Comparing DL to WDW is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. They are both fruit, but much much different. It's hardly fair to poor little "landstrapped" DL to be compared to the wide open WDWorld! You just have to take DL for what it is. A truly magical little park, where Walt walked, where it all started, and for that, I'm grateful. I loved DL, but it had it's weak points. The fact that it's sort of pinned into a major metropolitan area does not contribute to the feeling of "being away from it all". It's more like going to Great America for a couple days.... until you get into the park that is. Once inside of DL, the outside real world slips away, but the minute you leave, you are sort of back in Anaheim. When you leave the Magic Kingdom in Florida, you are still "in the magic" so to speak at your super cool hotel and still surrounded by wonderful cast members. If you leave DL and go out onto Harbor, you're back in the real world with real people.
The other thing about DL is that it's a locals park. So, many of the people who are there, are only there for the day, or maybe two at the most. So, there's no major investment there. This leads to people being a little less "invested" in having the "magical" experience. They are there for the day, that's all. If you pay $2000+ to go to WDW, you are invested in having a wonderful time and making it a wonderful time for everyone around you. If things go bad at DL, many people have spent $200 and can go home. The castmembers in DL are great, but maybe a pinch less great than at WDW.
DL does have a lot of really cool original rides that were designed and implemented by Walt himself that are not at the MK at WDW. POTC rocks at DL! And they still have Mr. Toad and Alice.
California Adventure is a nice little park, but needs "something" . I did love however the fact that they played the Beach Boys and all the other "California" beach bands from that time period (Mamas & Papas, The Birds, etc.). Great music, fun atmosphere, but it needs some more "magic". Hey where else can you ride Soarin two times in a row in a matter of about 20 minutes! Yep, California Adventure!
So, go love DL, but don't go and compare it to WDW.
