First off, let me say that I live in town. Yes, it's a pretty small town, but it's a town. The streets are paved. There is a stoplight at the intersection. There is a library just a few blocks away.

Despite that, I now have four chickens in my yard. Well, my driveway, really. I don't know where they have come from. They've been out there since last weekend. They've made some kind of home under the bush next to our driveway. I thought they would go away, but they haven't. Now we have a driveway full of feathers (I didn't know that chicken's shed) and the clucking is driving me nuts!

The last straw came this morning when I left for the grocery store and DH said as I was leaving, "Be careful when you back out so you don't run over our chickens."

These are not our chickens! Has anyone else been plagued by stray chickens??

This morning I called our animal control officer. "Sorry, mam, we don't do chickens. Just dogs." That was the response I got. They did send a police officer to investigate, but since I didn't want the chickens arrested, there was really nothing he could do.

So, now I don't know what to do. Throw rocks at them? Eat them? Have a party and raffle them off as door prizes? Or just give up and name them?

Thoughts?

OH BOY, my kids would love to have some chickens. Unfortunately the city would have something to say about it.

I don't know but this story made me laugh out loud.

I hope you get the chickens taken care of soon...

Have you tried the Humane Society? Are there any farms nearby that they might have come from?

Yikes!!! I don't know what to tell you, but I have to say that is quite funny.

Although probably not to you right now :)

If you have any farmers in the area? Or in the vaccinity? I am SURE they wouldn't mind getting some FREE livestock. :)

Maybe they are left over escapees from the "Chicken Run" :teeth:

In my line of business, I am one who has to go to a customer's house when they owe us money, I am a "BILL COLLECTOR" anyways, I went to this one house and they have a ROOSTER in their front yard and it came AFTER me!!!

You can always get a sign that says "Protected by attack Chicken"! :p

our neighbor's chickens from across the way come over to eat the birdseed we put out for wild birds

we just chase 'em or squirt 'em with squirt guns :p

Perhaps they evacuated from Key West or even Oviedo, FL and got lost.

I think you should just name them and get to know them a little better. Perhaps you will grow to love them and they will become a part of your little family! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Maybe, but they don't have collars on, so I can't call their owners.

If they were donuts they wouldn't stand a chance..... :p

I'm sorry but this is the funniest thing I've read in a while!

Don't kill the poor babies!! Maybe you could call a few farmers and ask them if they would like FREE chickens!

What would he have done if you HAD wanted the chickens arrested?? I am having a visual of him trying to Mirandize four squawking chickens.

I keep thinking that these chickens probably haven't travelled that far from home. Do you have anyone that lives nearby with some land that might be keeping chickens? I'd investigate the neighborhood and see if you can find where they came from. Or I would ask a farmer to come and get them.

Since chickens can't exactly "fly" chances are they started out for a stroll one day and did INDEED cross the road!

May I suggest calling the editor of your local newspaper. This is just the kind of "human interest story" that they would just " gobble up" (oops wrong bird). Anywhay I am sure that if you had them out and descibed your curious predicament they would publish a cute little story complete with photo and the chickens would quickly be reunited with their rightful owners.

If that doesn't work I have a fantastic recipe for "beer up the butt chicken".

as the owner of 9, uh-make that 8- one just committed suicide in the dog pen, chickens, I can tell you they don't travel to far from home. They usually return to the roost every night. These might have been bought recently and escaped from the new owner. They probably belong to someone within about a 1/2 mile from your home. Maybe an ad in the local paper?

LOL When I was little my grandparents had the meanest chicken in town. He would chase us (the kids) around the yard, he would peck our dogs new puppies and was just generally after everyone. They had had many chickens and we had never seen one that acted like that
