Check Your Flights!

On JetBlue, a lot of people probably choose Blue Basic, meaning they won’t be assigned a seat until right before the flight. So while any seat might be available to pay to choose, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are all empty. Does that make sense?

Our son and girfriend JetBlue flight time changed by more than 2 hours, tickets I had purchased for a XMAS gift beginning of Dec... I was able to get a full refund on the flight. JetBlue policy is any flight change time more than 2 hours qualifies you for a full refund, not a JetBlue credit. It worked out for us! ::yes::

SWA changed our flights to Charleston, SC in September from non-stops to layovers. UGH. There aren't any more n/s available. We have already changed the vacation from London to HHI, and with the uptick of cases in SC, I am not sure we are going to go at all. Luckily all flights are booked with points and hotel is DVC so we can cancel by August and have no charges. I just need British Airways to cancel our flight so I can get money back, not vouchers.

JetBlue just updated their cancellation/modification policy yesterday, so any time before your flight now you can cancel and get a full refund, though I was told it had to be a JetBlue credit as long as you use it or book a flight within 2 years. I'm still holding out hope on my 7/20 trip, and really hoping cases do not continue to rise (this week has been better than late last week, but still not too encouraging), and I am letting this go right up until 7/19.

But besides us, only the seats immediately across the aisle, the first two rows, the exit rows and the last row were being shown as unavailable.
First row - at least the DEF side - is blocked off for disabled passengers. Always.
last row, sometimes last two rows, are blocked in case of Unaccompanied Minors. Always.
Exit rows could be blocked because JetBlue wants to ensure that the passengers in those seats are able and willing to assist in an emergency. Or they could have been selected by existing passengers. I
Remaining blocked seats were most likely already selected by passengers. Note that seat 9F is available.

I bought our August trip’s JetBlue flights early this week. Just yesterday I received an email that they cancelled it. Turns out they started limiting flight days to Sunday’s, Tuesday’s, and Thursday’s only.

Our United flight was changed twice before we went a few days ago. I never accepted the changes (to indirect flights adding 5hrs each way) and ended up on direct flights leaving at seriously inconvenient times that took almost two days from our vacation.
The flights were fully booked, without spacing, and the airports were eerily EMPTY with few open vendors.
I was glad to see some other children, though.
Everyone was wearing masks. Some especially scared-looking passengers were also wearing goggles.

RE SWA Have lost count how many times our August flights have changed...basically, eliminating NS flights

Booked Sept/Oct trip last week, have had 3 changes already. Ugh

Here, I'll show you. Our return flight, X's are not available, squares and circles are. Our seats are indicated with orange checks. Of note: I was seeing this both directions when I posted my OP, now quite a few seats are x'ed on our outbound flight, so maybe something they are working on;

Middle seats on aircraft with 3 seats in a row are unavailable until September 30 for U.S. airlines (date may vary between airline, not sure). This is for social distancing, but those traveling together can sit together, however, and take up that middle seat.

Also many U.S. airlines have added a basic fare to compete with the like Spirit, Frontier, and even to some degree, SW. The basic fare does not assign seats until closer to departure, and they tell you will not be sitting together (though on empty flights, you really would)

I think United just opened up middle seats for the flights I checked. Also noticed some nonstops going to connectings and prices/miles are lower. Check your flights.

I have a trip out to DL on 9/30 (hopefully). My flight was PIT-MDW-LAX. I had about an hour at Midway. I saw these posts and checked Tuesday night and my layover changed to 4 1/2 hours! Didn’t land at LAX until 3:30pm, which kills the first day. I looked at the schedule and there was a flight through Denver, I called and they switched me, I now land at 11:20am, which is good. They changed my return to connecting through Dallas instead of Denver, about a 1/2 hour change. I did get an email around the same time I discovered it.

My SW flight from MCO to home changed. Leaving 20 minutes earlier, layover in Chicago instead of Phoenix, returning 20 minutes later (so longer layover)...

my flight from bdl to mco in sept changed by an hour still nonstop. flight home on jetblue hasnt changed . I keep checking just to make sure !

Still not sure what you saw, but if you are saying that people can't book seats right now, I would be aware that they could cancel this flight in the future. So they don't outright cancel now (have to pay refunds) but keep it on the schedule while not allowing further bookings. They may cancel later. I would continue to check booking and of course ymmv.
If the other seats are not available other people are sitting in them.

If the other seats are not available other people are sitting in them.
In early May, some airlines (United, JetBlue) were cancelling some flights, but to avoid having to pay refunds right away they were just blocking off new reservations. So it prevented more people from having to be reaccommodated when the flight was actually cancelled and avoided having to refund people immediately. I thought that maybe if the poster could not choose her seats, they were doing this.

I do know that airlines do not let more than one person sit in a seat and that, to avoid this from possibly happening, they put a big X on the seating chart, designating occupied seats, when it is time for you to choose your seat.
