I am a "don't make waves" person too.. I feel you pain and think you are very brave to speak up
Bus: one mile or more from school-- allowed bus but must pay (middle and high school) (it was more than 6 blocks for elementary).
Free if you are on lunch program.
More than two miles = free bus (we are more than 2 miles for J, one mile even for N)
This district is very good about asking for funds.. they have a budget to keep the community informed thru newsletter mailings to everyone in area, local cable TV ads, ads in community newspapers, etc..
Considering the high school is rated in the top 500 in the nation... they can ask for all the money they need/want and will likely get it!
I remember Duluth schools being old descript buildings as a child.. we had bats flying in the hallways at my grade school
Over the years they gradually cut back on costs.. cutting some sports, arts, phy ed to just one semester in high school needed.
They still use the same high school building, 20 years later.. which amazes me as some parts were built in the 1920s .. we had plaques on hallway walls dedicated to students who left school to fight in WW II.
