I have no idea about the service in Europe, but I know what you mean about the service at local chain restaurants. Half the time when we go out to eat at a chain the service is very lacking. We were at Chilis last week and it took over 20 minutes to get an order of chips and salsa. It came out about the same time as our dinner did. That is a big no-no when it is ordered as an appetizer. I also got tired of waiting for our drinks to be filled.


As a server, how can someone expect a good tip for service like this.

I've worked as a server for a little bit. It's tough work. I always try to leave a fair tip (try to figure out 18% and add a bit as a starting point), understanding that people have bad days and so many things can go wrong. I bump it up for great service.

So, when the dbf and I go to our favorite restaurant for a Super Special Date Night, since it's rare we can afford it, we request a specific server. She is an amazing server and the dbf's sister works at this particular place as a chef, so his entire family usually requests that server. I'm sure Agatha (server) gets excited whenever we walk through the door. The lowest tip we ever gave her was roughly 35%. As far as I'm concerned, she earns it and our repeat business.

I was not referring to the customer, I was referring to a person who gives poor service yet still expects a good tip.
