Che Fartsmith's Is the (Starts with B) Trash! No, BEST! 2 weeks of Disney Dining! Update: 10/28

or drinks, I had a bottle of Coke, $2.99, and Luke had a Schofferhoffer Grapefruit beer, $9. This is the same beer they sell in the German Pavilion at Epcot, and it’s very light – even I’m ok with the taste of it, and I hate beer!
Schofferhoffer is practically juice! It also doesn't have a very high alchol content. Almost half of most beers, which also might be why you don't hate it.

Both of those desserts look sooo good!!!! I am having disney dessert withdrawl!

I just realized I forgot to copy this post in (I write everything on my personal blog first - I often don't write them in chronological order there) - it's not a very exciting review, but I'm including it anyway because it'll help my actual food cost math make sense haha (this was before Crew's Cup Lounge on January 3rd)

Karamel Kuche - January 3, 2018

One of my favourite places in Epcot is Karamel Kuche, located in the German Pavilion. I had to make a stop on this day to load up on goodies, and we left with a bag of their Werther’s Popcorn ($5.99), a chocolate covered smore ($4.49), a chocolate caramel cookie ($4.49) and a dark chocolate covered caramel with sea salt ($3.99). I didn’t take pictures of anything except the cookie, when I ate it for breakfast two days later (and it was still delicious!)

This is one of those places I can see us visiting on every trip! Even the smell of it is amazing!

Predicted food budget: $2631.67 (does not include tip)
Estimated Cost of this meal: $31.95 (snacks at Epcot)
Actual Cost: $20.19
Over/Under: Under by $11.76 Remaining: $1945.01

Highway in the Sky - January 4, 2018

Highway in the Sky was announced shortly before our January 2017 trip, but it sold out so quickly we didn’t even have a chance to try and fit it into our schedule. It was one of the top things we wanted to experience on our wedding trip though, so we kept stalking the website waiting for booking to open. We actually had a few nights during our vacation where we could have fit it in, we weren’t 100% sure which nights of the week it would be offered on.

Finally, Luke texted me one day that booking had opened for the dates of our trip, and he had already paid for and reserved two spots for us on the first Thursday night we were there.

This is an expensive event, I believe it was $159/person plus tax when we booked (but that included gratuity), but it was our wedding trip and we felt like treating ourselves. #treatyoself (Also – the price has increased since this point, and I believe when we went to this in May 2019 it was up to $170/person)

The evening began by meeting up at the Contemporary, and heading to the Wave to sign in. Once they verified our names against their list, we were handed a lanyard and invited to take a seat in the waiting area of the restaurant.

2C392E90-DBD5-41F6-8367-4DC5DFCA998C-e1582173057606.jpeg

After a short wait, someone from the Wave came over and talked a bit about the restaurant, before servers appeared with our first drink and food item of the night. Typically they serve a fairly standard cocktail, but it was really cold outside so they switched it up to a hot drink. We each received a warm rum butter apple cider with whiskey and a maple foam. I apologize for the terrible picture of this, it was dark where we were sitting.

aIlqp7vOoedq3r3moIavie1QhrrObYPenafrEFad2iITN7EZ56BU3pja1iuCtMBsHsD8KuJkzS4TT0BNEIR2B4RFZ1pJ5cWv6r_uwMcYy7QUz_D0eMNtnIlBGIVBQb0d4zj4DY2X

I wish this drink was on a regular menu somewhere on property, I would go out of my way just to get it. I absolutely loved it – the Maple wasn’t too overpowering (I’m Canadian, I know my Maple products haha), it wasn’t hot enough to burn my tongue which was nice and it wasn’t too strong – I never want to taste the alcohol in my first drink of the evening. We were off to a delicious start to the night!

They also brought around little cups with butternut squash soup. I’d honestly never tried this before because I just assumed I wouldn’t like it (I don’t like squash at all – but apparently blend it with cream and I’m a fan?). This was a very small serving, but it was really good! (Pictures are before and after I stirred it up)

After a few minutes of chatting with some of the other couples there that night, the cast members came around and rounded us up, leading us to security and up onto the monorail. The three cast members assigned to Highway in the Sky are in constant communication with the monorail drivers, so you never actually have to stand around waiting – the monorail is actually waiting for the group! They also keep the entire front car empty just for your group, which is a nice touch that really makes you feel like a VIP!

After boarding at the Contemporary, we rode the monorail over to the Polynesian. They escorted us inside to the open space on the second floor, where they had set up four-top standing tables decorated with cute little Polynesian touches.

Seating was not assigned, so we just found a table with two empty spots and introduced ourselves to the other couple. A Polynesian Resort cast member came out to tell us all about dining at the resort, while cast members came around putting a Mai Tai in front of each of us.

I loved these slanted glasses, and this drink was strong! The Polynesian Resort cast member described the food we were about to eat before the three small plates were placed in front of us. The ukelele player who I’ve seen at ‘Ohana before then came out and played for us while we ate.

The first small plate was ???? The second one was some kind of sushi and the third one was pork belly. The first two didn’t interest me at all, but the pork belly was delicious!

Once we had finished eating, we were rounded up once again and escorted back to the monorail (this time skipping security). Our destination this time was the Grand Floridian for the entree portion of the evening. We were led to Citricos, and we were called by couple and led to assigned tables in the restaurant. There was a bread basket on each table, and servers came around offering a choice of red or white wine (I went white, Luke went for the red). I’m not a huge wine person, this was dryer than I tend to go for but I still drank it. I can’t tell you anything about it haha – I’m not one of those people who can describe the flavours in a wine.

The main course was a surf and turf – on this night it was a boneless beef short rib and halibut, served with mashed potatoes and green beans. I don’t eat seafood of any kind, so I quickly shoved my fish onto Luke’s plate and just enjoyed the beef (he gave me quite a bit of his beef in return). It was perfect – fall apart tender, the sauce was really tasty and the mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy.

Once we had finished up, we were told to head downstairs to the Tea Room, where we each received a glass of champagne and a charcuterie plate.

The champagne was definitely the Fairy Tale Cuvee that was served at our wedding a few days later – it’s ok (but I don’t love champagne to begin with). The charcuterie doesn’t look like much, but it was tasty! I didn’t try the blue cheese or the pickles or the mustard (I’ve come a long way, but I can still be a bit picky at times haha). I enjoyed everything else on the plate though! Not pictured was a little plate of baguette.

When we headed back upstairs, we had a few minutes before the monorail arrived, so we took a group picture, and tried to see how many characters we could spot on the floor.

There’s a lot more than that, but it’s another one of those little details that I just love about Disney!

Our monorail arrived, and we piled back in to head to our final stop of the night – back to the Contemporary. The final part of Highway in the Sky is a private viewing of the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the fourth floor balcony, along with some desserts. Typically the desserts and drinks (canned soft drinks, coffee, tea, Bailey’s, Kahula, Frangelico, etc) are set up outside, but due to how cold it was on this evening, they set up it up inside. We each grabbed a plate with some desserts, I had a can of Coke and Luke had a coffee with Bailey’s. We were able to sit on the couches just inside the fourth floor balcony enjoying our final snacks of the evening until shortly before the fireworks started.

As we headed outside to watch the fireworks, the cast members handed us a blanket to wrap up in so we would stay warm. Obviously you are too far away to see the castle projections, but the view of the fireworks from here is great!

As we exited and handed the blankets back in, we were each handed a small box with the Contemporary Resort logo and chocolate truffles inside. It was a nice little parting gift after a wonderful evening!

Overall, we really enjoyed this experience, and did it again on our May 2019 trip. I didn’t love all the food on this night (but that’s just because I’m a bit picky and don’t like seafood) – but I still felt the value was there! Since they keep the groups small, you really feel like a VIP, and the food that I actually did eat was all great!

They also brought around little cups with butternut squash soup. I’d honestly never tried this before because I just assumed I wouldn’t like it (I don’t like squash at all – but apparently blend it with cream and I’m a fan?). This was a very small serving, but it was really good!
I am not either but every once in awhile you get something yummy like that soup. I had asparagus soup once and thought it would be terrible but it was actually really tasty!

I am suprised they don't ask before hand food preferences. It is a pricey expierence!

But glad you guys had a good time. A progressive meal just sounds so fun!

They do calla week or two ahead of time to ask about allergies - but my aversion to seafood is just a preference so we didn’t mention it. Silly us! We made sure to tell them before we did Highway again in 2019, and I ended up eating a lot more on that night!

It was SO cold when we did Highway in the Sky, too, and I'm realizing (DUH!) that's because this was the same week we did ours. We went on Wednesday, for some reason that sticks out in my mind. How AMAZING would it have been if we ended up at the same one?!! Poor planning on our part :)

Hi stranger!!!! Glad to see you on here talking about my 2 favorite subjects. Food and drinks :drinking1 I don't think I've seen much about Highway in the Sky but it looks like a ton of fun. Definitely pricy but seems worth it for all that you get.

Liberty Tree Tavern - January 5, 2018

A restaurant that had been on my radar for awhile was Liberty Tree Tavern, and we finally found space to fit it into our schedule. It was very busy when we checked in, so we went outside and watched the Muppet show around the corner. Eventually, our names were called – but it was over half an hour past our reservation time. This seems to be a somewhat common occurrence at this restaurant – I don’t know if they overbook it, or don’t book the tables for a long enough period of time – but it’s a little thing I find very annoying. If I show up 15 minutes late to a reservation, Disney can cancel it and charge me a no-show fee, but it’s ok for them to keep me waiting 30-60 minutes past my reservation time?

Anyways, enough complaining. I hadn’t really ate up to that point in the day, so I think I was just a bit hangry haha. We were led to our table – a four-top in the first room on the right hand side. I know they’ve named each room after different presidents, but I can’t remember now what the name of our room was – not that it makes your experience any different.

Since we had a four-top for just the two of us, Frederick the AT-AT even got his own chair. Hey – if I was going to lug this thing around all day, I was going to make it worthwhile with pictures of him!

Once seated, the meal moved quickly. Our server came to take our drink orders – a Coke for me (included in the cost of the meal), and a Press Pot Coffee for Luke, $8.

2830BE16-5637-401F-BF63-CA5D772C53E7-e1572386193714-768x1024.jpeg

Our basket of rolls appeared quickly, and they were delicious (all white bread is delicious to me). They were slightly warm, and the butter was really nice and soft and easy to spread.

CFF3917A-C2C0-471F-A051-83EE3E542DC9.jpeg

Our salad arrived next: Declaration Salad – tossed mixed greens with house-made dressing. I never feel like I eat enough vegetables at Disney, so it’s always nice when it’s included with my meal! Luke and I polished this off no problem – he got to eat all those yucky onions sitting on top haha.

AEDB63AE-4B23-4D6B-9B57-B887EA0634FF.jpeg

Before too long, our server arrived with the Patriot’s Platter – roast turkey breast, pot roast, oven roasted pork, mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, herb stuffing and house-made mac and cheese. They also bring you a gravy boat to pour over your food, and a side of cranberry sauce.

I’m not sure why they bother saying “seasonal vegetables” – it’s Disney, so they always just serve green beans…

This was all so good! I still don’t understand the love affair with Mac and cheese – I always try a bite of it when it’s offered, but I rarely go back for a second bite. I guess it’s just not my thing. The meat was great though, as were the mashed potatoes and stuffing. The green beans were pretty standard Disney beans, but we still ate them. We were clearly hungry, and actually managed to put an impressive dent into the platters of food!

As much as we stuffed ourselves – we did remember to leave room for dessert – the famous Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake – vanilla cake with gooey toffee filling, caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.

While we were eating, I was texting my Dad and sending him pictures of our meal. He was actually at the airport on a layover, heading towards Orlando that night! He was very jealous, and thought this looked much better than his airport snacks haha.

This was so good, definitely worth all the hype! We returned here for another meal on a trip after this, and the presentation of the dessert had changed, and they only gave a tiny little piece of the Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake (along with two other options) – but they were more than happy to bring us a more sizeable piece when asked. This dessert is almost worth the entire meal to me, it’s one of my favourite sweet things I’ve ate at Disney!

Happily Ever After Dessert Party - January 5, 2018

Luke and I love HEA, and we had never done a dessert party at Magic Kingdom so we worked this into our schedule. We showed up at Tomorrowland Terrace, where we checked in at 7:49pm. They verified we were on the list, and sent us up the ramp to begin enjoying the snacks. It was not sold out on this night (despite the crowds in the park), so it was easy to find a table.

IMG_9912.jpg

I took pictures of the entire dessert buffet spread – enjoy!

We were both excited to see POG juice as an option. Not pictured were the bottles of water you could also grab.
Luke ended up getting a tea (it was another chilly night and he wanted something to warm up with), a glass of POG juice and a bottle of water. I went for a bottle of water and a glass of POG juice. Here’s pictures of our first plates –

IMG_9930.jpg

IMG_9931.jpg

It was Frederick the AT-AT’s first dessert party! He was eying up our food – but once again, he’s an inanimate object so he doesn’t eat…

IMG_9932.jpg

I have this picture of another plate – I think we shared? Typically at a buffet like this, Luke will finish before me and then ask if I want anything picked up when he goes back up, then I’ll ask him the same when I go back for my second pass. We definitely both went back a few times haha.

IMG_9933.jpg

The cheesecake brownie bites were my favourite thing, I really enjoyed those a lot. It was also nice to have some fruit (even though there was only the chocolate-covered variety on the second plate haha)!

A bunch of people had rushed out the viewing area as soon as they were able to so they could get the front of the viewing area. This wasn’t our first time seeing HEA (this week), so we weren’t in a hurry. We filled our bellies until we felt like we had got our money’s worth, then made our way over to the viewing area.

We ended up standing at the very back of the fenced off viewing area, but there was about 10 feet in front of us without people. It was actually fantastic, we didn’t feel we were looking over anyone’s head, we had room to breathe without being crammed in like sardines and there was a fence directly behind us to lean against. It was a really great place to watch the show!

Overall, we really enjoyed this dessert party, and it was a wonderful way to end a day that had started so terrible. *Spoiler alert* – I ended up back at this dessert party the next week unplanned. Luke and I haven’t been back together on any subsequent trips, but I’m sure we will do a Magic Kingdom dessert party again one day!

We loved the dessert parties but we did the after dessert party and I think we have been too tired to enjoy the desserts after. I am torn on the dessert parties at this point. I kind of want to, just to be able to see the fireworks and not stress about crowds.

Glad to hear you all enjoyed your meal at Liberty Tree. We've never done the AYCTE meal but have always enjoyed their a la carte lunch options. Sadly they aren't currently serving it, but hoping it comes back soon. I need some ooey gooey in my life.

Luke can make a really great replica of the ooey gooey cake! It's what I've been requesting for my birthdays lately :)

We didn't try the after fireworks dessert party - I think the Epic trip was our only trip where that was an option - and we already had way too many things scheduled for that week.... and now that's something we'll need to wait a few more years for - staying up that late doesn't sound like very much fun with a toddler haha.

Oliva's Cafe - Breakfast - January 6, 2018

For my Dad’s first morning at Disney, we decided to take him to Olivia’s Cafe, located at Old Key West.

Luke went for the exact same breakfast he had on our previous trip there the year before – Eggs and Hash: 2 eggs served any-style over sweet potato ham hash, topped with key lime hollandaise, served with a buttermilk biscuit ($14). He also ordered a coffee ($2.99).

IMG_9960.jpg

Luke once again loved this meal, and joined the clean-plate club! I actually don’t see this on the current menu – hopefully it’s just because of Covid and all the restrictions in place – otherwise Luke will be very sad!

I went in thinking I’d order the banana bread french toast again, but our server let us know there were a few special offerings just for Marathon weekend. After hearing the description of each item I decided on the Chicken and Waffles ($16), and a glass of apple juice ($3.59).

IMG_9961.jpg

This needs to be on the full-time menu! I don’t have the official description, but it was classic Mickey waffles and the same chicken Olivia’s uses for their Southernmost Buttermilk Chicken on the dinner menu. There were also pickles and strawberries on the plate, maple syrup on the waffles and everything had a shake of powdered sugar over top. I loved this (I mean, what’s not to love?!). I actually did a decent job on this and put a considerable dent in my plate (except for those pickles, they were all shoved to the side because yuck).

My Dad went for the Waffles and Eggs – Waffles with Two Eggs-Any Style with choice of Bacon, Ham or Sausage with Maple Syrup ($15). He chose bacon, and asked for his eggs scrambled. He also had a glass of orange juice ($3.49). He also ordered the side of Strawberries and Whipped Cream ($5)…. they are a little generous with the whipped cream hahaha. My Dad loves fruit, and just wanted some for breakfast – instead he received a few strawberries and a bowl of whipped cream….

IMG_9962.jpg

IMG_9963.jpg

His plate doesn’t look too exciting, but you can never go wrong with Mickey waffles!

Luke and I love Old Key West, and I’m sure we’ll stay there again one day – which means we will eat at Olivia’s again in the future!

For the below math, only mine and Luke’s meal counted towards our actual cost, since my Dad paid for his meal himself.

Tables in Wonderland original cost: $150
Break Even Point Before this meal: $62.32
Savings this Meal: $12.01
Total Until Breaking Even: $50.31

Actual Cost: $31.17
Over/Under: Under by $4.27

and now that's something we'll need to wait a few more years for - staying up that late doesn't sound like very much fun with a toddler haha.
yeah, we didn't see fireworks for the first 2 or 3 trips. We def waited till the girls were much older to see fireworks and all the night stuff. But it is still a magical time!

How old were the girls when you guys started going to the parks? We actually just tentatively booked a trip to Disneyland for 2022, and Jocelyn will be 6-7 weeks away from turning 2...

I'm now half-way through this dining report (only took me 3.5 years :rolleyes1 ) -maybe I'll have it finished before our 5 year wedding anniversary haha...

Basically this post is just to say thank you to everyone who is sticking around and still reading! I really appreciate it <3

50's Prime Time - Lunch - January 6, 2018

Luke and I had ate here on our first trip to Walt Disney World, back in 2016, and I didn’t love it. The atmosphere and theming were great, but my food wasn’t. Luke loved his meal though, and I really wanted to like this restaurant, so I decided I was willing to give it another chance. Originally it was supposed to be just Luke and I at Hollywood Studios this morning, so we made a reservation for two at 12:50. However, once we realized my dad would be flying in on January 5th instead of the 6th, we were able to drop our reservation and get one for three people instead at 1:05pm.
We didn’t tell my Dad anything about this place, and he hadn’t researched it (he didn’t research anything about Disney haha – he just showed up and knew I’d take care of it). He had such a confused, puzzled look on his face while we were standing in the waiting room to be called in – the servers just yell out the last name of the group they are looking for (and some of them really yell loud). While we were waiting I enjoyed looking at the little details in the waiting room – like the hidden Mickey on the end tables.

06C78823-61FD-4D05-B298-B402B9D2E644-e1578267581244.jpeg

Eventually my name was called, and we were led inside- to the exact same table Luke and I had sat at when we ate there in 2016! Frederick the AT-AT got a prime spot right by the TV –

907585F4-05B7-45F3-A54C-7469D2180C3D.jpeg

Our server, Chris, was immediately in character and started giving us sass. My Dad caught on quickly and started playfully giving him attitude back. When Chris came back over, he dropped a stack of napkins and a dish of cutlery on the table, and informed my Dad he would be the one setting the table for this meal. Dad was loving this place, he was laughing and smiling the entire time he was setting the table.

Now for the drinks: Luke knew before we even got there that he would be ordering one of their Peanut Butter and Jelly milkshakes, $7 – he loved the one he’d had from there in 2016, and he loved this one.

I didn’t take a picture, but Dad ordered a Strawberry milkshake, $7. I hadn’t trained him yet to not try his food until I got a picture of it for my food reviews hahaha. He was happy with it, and drank it all. I try to limit the amount of dairy I eat (it doesn’t always agree with my stomach), so I skipped a milkshake and ordered a Vanilla Coke, $4.

After we ordered our food, I took some pictures of our surroundings while we waited.

On to the food: Dad decided to order A Sampling of Mom’s Favourite Recipes – Golden Fried Chicken, fork tender pot roast and traditional meatloaf with all the fixings, $24.

He enjoyed everything, and cleared his plate. I guess I picked a good restaurant to be Dad’s first in-park food experience!

Luke went for the Cousin Megan’s Traditional Meatloaf – blend of beef and pork topped with tomato glaze served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and green beans, $18

I had been really disappointed in my meal here back in 2016, I had the Chicken Pot Pie and was not a fan at all. I was determined to have a better experience this time, and decided to order the Mom’s Old Fashioned Pot Roast – slow cooked til fork tender served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, brown gravy and garnished with julienned carrots and celery, $21.

How old were the girls when you guys started going to the parks? We actually just tentatively booked a trip to Disneyland for 2022, and Jocelyn will be 6-7 weeks away from turning 2...
So, our first trip, Morgan was 5 and Gwen was 2 turning 3 in 1 month. So, a year older than Jocelyn will be for your trip. I do think Disneyland will be easier if you have a hotel close by. There are so many so close by that going back for naps and stuff will be a breeze compared to Disney World! We were big on naps and honestly at that age they were VERY NEEDED!!! But my girls NEVER slept in strollers. Especially in the park. there was too much to see and do. Some kids will and I have to assume makes things easier.

I love seeing your dad getting all into the Disney magic!
