My 10 yo had a mishap on the school playground and injured her foot. She cannot put any weight on it, it is in a soft cast, and she needs to use crutches.

She will still be in the cast when we go to WDW, and probably will need the crutches, too.

I'd appreciate any pointers about how to make the trip as easy for her as possible. I'm afraid that she won't be able to go all day or very far with the crutches.

Can we rent a stroller for the week? We are staying on-site. I have requested a room close to the elevators. But even a long walk to the room may be fatiguing for her.

What about transportation to the parks?
Getting on / off rides?

Any tips would be gratefully appreciated.

I would rent a jogging stroller or child's wheelchair with the ability to raise the legs from an outside vender. If you have never walked on crutches before not only do they wear you out, but tend to make arms and armpits and ribs very sore when used for extended periods of time. I would get one of those waterproof cast protectors for use where water might be present.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Check out Post #2 and look at the local suppiers to rent a pediatric wheelchair of a size that will fit him, and ask that a set of crutch holders be installed. It will be delivered to your hotel prior to your arrival and you would return it to Bell Services on departure.

The Disney wheelchairs are not adjustable and do not have crutch holders available.

In addition to what was already posted -
It is easy to bring a wheelchair on the monorail and most boats.
The buses have 2 wheelchair spots per bus where a wheelchair can be tied down for transport. With a folding wheelchair, the person could ride the lift or ramp up, get out of the wheelchair into a bus seat and then have someone else fold the wheelchair and hold it on the bus like a stroller. That can be much faster than having the wheelchair all tied down. There is one post in the disABILITIES FAQs thread that is all about transportation.

For rides, in most cases, the wheelchair can be brought right up to the ride vehicle and then she can transfer from the wheelchair to the ride seat without walking much. It is still helpful to have the crutches to help get into the ride car. There are quite a few rides that have a wheelchair accessible ride car if it is too difficult to get out of the wheelchair.
All the shows and movies have wheelchair accessible spots where a wheelchair or stroller being used as a wheelchair can be brought right in and parked for the show.
