minded opinion. That board is moderated just like the rest of them and there is nothing on there that would be inappropriate for a 14 yr old to read.
I don't usually respond to posts like this, but it actually felt wrong to not say something this time.

So you didn't see the crap hitting the fan smilies and the group of mooners????

No, and I just looked again - I don't get it? I see a "stirring the pot" smilie and some rainbows. Where do you see mooners and a fan?

I just wanted to add- that there are posters that step out of line and post inappropraite or crude things. However, they are usually deleted or edited before too long.

That would certainly be up to the owner of this site. You know - the person that ponies up the cash and gets to decide what board makes sense and what doesn't?

They were posted on another thread. Not DIS endorsed smilies.

How else are the gays and lesbians gonna recruit new members if their board is not proximate to the teen board?

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I have no problem with what is posted here on the DIS....if the few crude or off color posts bother you....well.....maybe you should checkout the Playhouse Disney website! :goodvibes I'm sure it is family friendly 24/7. :thumbsup2

...Let's see.... inappropriate smilies, posts that refer to sex, a board for gay and lesbians that is directly below the teen board (nothing wrong with the board I just don't like where it was placed for my teen to find it easily)...

(Bold emphasis mine)

I guess I just don't understand this at all. The Gay/Lesbian board is subject to the same rules as the rest of The DIS regarding post content. Teens know that gays and lesbians exist, and they might even find some educational posts about tolerance on the G/L board--I guess I just don't see the connotation here? :confused3

There are plenty of teens who contribute intelligent, honest and interesting posts here. As always, I'll use sparx, because I think she's an amazingly mature, humourous and smart young woman. :) You'd never know she's 14 (15?) unless she told you. I'm sure her mother (who posts here) keeps an eye on her and has discussed appropriate internet behavior (she certainly has raised a wonderful daughter)! I'm not worried about my ds10, yet, as he thinks MBs are for geeks--his own mom included.

It's up to you whether or not you feel this place it appropriate for your child. Obviously some parents do, some don't, and unfortunately, I'm sure others don't monitor their childs' internet usage. Inappropriate stuff will sneak through on occasion, and the mods do the best they can; but if posts are within DIS guidelines, they are going to stay--regardless if your personal sensibilities are offended or not. Name-calling, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, religious intolerance--those are the posts that offend me--luckily I don't see that many. I honestly am not bothered by some animated mooning smilies or the placement of a perfectly valid sub-board. :)

They were deleted after some else notified a Mod.

This is ONE of the posts that I'm talking about. Not reading material for a 14 year old.

ok, but again. When you allow your teen access to ANY message board you are running the risk that they might see something that crosses your line of appropriate material. There are all kinds of people on the internet and they have all kinds of standards on what they think is appropriate reading. Most of them are not thinking about what your 14 year old daughter should be reading, they are thinking about talking to their own internet friends.

Any message board out there -- there are not Moderators sitting around 24 hours a day reading posts within 10 seconds of their appearance. It can take hours for something to be reported, viewed, and removed.

There has been FAR WORSE put onto the DIS --- than your examples.

so please don't ever get the idea that your Daughter is safe here, there, or anywhere out in cyberland just because the main topic is "Disney."

It is up to you to restrict her access to what you find acceptable, not the rest of us.

Personally I don't see the need for one. But then again, I'm not a lesbian. I don't the posts on that board, so I have no clue what is discussed. But I would think other than the gay days, how does planning a trip to WDW for someone who is gay be different from someone who is straight?

So you don't just have a problem with the location of the board, you have a prblem with the board itself? Should've just said that in your first post.

Yeah, the usual free gift of toasters just isn't doing the trick with that age group.

No matter where you go in life, I'm relatively certain you're going to come across people who say/write inappropriate things.

On a moderated forum like this, we have people that keep on top of these things and pull threads that become inappropriate, lewd, or crass. The sex thread, the carpeting thread - those were yanked and are no longer able to be viewed. I don't know if you expect the mods to have some sort of magic power that enables them to zap lewd posts before they even occur or what, but I think they do a pretty good job of keeping this site as clean as possible. If one takes issue with it and still thinks this place is inappropriate, then perhaps one should find another place to play.

Thank goodness it was removed as it was very inappropriate. What about that thread where the poster talked about about the color of her "drapes" and the "hardwood floors". I am sure you know what I mean. The thread got explicit talking about the color of body hair. Something my 11 yo doesn't need to read and figure out.

I'm assuming that thread was removed too, right?

I'm confused as to the point of the OP. All the threads that she had an issue with were removed. Do you expect the DIS to be able to auto-delete anything that is deemed inappropriate? :confused3

Any message board, even moderated ones, are open to the possibility of inappropriate posts (not even getting into the debate about what's appropriate or inappropriate). The best any site can do is take care of posts/threads as they occur.

If you make a comment like this, then you're obviously judging the G/L board before you have read it. There is a thread there from the Mods welcoming *everyone.* I've posted there, and no one's told this Breeder to go home! :)

I thought they were giving out Ipods? I was going to lie about my age in hopes of getting one. Darnitall!
