We are flying down to WDW on southwest and back home on Airtran, so free luggage on the trip down and not on the way home. I want to bring some grocery items with us (cereal, granola bars, etc). Can I check a box with those items on Southwest? I don't want to bring an extra suitcase cause then I'll have to pay to bring it home on Airtran, plus I feel like a box might offer more protection vs a suitcase. Does anyone know if I can do this?

Sure, not a problem, as long as it doesn't exceed size and weight requirements

I checked a 45# box from MCO to BOS in Sept.on Jet Blue.

As long as it is sealed properly and has a name and address on it, it will be fine. I did find the TSA opened my box and then resealed it poorly but it still got to BOS in one piece.
