Cheap individual health insurance?

My husband was recently laid off, and his group health insurance plan ends at the end of the month. COBRA is going to cost upwards of $500 a month. Adding him to my health insurance is no better.

We don't have kids, and he is healthy and young and hardly ever needs to go to the doctor. I just want him to be covered in case of an emergency.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I don't even know where to start!

Thank you!

Does your husband have a Blue Cross group plan now by chance? If so, he may qualify for great rates on individual coverage through them. My hubby and I switched from our BCBS group plan to individual coverage when we left our last company. They have many options for deductibles and copays.

If he doesn't have Blue Cross, have him call his current company to see what they have for individual coverage. Also call an insurance agent and have them recommend some options. Younger people at our landscape company had no problem getting policies that covered accidents and major medical for around $70/month.

My husband is 58 and pays about $180/month. My policy for a 48 year old includes $500 in preventative care per year and costs me $165/month.

Prices on individual plans are based on age so there are some great rates out there for younger people. Just keep in mind that individual coverage is rarely as comprehensive as a group plan. If he gets sick, you can always add him to your plan during annual enrollment.
