Check Out Time???

I know that usually check out time at all hotels is 11:00am. My daughter and her 3 friends have been staying at OKW since 02/29. When they checked in it was very late. The CM did not even give them the room number. Bell services was taking them to the room and once they got to the building they realized that no one had the room number. It was not written on any of the check in information so they had to go back to the front desk.

Today was their last day and they did not realize that they should check out by 11:00am. They went to the parks to have a good time. I spoke with my daughter to make sure they had checked out (after 11:00am) and she said she did not think they had to until the ME pick-up time at 2:50pm. I called OKW and talked with several people and they told me I would have to pay another day from points.

When they actually checked out, the CM told them that they had an auto checkout because they had submitted a credit card. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my points back?

If they did not vacate the room by 11 am I would think OKW was within their rights to charge you for another night. Just because they had auto-checkout doesn't mean they had vacated the room. I guess I'm not really sure what you are asking here.

You can call MS and see if you can get a CM to take pity on you, but the contract says if you aren't out of the room by 11, they can charge you more points.

In your post you did not mention when they actually vacated the room, if it was substantialy later they delayed the housekeeping staff from preparing the villa for the next party and the room probably was considered out of service. If that is the case the management was probably within their rights to deduct another nights worth of points. I would not hurt to call MS and explain the situation and maybe, just maybe you could get your points back. Good Luck.

Please post back after you talk to MS. However, we are responsible for the folks who use our points. This is one reason why I would never let some of my relatives use my points.

Did their keys work to get back into the room to get their stuff?

Yes the keys did work. I don't really have a problem with the fact that I have to use the additional points. I cannot find anywhere on the DVC member board where 11:00am is the stated time for check out. They did not receive any of that information when they checked in. I would have thought that would have been given to them. I also would have thought that it would appear on the ME notice because the pickup was after 11:00am.

I understand that we are obligated by the rules, but I was of the opinion that the rules are usually given at check in...I know that most hotels have an 11:00am checkout but this is the first time my college daughter has stayed at a hotel without us.

I was curious how everyone else handles this when they rent out their points. What makes the guest get out when they are supposed to?

Did you confirm that additional points have been deducted from your account? I would wait and not do anything until you actually see the adjustment.

Its posted on the back of the room door. They should have also been handed info when they checked in, its on page 27 of the member guidebook. Its out on the website as well.

It's also on the form you sign when you check in, and I've never had a CM not mention it to me at that time (although YMMV or possibly the girls weren't really taking it all in). I always thought the late checkout fine was $50...maybe you could get MS to let you pay that amt. instead.

I've never heard of a $50 late check out fee - only that you will be charged the points. You are lucky it was weekday points and not weekend points.

Not only are people told when they check in that check out is 11AM, it is also in the Public Offering Statement. It's also noted on your reservation sheet that you get from MS.

As someone who had to wait until nearly 6PM for another guest to vacate my room, it makes me rather glad that DVC is finally charging the guests who decide to stay later rather than check out on time.

I think you and your daughter just learned a hard lesson.

:rolleyes1

oooh that was tough one to swallow:rolleyes1

That wouldn't make any sense. If all I had to do to extend my reservation was not check out and wait for DVC to bill me the extra points because "by rights" I could do that, there would be people who couldn't get the extra nights on their vacation and would just "not check out" - leaving guests who had reservations roomless.

I had a conversation for my first BWV stay several years ago - it was right after they made the Boardwalk View a booking category. I said "that must be nice for you guys - keeps people from throwing tantrums at check in" - He said "no, they just throw tantrums at check out or when we have to move them - we have to have security move their bags out of their room and into their pool view room pretty regularly."

DITO popcorn::

I'm sorry your daughter lost you some points, but the checkout time is all over the place. It's in several places in the packet of info they get at checkin, several places in the room, the confirmation letter, reminders on the TV -- it's really pretty hard to miss.

They were probably just excited and having a good time and not paying any attention.

DVC is just like any hotel.
Check out is generaly around 11:00.Any one who travels knows this.
Some hotels offer late check out.
Assuming that check out is based on individual travel plans is niave.
i believe that this is just a young inexpeiernced traveler who has learned a lesson.
