Cheerfully child-free. Anyone else?

(they're ultra-religious and believe in the idea that God should be responsbile for determining how many children they have, so they don't use birth control.)

How is IVF letting God determine how many kids you have? Isn't that as "un-natural" as birth control? Just curious how they justify that.

The couple I'm referring to (the ones with the 16 kids) didn't use IVF. All of theirs were made the old fashioned way...

The other couple luvwinnie mentioned (the ones with the sextuplets) were the ones who used IVF.

I'll guess that God gave the MD the skill to perform the IVF, God gave the scientist the intellect to discover the process..etc. I kind of follow that philosophy myself-that's how I reconcile my faith with advances in science and technology. I believe (and this is just me-I'm not evangelizing here) that all good gifts come from God and that includes medical and scientific breakthroughs.

The one about the "new baby smell" makes me laugh. I've smelled baby, it is NOT a pleasent smell.
In fact there's a commercial now about smelling like a mom vs. smelling like a woman. I think its for a shampoo. The idea is that you can get rid of the "mom smell" with the shampoo and smell nice for your husband, LOL!

Oddly enough, they don't bother me much. While I wouldn't want everyone in the world to have 16 kids, they're definitely in the minority, so I don't worry too much about excess population in cases like this.

Mostly I just file it under "Not for me, but as long as you're supporting your own family--whatever floats your boat!"

Very true and the 16 kids seem VERY well behaved...BUT in an interview the woman who took the fertility drugs or had IVF said society should help support her kids because society allows the procedures!!!! WHAT????? Apparently she is always trying to get handouts. NOW THAT BUGS ME!

GRRRR-that infuriates me!!!! How dare you assume that we will all just LOVE to support your choice to reproduce! You want 'em, you pay for 'em-just like pets!

Society "Allows" a lot of things. Society "allows" people to take trips to WDW. Does that mean everyone should chip in and send me all expenses paid whenever I want to go because it is my "life-choice?" Hmmm...maybe so!

Yep! And society can chip in to pay for Winnie's vet bills too!

I think we should be able to claim our pets on out tax forms, actually.

We are doing the environment and society a favor by keeping an animal off the streets and giving it shots, etc. We are preventing the spread of rabies and other diseases by taking animals in.

It's not fair that people get to claim kids, but we don't get to claim pets.

Our first dog Samantha had cancer. We did not have insurance. It cost a pretty penny. After she was gone we got our golden Duncan. We no sooner got him and I was on the phone getting pet insurance. It is not very costly. We pay about 30 dollars a month. It has come in handy a couple times. For things that cost 6 or 7 hundred dollars we got about half back. We mostly got it for peace of mind. At this point he is 9 so I am sure I will be using it some more.

Well that is just not right. It's bad enough we have to worry about our own health insurance. We shouldn't have to worry about our pets.

I would like to mention that there are child free couples (although we were not child free by choice) that are not pet people.

This is the stuff I don't get -you don't want children to tie you down but you have dogs to get home too and cannot just "pick up and go".

We have cats too. They can easily go a couple of days with some extra food. Longer than that it's pretty easy to get a neighbor to come in a pour kibble for a week. They're fairly low-maintenance.

We enjoyed one of the better child-free perks this weekend--the last minute trip. We were kind of bored Saturday, so we booked a last-minute room and headed into Chicago for the night on Sunday. We took a river architecture cruise (Amazing! Very good docent.), toured Navy Pier, caught a Second City show, and had a great dinner. It was such a nice time!
