Hi ...

Saw the chicken pox mentioned in a thread by muntzfab4 but thought I would post this to everyone ....

It was my son who came down with the chicken pox while on the cruise. Though he did spend some time in the kids club (maybe 5 hours) between Saturday, Sunday and Monday, it was on Tuesday when the spots really popped out. He has a few spots on his face on Monday, but he is really faired skin and always seems to have some sort of skin irritation. I initially though it was from mosquitos, then realized there are not mosquitos at sea. No other symptoms of illness prior to Tuesday afternoon when a fever started.

We decided to go to the ships Dr. so others would know. It can be dangerous for adults and women late in pregnancy (though there should not be any of those on the cruise). Though most people from the US are not a risk, we kept thinking about the hard working staff from all over the world. (gave him some antivirial med which he said may help, but usually does not ... acyclovir?)

It is most contagious prior to the spots showing up, it is no longer contagious once all the spots crust over. He would have been exposed 2-3 weeks prior to the spots.

He (5) was in isolation (aka not allowed to leave) in the cabin from Tuesday afternoon until we left the ship at 9 on Saturday. Our dining room server brought us our meals at about 7:30 each night, literally running between sittings (he also called just before 6 to take our order). We have a 15 year old, so he stayed with DS5 one night so we could keep our Palo ressie.

I knew they'd isolate him prior to going to the Dr., but I was afraid they'd isolate all of us. We decided if this was the case we would get off the ship in St. Thomas and spend thousand of dollars to fly home when DS was not contagious!

Our cabin steward was wonderful! His "boss" asked him if he had chicken pox and he answered "Yes", had he said no, they would have put him in isolation for 2 weeks. Isolation for a CM is a tiny cabin.

I think I cried for 2 days, DS did great though. I was disappointed for everything he's miss, though he didn't even know he'd be missing it. A few times he asked if there were kids at the club having fun. He wanted to know when was the Goofy Pajama Party and I told him they cancelled it! I was SOOOOO thankful we were facing the dock and not the beach on Castaway, that would have been awful for him. The best thing about that day was packing!

(I did do the jetski tour with DS15 on CC, very nice!, also went up the tram in St. Thomas with him).

After disembarking (BTW, we had no special procedure for that, which we thought a bit strange) we rented a car drove to vero, went to the ER and received a note saying he as no longer contagious. Had a few great days there! We arrived home last night.

I would say guest services was OK. They came to our cabin right away, gave us a vcr, and some coloring pages and crayons. She said she'd bring some boardgames, which didn't happen and we had to call every day to get out dinner menus. We also had to call a few times to receive a list of movies. Someone did call to see about our plans for getting home and contacted the airline for us, which was nice ... we hadn't considered that problem! Not sure what else they really could have done ---- maybe a get well card signed by Mickey??

Will go back to Royal Caribbean for our next cruise, DS15 said he prefers RCCL and it will be a little while before we're back into our "big disney fan" mentality.

One more strange thing .... I called the ship's dr's office and said "I think my son has chicken pox, do you want to send someone to our cabin" ... they said "no, bring him down, we're here from 4:30 - ?" .... I called again on Thursday to have him checked, again when I asked if they would send someone to the cabin, they said "no, bring him down"???? I asked the Dr, if we could take him to deck 10 late a night for a ice cream on Friday night, he said no. That left us a bit puzzled.

Thanks for listening!

Sorry for your experience, but it sounds like you and DCL made the best of the situation.

My DD came down with chicken pox on another cruise line, and we weren't treated nearly so well. It was exactly one month before the vaccine was released for use in normal, healthy children. It was funny that once it was released, we didn't need it. Ah well, the things we remember not so fondly. There was no room service on our cruise line, and they wouldn't make an exception for my sick child. So...I'd wait each evening till she fell asleep, then go to the dining room and order my food "to go." Such fun. It was great when my server finally understood the situation and brought the food to the cabin instead of making me wait for it. I'd order, then come back in 15 minutes to pick it up...not fun. That experience makes DCL seem like paradise.

I was on your cruise, but my kids were in the lab. I heard about it and felt so bad for whoever it was!! I knew they would be quarantined to their room. Poor baby. Of course by the time I heard about it, the rumor was that 30 kids had it and were quarantined!!! Of course I took that for what it was. Its always something though, isnt it?? Hopefully your next vacation will be much smoother!!!

I'm sorry your son came down with the chicken pox on the cruise but I think you did the right thing by telling the ship's doctor about it. I have never had the chicken pox and although I had the vaccination a few years ago, I still get very nervous when hearing I may have possibly been exposed to the virus. My brother, sister, and I haven't had the chicken pox as kids although being exposed many times. My sister finally got the chicken pox when I was visiting her 7 months pregnant with my DS. Luckily I didn't get it then and I was able to get the vaccination (2 doses of the vaccination for adults) after having my son.

I'm glad to hear DCL is somewhat accomodating to those in "quarantine". I hope you son's feeling better.

I'm sorry your son missed out on so much. My kids had the vaccination as babies, but there is always a chance of them still getting it. I would hate to have them miss out on so much. You sound like you held it together pretty well and hopefully your next cruise will be everything you dream about:D

Your poor little boy! Your poor family! I feel for you. My son has always had impeccable timing when it comes to getting sick. He came down with chicken pox right before we were to leave town for a long July 4th weekend in the mountains. Nothing so exciting as a cruise vacation, but it sure put a damper on things (we stayed home and gave him Aveeno baths). This same kid came down with strep throat the day I was to start my new job. I had to call in sick my first day! My co-workers still laugh about it (5 years later). We leave for our cruise on Friday so, I'm keeping a close eye on that kid of mine! If there is so much as one sniffle....

Again, I am so sorry about what happened to you and your family. Good for you for telling the ship's doctor right away. You did the right thing.

Sorry to hear about your experience! I would have cried for two days as well. I'm glad your son is OK and that the whole family wasn't quarentined.

KaitlinsMom, I was wondering the same thing about insurance. I'm curious if OP had insurance & if illness was covered. I would hope they would at least be able to get a partial refund for DS as he really wasn't able to enjoy much of the Cruise, plus someone obviously had to be with him the whole time as he was too young to stay by himself. BTW, I am sorry about the situation, I didn't get chicken pox until I was an adult & know how uncomfortable they are. Glad to hear he is better now! Kathy :wave2:

My son contracted chicken pox when he was 2...daycare kid so it wasn't a big surprise. The bad part was that he gave them to me a few weeks before my final exams. Chicken pox are so much worse in adults!

Well that was 10 years ago and I still have the after affects...I broke out with a case of shingles (the same virus...just chicen pox that lie dormant in the body until reexposed or too much stress) on July 5. :sad2: It took about 2 weeks for the rash to disappear even with oral antibiotics. My doctor told me as adults (especially those 50 and above) we run the risk of PHP...simply means extended tingling of the nerves which can continue for months. Mine just stopped tingling about a week ago. Since I hadn't been exposed to anyone with shingles, doc said it was the stress. :crazy2:

So, I feel for your son! Any kind of contagious illness is not fun! I can only imagine how he felt being confined to the room while onboard...poor guy!:grouphug:

I was wondering if the family that had the child with chicken pox was a DIS member and now I see you are. My DD's were both vaccinated against the chicken pox but I know there is a slight chance they can still get a mild case. So sorry that this happened to your family. We were talking with another family and were saying imagine paying all that money and then having this happen. I mentioned in my post that my kids did not enjoy the clubs, so after a few hours on Sunday, they didn't go anymore. DD 6 wanted to go the the Goofy PJ party, so I brought her. However, due to her separation issues, I had to stay, and if it is any consolation your son really didn't miss anything. We were there between 8 and 9 and Goofy had not shown up. The counsellors were having a fashion show in their pajamas and my DD was not interested. Hopefully, you will get to go again and truly enjoy DCL.

JustCruising, I am so sorry to hear about your son coming down with chicken pox while on the cruise. I hope he is feeling better.

Hope that you had travel insurance too and that it covers some of the trip for you.

I am very surprised they ships doctor had you go down to their clinic. Chicken pox is so contatgious that he could have infected others along the way...it is airborne. My kids all had the virus when they were younger and this was before the vaccine was avail. When my youngest (now 12)had an infected sore we had to bring him to the doctor.....they had us bring him in the back way, wear a mask and face the wall! Felt bad for him but that is how contagious is can be I guess. Luckily when my boys got the virus, it was at least a month before our vacation so it worked out...their timing was good for a change!! Hope all is well now.

Justcrusin,
SO sorry to hear about your experience -- I have to admitt that's a big fear of mine! I got the chicken pox when I was 28 -- two months after I got married!! It was HORRIBLE, but the timing was good -- can you imagine if it had been two months earlier?? I have no idea where I was exposed -- could've been anywhere I guess! Needless to say, my DD's have both had the immunization, but I know they can still get it -- but hopefully it would be a milder case than the one I had!
You're a good Mom and you did the right thing! I'm a firm beliver in "what comes around, goes around", so you're do for something good to happen. Sending pixie dust your way....... :wave2:

Fellow posters you are smart to be wary of the affectiveness of the Vaccine, also be wary of a doctor telling you, "you have the immunity and don't need the shot"!!
As a child neither my brother nor I had the chicken pox, even though we were exposed many times.
During a well check when my first DD was about 18 mo old and getting the shot I asked "should I get it since I have never had chicken pox" she said "lets do a blood test first to see if you have the antibodie". That test came back positive she told me I was immune and didn't need the shot.
Well I GOT the chicken pox several years later when I was 24 years old, and I can tell you I have NEVER been sooo sick in my life, my skin was literally CRAWLING.
Luckely my oldest DD (having recieved the shot) never got it, but my youngest DD was not so lucky about 2 wks later she came down with a horrible case.

Hope you can have another vacation soon to lesson the bad memories

sorry to hear about your son's ordeal. i would have cried myself. anyway speaking of chicken pox, when we were signing in for our july 10th cruise the cm said she had to inform us that one of the crew had come down with chicken pox recently and she had to make us aware of it. we never had this happen before and didn't really give it another thought since we all had chicken pox before but i did think that DCL was being very responsible by informing everyone of the situation.

So sorry to hear about your poor son. Sounds like he was a trooper though.

I can say this is absolutely true. All three of my kids had the vaccine and came down with the chicken pox last fall. In fact about 75-100 kids in their school did also and 90% of them had had the vaccine.

Thanks everyone for you kind words. DS is feeling fine. I didn't purchase travel insurance, I never do ... but I will certainly read more about it for out next trip.

FWIW, DS did not have the vaccine. I was hoping he would get the chicken pox naturally. I believe his immune system is stronger for the experience.

Bought Mickey ornaments on the ship for the boys for Christmas ... I want to put red spots on his face with a sharpie marker so someday we'll look on this and laugh.

I got a chuckle from the rumor spamama heard ... 30 kids with it! Fastest spreading chicken pox ever!

Thanks Everyone!
Diana

Funny story about the pox...my DSIL and her kids joined us for a trip to Myrtle Beach, SC when the kids were little. Her son was around 3 or 4 at the time and developed chicken pox on the trip. Now DSIL was a little worried about how she was going to drive the 12 hours to get home with an itchy little boy strapped in a carseat. So she gave him benedryl thinking it would help him to not itch so much and make him sleepy. Did you know that on some kids the total opposite can happen? He talked non stop all the home. She finally couldn't take it any longer and said to him 'Billy, please, stop talking for 5 minutes!" To which he replied "I can't help it....my teeth won't stop!" :hyper:

Sorry about your trip. Here's hoping your next one is much better!
