Cheapest Way To Replace a Directv Receiver?

Let me start by saying I hate Directv and only have it because my husband insists on it...

Okay, we have an HD receiver/recorder from Directv that has made it exactly one year before dying. We'll need to replace it, but I'm wondering if there is a cheaper way than ordering through Directv. I'm not interested in a refurb because that will likely die a quick death too. What are my options?

Ebay? Our cable guy told me to sell our DirectTv on Ebay! I asked him if he would take it and he couldn't. It was there when we moved in.

Go to www.weaknees.com (or maybe it's weakknees.com - with 2 "k"s in the middle). They are awesome and sell all kinds of refurbished receivers that are really good (despite that you said you don't want refurb - we bought one a few years ago and it's been working perfectly). We have been making do with our aging DirectTV TiVo receiver for a few years while we wait for them to release new TiVo models and we have done a few things with Weaknees (new hard drive and something else I think too).

We love our DirectTV though - we have been customers for almost 10 years and haven't really not liked the other cable company alternatives when we had them for short periods of time. But you gotta have a TiVo receiver, IMO. (We think the DirectTV HD receiver stinks).

I would go there before I bought on ebay. They have warranties as well - they probably sell new things as well, I just haven't checked into that.

I just had to chime in when I saw your first sentence. I literally could have written it. I HATE DIRECTV TOO! The ONLY, and I do mean ONLY reason we have had it for 6 years is the partnership they have with the NFL package for football season. We live in Virginia, and my husband is a die hard Raider's fan, so we have to subscribe to it. How I wish they would partner up with another provider. I cringe every month when I pay the bill. They are HORRIBLE!!!!!

Did you purchase your receiver? When ours went out after 28 months they shipped us a new one and had us return the broken one in the same box. But we are renting it.

We have it because my DH wants the hockey package they offer. We have been through so many poor receivers I can't believe it. And let me tell that the night it went out during a storm and the Sopranos was on was NOT a pretty night in my house!!
