While I always sympathize with workers who have benefits cut.....in most parts of the country part time workers simply do not get benefits of any kind. Vacation, health care, sick days, etc. It's been an ongoing mess that business cut employees hours to 30-35 hours a week so that they can be classified as "part time" and therefore lose their benefits. (and the really sucky part is most times those same employees have the same responsibilites they did when they were scheduled for 40 hours a week).
So, if the
Disneyland employees have had these benefits as part timers for all this time, then they were lucky.
And if the report is right and other hotels in the area pay a couple dollars an hour more and give benefits, then I guess the Disneyland employees should apply there......it will get them what they want and if enough do it, may force Disney to not take away what they had.
Sorry, not a fan of unions and protests, especially when most times what the union is demanding is not what other employees around the country are getting. Yeah, maybe the argument then is that all employees should be part of a union, but having been a union employee once upon a time, I can say I'd never take another job that required union membership. I've yet to find many union members who are happy about what their union is doing (except right after the new contract gives them a raise in salary....because they didn't notice the other things they gave up).
I do find it a little disturbing that the protesters would dress up in costume and stand there spewing ugly words. The law protects them from being fired for protesting, but I hope Disney management is making a list and checking it twice when it comes time to hand out presents in the future. Can you imagine how awful it would be to be a guest and having to explain to your 4 year old that THAT Peter Pan isn't really THE Peter Pan so don't cry that he's being arrested? Definitely not employee of the month material.
