How big of a can is allowed?

DH really wants to take lysol  but it's such a large can that I'm thinking it's not allowed.

Last year he took a small sample sized can of Clorox that I'd had for quite awhile. Wonder why lysol doesn't make smaller cans...

Aerosol cans are allowed in checked bags. There are no restrictions on size, other than the overall size restrictions on your bags. Lysol can may be big, but I bet they fit in a standard suitcase :)

Actually, "Aerosol (any except for personal care or toiletries in limited quantities)" is prohibited from both checked and carryon luggage. Not sure if you can make the case that the Lysol is for persoanl care. -- Suzanne

Whoops - that's for the correction. Funny, I even checked a TSA list before posting. What I didn't realize is that the *FAA* has a rule against some aerosols. BTW - the "limited quantities" rule is no more than 70oz total, no more than 16oz in any one container. Not sure what the heck constitutes "personal care."

Size doesn't matter when it is Lysol; it isn't allowed anyway. Same deal on the bleach, actually.

As for personal-care aerosols, there is a size limit:
Personal Care Items containing hazardous materials (e.g., flammable
perfume, aerosols) totaling no more than 70 ounces may be carried on board.
Contents of each container may not exceed 16 fluid ounces.

(The above is from a document that pre-dates the 8/10 rules, but this is an FAA rule, not a TSA rule, so the issue is these items getting onto the plane at all, regardless of whether they are in checked or carryon baggage. Some of the things that this doc says are allowed in carryons now have to go in checked baggage, but if the doc says it isn't allowed at all, it still isn't. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org...media/updated illustrated chart June 2005.pdf)

PS: I've asked, and "personal care" means meant to be applied to the human body. If you are not supposed to deliberately put it on your skin or hair, then it's out. Laundry starch is the one that causes arguments on that ground, since you put it on clothing that you *then* put on your body. The FAA doesn't buy that argument.

A really great non-aerosol spray for "odor removal" is Citrus Magic. It doesn't disinfectant like Lysol but sure as heck smells better. You can find it at Target and the 3 oz size is a lot less bulky than Lysol. (It states on the can that it is non-aerosol althought it is flammable).

Also Febreeze comes in small sizes as well.

Thanks everyone.

We were able to take the Clorox spray last year, but maybe they mistook it for deodorant. It wasn't bleach, but a disinfectant like Lysol.

The Lysol is over 16 oz. anyway.

pbnjrockette, he wants a disinfectant - he doesn't like staying in hotels.

You could buy it when you get there, or if you don't have a rental car or aren't using a town car service that will stop at a grocery store you could use gardengrocer.com or wegoshop.com to have things delivered to your hotel room.

I've always packed a can of Lysol in my carryon before these new restrictions with no problem what-so-ever. It is a 6 oz. size can that are really hard to find, I found them recently on drugstore.com. We leave tomorrow morning for WDW and I have it packed in my checked luggage already to go, to me it's a personal item and not like a can of spray paint? If they take it, they take it but so far I've not had a problem and no one has ever said I can't take it? :confused3

DJNOWICK - we're taking ME. I thought about the delivery, but since we're on the ddp there isn't anything else we need.

PSL- I saw the 6oz. listed on the Lysol site yesterday & called DH. Like you, I figured if they confiscate it - oh well. He couldn't find it anywhere. I'll check into drugstore.com - thanks!

I had always packed a small size of lysol disinfectant spray in my checked luggage but when it ran out had to buy a bigger size - last trip my luggage was opened and a TSA note that they had removed an item that isn't allowed (forget the exact term they used). Next trip I'll buy disinfectant during our grocery stop and leave it in the room when we check out. When I leave something like that (or like a styrofoam cooler) I leave a note for the housekeeper that she is welcome to it if she can use it. Don't know if they're allowed to but I thought that with a note it should be alright.

Was the one they took 6 oz. or the 18 oz.?

Found out that we can mail it if DH must have it. It has to go surface mail is all.

They confiscated the 19 oz. size - they considered it a hazardous material. Apparently personal deodorant is allowed (so far) and hairspray but other aerosol cans are not allowed. Maybe the smaller ones appear on x-ray to be an allowed aerosol.
