We were just there on 7/28 and the food was fine. We had a 7:20p ADR, waited about 15min to get seated and were out of there by 9pm. With a 6:30p ADR, I would not count on being done by 7:30p due to few things beyond your control such as how long you may have to wait, where you are seated and how fast the characters are making their rounds. The last two you have absolutely no control but you can get there 15-20 min early to checkin and maybe you will get seated early or ontime. It just really depends on how busy the restaurant is for your size party that night.
We always make this our first night dinner as we do not usually arrive early enough in the day to do the parks and it gets us in the WDW mood. Plus we get to see, take pictures and get autographs from 5 or 6 characters right off the bat and do not spend time later waiting in line. At least not at this point, when my sisters twins (boy/girl, they are 7 now) were small, they wanted the characters everytime they saw them unless they were villians.
As for the food, while it has never been great, it has never been bad either. We have always found something that we liked, especially the desserts and have left there full. My mom picked Chef Mickeys to celebrate her and my father's 50th anniversary last year on our trip.
My advice is to try it and form your own opinion because everyone's tastes differ and WDW restaurants like any other sometimes has a bad night it doesn't mean that it is always below standard.
