We were at a resort this weekend which was overrun with Cheerleadres for a big "meet"
(so I really feel for anyone who is at WDW during such an event;) )

Anyway, after dinner DH and I were walking around the deserted Ballroom area (there are long elegant halls with artwork and gorgeous flowers to admire) and one group was practicing for the next days's event-which occured in the large conference center next door.

They were practicing in the Entrance foyer of theBallroom area which had a tall ceiling-but not that tall.

Only one adult was present-she was sitting on ground eating fast food and just sort of watching them-there were nO "spotters" or anyone behind to help catch the girl thrown. The girls all looked young teens-like 13-14- but each group of 6 had one really small girl that was thrown up in the air.

The thing that SHOCKED DH and I is =
each girl that was thrown up-
almost HIT THE CEILING!!!!!:sad2:

I'm not a cheer parent and never was, but I wouldn't want my child doing that. Broken necks come to mind.

(from the floor, not the ceiling)

I coached cheer for many years, and never would I let them do that. Very dangerous.

Dangerous is an understatement!!!

My DD was a "flyer". There was always spotters AND at least one adult watching over the the stunts.

A cheerleader died last year from a throw. Sad.:guilty:

If I remember right, a "basket toss" is required to be done with a mat on the ground. It might also require one or two spotters.
The basket toss is one of the easier stunts to learn and to execute and is amazing to watch. It's also one of the most dangerous.

What comes to mind is the scene from "Bring it on" where it is the night before a competition and a team is practicing and the one cheerleader yells out, "If you don't have it yet, you're not going to have it". These girls should be RESTING, not using this ballroom (which I'm sure they didn't have permission to use) to do dangerous stunts.

We would have gotten in SO much trouble if we had ever done something like that!

I thought as much.

This group really seemed to be a Rag-tag group-we saw much more polished girls with lots of coaches in the lobby, elevators (er-everywhere;) )....and this group seemed very un-professional.
