I am going to try and write a condensed version of our Jan 9-15th stay at the Beach Club. I'll try to focus on more high and low lights, less "and then we got off haunted mansion and went to Pirates of the Carribean." So keep your hands, arms, feet and legs inside the vehicle, and here we go...

The cast: Me, 40 something mom, Disney veteran and commando. DH, 40 something dad who loves all thrill rides, always screams like a girl and puts his hands up, DS 16, mostly came for the fine dining (we now refer to him as Count Drakula as he went back to the room every afternoon for a nap and always kept the shades drawn) DS 12 who loves all thrill rides and is just not exhaustable in the World, not matter how we try.

the place: Beach Club. We have stayed here once before, plus AKL 3 times and GF once. It's a toss up among these three as to which is our favorite. They all have the plusses and minuses. We booked a standard room, I requested non smoking, room facing epcot and the woods near the quiet pool, with a full balcony. Got everything except balcony, we had even better.... ground floor. Room was in good shape, pretty clean. I highly recommend by the quiet pool. It is so nice to escape all the throngs after a day in the park. There was never more than 5 people around the pool there. Quite a difference from Stormalong Bay.

Tuesday, Jan 9th. After a "I'm too excited to sleep" night, uneventful flight and Tiffany Towncar service (always use them, they are always good), we check in early (noon) room is ready. Our park tickets have not been put on our room key, front desk tells us to go to concierge to do this. We drop our bags in the room, and go back to concierge desk. They check our cards, "Um, yes, the tickets are on here". So contrary to smart planning, we go to MK. It's seems crowded to us, but everyone assures us the crowds are very small. Do our favorites then lunch at Pecos. Can't charge to the room as we have exceeded our limit. Neat trick since we had just arrived.

Dinner is at the wonderful Le Cellier. Food, excellent, service, excellent, everything excellent. And, guess what, we could charge it to our room... don't know why... it just worked now.

Wed. Jan 10th. Epcot all day. Highlights: Soaring is excellent, and it truly is a different experience in the front row. Test track still a family favorite, Mission Space was mostly a walk on as we chose the more intense side. The other side was far more crowded. We also love poking around World showcase. We love grabbing lunch at France's counter service. The croisant sandwiches and pastries are really delicious. DH says " I just want to go into every country and see every part of it" DS 12 asks why, and DH replies "Well, because I have never really done that." DS says "Well, I have never stuck a fork in my eye, but it doesn't mean I want to do it."

Dinner at California Grill. Food was excellent, wine was laughably overpriced, service was okay. Came back to room message from front desk that we are over our limit on our card (still? again?) Call down and find out that the park tickets were not charged to our credit card, and were clogging up our credit limit. Um, okay, go ahead and charge them. Problem solved... ?

Thurs. Jan 11th. Animal Kingdom day. Arrive for preshow, which my kids hate, and then off to Everest. This is a great, great ride for those who love roller coasters. The first time was extremely scary, the next time much better. After the first ride, I told my boys I was having a heart attack, but since I was clutching my right side, they didn't really believe me. Safari fun as usual, I still think they need to lose the "Little Red" story and realize that the animals are entertainment enough.

Most exciting moment of the day... yes, it's true, I won a dream from the year of a million dreams. Get ready... drum roll.... I was the diner of the hour at flame tree barbecue. No, my meal was not comped or anything, but I did win a big, giant cupcake. Which was really nice, but, as I am now in that wonderful peri menopausal stage and am starting to speak up, I said thanks and then asked that they get me my correct order, please. I am really proud of myself because a few years ago I would have just eaten what I didn't want and not made a fuss.

A slighly chilly pool afternoon, then dinner at ESPN (huge servings of okay food, okay service). Epcot fireworks next to a gaggle of cheerleaders (go Tigers!) They then did a rather unprecipitated group hug, to which my DS 12 said "I sure would like to be in the middle of that circle of love!"

Slight mid week rants: And we are starting to notice the large groups of Brazilian teens, lead by a person waving a flag, clogging up the parks. There has been none of the rude behavior or line cutting I have read about from them, though. It just makes the parks seem more crowded.

And what is the deal with spitting? How can anyone think this is proper behavior? And does anyone ever enforce the smoking in designated areas only? Yuck!

See part one for pertinent details, ASL, etc. You have joined us mid trip. Today is our third day...

Friday, January 12th, MK day. This day we named " So Disney wouldn't let anything bad happen to us, right?" It's a glorious, sunny day. We do all of our favorites, watch all the happenings, and then do our family favorite, The people mover or whatever they call it now. So ds 12 and I are sitting in a tram, it keeps starting and stopping. It then slowly moves towards a tram in front of us, which is not moving. "We are going to hit" says he. "Nah, Disney wouldn't let that happen" says I. "We are going to hit!" We do have time to get into our crash positions (you know, like from the movie Airplane) and then right ourselves before the slight bump. We did worry that someone in our tram would claim mental distress and severe back injuries due to the trauma.

Rant of the day: We say some child abuse early a.m. on the bus. A mom (she looked about 19) was feeding her BABY (under a year) a bottle of coke, Well not just coke, but Diet Coke. The baby chugged it, at least half of a 16 ounce bottle. He "took it to the face" in DS 12 language. Jeez!!!!! We saw him later in the week, too, and yes, still clutching a diet coke.

Wonderful dinner at Flying Fish, great food, outstanding service. then DH and I go to our favorite, the Adventurer's Club. Koongalush, everyone!

Sat. January 13th, mutiny afoot. DH and DS 16 refuse to get up at the crack of dawn, so sad, too bad, so we left them. DS12 and I off to Animal Kingdom for some more Everest. We also do Dinosaur and Primeval Hurl (which it really is after a night at Adventurer's club, and if you do it twice in a row!) A safari, some Devine time, and off to meet up at Epcot for lunch with the mutineers. Back to the quiet pool then dinner at Citricos. This is our first time there, and it is outstanding. A hidden gem. The food was even with Ca Grill, or maybe even better. Nice, elegant but not stuffy atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

After dinner back to Beaches and cream. No organization, 45 minute wait for Edy's ice cream? Definitely not worth it. Finally I went up to DH standing in the long, second line and asked "did they catch the cow yet?"

Upcoming... Part 3, final daze and the hot tub incident....

Sounds like a great start to your vacation! I was talking to my DH about doing the same thing as your DH wanted to do in World Showcase in EPCOT when we vacation in December, been there 5 times and still have not done that yet!

And I'm right there with you on the spitting and smoking!:sad2:

Looking forward to more!

Seriously, they serve Edy's ice cream at Beaches and Cream. I really thought they made their own ice cream there, how disappointing.

See parts one and two for background stuff. I wish I were not so computer illiterate and I would link them for you. Now back to our story...

Sun. January 14th, MGM day. So sad Rockin Roller Coaster is being refurbished. We did enjoy Tower multiple times, though. We also saw Light, Motor, Noise for the first time. Thumbs up from DH and DS12, nice sitting time for me and DS 16. Enjoyed Indiana Jones, but really enjoyed the street performers playing the dating game. Very funny! did the rest of the usuals, then back to Hurricane Hannahs by the pool for lunch. Stormalong packed, so we head back to the quiet pool. Clean up for diner, walk the world, take in yet another performance of Off Kilter (I love them!) DS16 catches up with us and says " I knew you would be here" Yep. dinner at Rose and Crown. Very fun, food is ... okay to good, service fantastic, then watch the fireworks in the VIP area of the restaurant. Good views, but sadly, no cheerleaders for DS 12.

Rants of the day: Don't judge me before you read it all the way through: The first and worst: There were a group of men, in their thirties, acting very effeminate, loud and rude at Stormalong. Then a boy, about 15, comes into the pool and they say "Hey, George, looks like just your type." I grabbed DS12 and left the pool. He says "why, is it because they are gay?" I told him no, it's because adults do not and should not talk about kids in a sexual way. It they had said that about my son, I would have gone mother bear on them, and still feel like I should have said something to them. Very sensitive to this as we live in Kirkwood, MO where they just found those two kidnapped boys. I bike by that apartment complex all the time, and my sons always eat at the pizza place where the pervert worked. Second rant, saw a woman steal three lollypops from the Marketplace at Beach club, just slip them into her Mickey bag and walk out. I was shocked. No wonder things cost so much at Disney, they have to cover all the shrinkage. Third rant, going back to our room we saw a couple, late 50's making out in the hot tub... very intensely, would classify as extended foreplay. Bad enough, but there were other people in the hot tub... EWWWWWWWW.

Last morning spent at Epcot doing our favorites and having fun family time. It was a fantastic trip, we really got to spend a lot of time together, laugh and just enjoy each other. 12 and 16 are great ages to enjoy the parks. No temper tantrums, melt downs or anything. My 12 even slipped his hand into mine a few times while walking the parks, and 16 let me put my arm around him in public! We have lots of family memories, especially making fun of my germaphobic self. My sons would pretend to lick the bus poles and windows... guess you had to be there, but it makes me laugh. We also decided that Disney is a true Darwinian test. The fittest get fast passes and never wait in line, the farther down the chain wait in line, spit, and give fast pass people dirty looks. It's all good because the fast pass system would not work if everyone used it.

Questions? Comments? I'm off to do mounds of laundry and clean out my fridge because we lost power for two days while we were gone.

ESPN does not take ADR's. It is located on the Boardwalk, and is usually very crowded, so you should go early or late, and avoid any day with a big sporting event on TV. It's not really one of my favorite places, but my sons like it.

I think you may have overreacted at Stormalong Bay - I mean really according to your day one:

"...Epcot fireworks next to a gaggle of cheerleaders (go Tigers!) They then did a rather unprecipitated group hug, to which my DS 12 said "I sure would like to be in the middle of that circle of love!"

How is what your son said any different - if I would have heard that as a cheerleader, that would have made me very uncomfortable.

I totally agree with your "Rants of the day"! It is very inappropriate for "men of age" to make a comment about a child "underage". Stealing is just uncalled for! And people, if you want to make out, GO TO YOUR ROOM!

And I too am a germophobe, and proud of it!

Great report, thanks!

chicago disney fan,

My son is 12, the girls were like 15, they are all children. He is not an adult talking about a child in a sexual way. He is a normal boy admiring slightly older attractive girls. Geez! and have a happy Disney Day!

Wondering if it's a different scenario when heterosexual construction workers hoot at a young woman going by? (or to make a more relevant comparison, make a comment about her that she doesn't hear? As it sounded as if the young man in your story didn't hear the remark, though you did.)

Heterosexual guys notice girls and women and comment on them all the time. (As your son did.) I don't really see a difference.

Okay, this is ridiculous. This is a trip report, not a personal critique on my feelings towards ADULTS saying sexual things about CHILDREN. For example, let's say your daughter is 15. You are at a pool and a 12 year old says she is hot. Then a 37 year old man says she is hot. You would feel the same? And no, it is not a orientation thing, believe me if you knew my background you would laugh at the assumption. Now, back to the trip report. Any legitimate questions or comments about Disney?

Thanks for reporting- We will have to give Citricos a try on our next go.
I cant believe that it was "crowded" ugh-
It wasnt until our 3rd trip that we really used fast pass! Amazing is all I can say- Your descriptions were right on!
Thanks

I think you may have overreacted at Stormalong Bay - I mean really according to your day one:

WAY different...

Look at it this way....KIDS are SUPPOSED to be attracted to other kids their age (in the teen age group). That is normal and natural. Not that any boy should be making lude comments to any girl (or vice versa) but if her son would have gone up to that group of teen girls and asked one of them on a date and she accepted it would not have been illegal. If a 30 something year old had gone up to a teen and asked them out on a date it would have been crossing a legal and in my mind, a moral line.

It is NEVER okay for a grown man or woman to make those sorts of comments about someone who is underage. Ever. Period. It doesn't matter if it is gay men looking at a 15 year old boy or a group of straight women looking at that same boy. KIDS (this includes teens) are OFF LIMITS to adults. I don't know how one can possibly compare one thing to the other.

IT IS NEVER OKAY FOR ADULTS TO EYE UP CHILDREN AND MAKE THOSE SORTS OF COMMENTS ABOUT THEM!

OP, I totally understood your point. And I also think it is natural for boys and GIRLS to take note of other boys and or girls. I would think that if those men had made a comment about another MAN this would not have even been mentioned in her report.

For me also, this has NOTHING to do with a comment just being made...I bet if the OP would have heard two teens saying that to each other it would have been another thing quickly forgotten that never would have made it to her report. It has nothing to do with her being anti gay or anti anything. It has to do with her being anti child predator. And that is what I consider any adult who is getting their jollies by looking at bathing suit clad kids in a pool area! SICK AND WRONG!

Bottom line a man or a woman commenting on any minor (half their age) in a sexual manner is wrong. Not just to me, but to society in general...thus why we have legal protection of minors from adults. I don't mean to assume someone just making a comment was going to do something to act on that comment...however, the comment was totally out of line in and of itself. ADULTS SHOULD NOT BE SCOPING OUT CHILDREN AT A POOL. Ish.

Sorry to high jack your thread OP.

It sounds like you had a great vacation! :thumbsup2
