Does anyone have any suggestions on where to find really cheap yarn? My daughter's birthday is coming up and she wants a really long Rapunzel braid for decoration so I am looking for yellow.

THANKS!

Michaels and Joann's sell a BIG skein of yarn (I think its called "THE POUNDER" or the "ONE POUNDER") that costs about $7.99 but they put it on sale a lot. If it's not on sale, you can use one of their 40% off coupons on it.

Other ideas: my local goodwill often has yarn.
Ocean State Job Lot often has yarn, but it's usually the fringe kind, but you never know what type might show up there.

THANKS so much! I'll check Michaels tomorrow for that!

I bought one thing of yarn at Wal-Mart for less than $3 and made a good-sized braid out of it for my daughter's party. Was going to hang it from our roof, but I was too short with the stepstool, so I was too lazy to get out the big ladder and just hung it over the front door. It's still floating around the house and she plays with it occasionally.

I will say the toughest part is keeping the free ends from tangling up while braiding it. Although I did mine all alone, it would be easier with help. Still turned out pretty well.

Still have about half the yarn left, so I could have went pretty long, as it was, it's about 10 feet or so. I did 10 or 12 strands per section I braided.

If you have some time you could try craigslist or freecycle. If you know a knitter, ask her. I have a friend who is in a needle circle (crocheters and knitters) and I asked if she had any extra yarn for my Girl Scouts - I got yarn coming out of my ears. "Knitwits" tend to be fond of buying yarn for projects that don't happen, or buy yarn and discover its "wrong" for what they wanted. My mother in law is a needler (as well as a sewer) and can't pass it up at garage sales - she has more yarn and fabric than she'll ever use.

Wow! I'm thinking I have to buy a ton to make it long. This gives me hope!

Thanks everyone! I am not very crafty (although I would LOVE to be!) so you gave me some great ideas!

There are always tons of local knit groups. You could always see if someone has some they want to give away. Maybe get on ravelry.com and find a group in your area. Tell them you are in need of some yellow acrylic yarn.
