Shawna, that is an awesome cake! My boys would go nuts!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Can you write on the green flat side of the cake? Is there room? Somebody needs to invent candy letters of the alphabet, you could just press them into the side of the cake to spell out a message! :rotfl:

Though there is an uneven number of cars, that may cause problems... ;)

:lmao: I know I have to take 1 away because there is not enough room to add one. I had intended 4. I wont place the cars til we get there and I think I'll do 2. :lmao:

Yes I could write on the side but I hate doing that. :scared: It always turns out bad.

Angel food cake is diabetic friendly.
Or maybe some fruit.

Or there are reduced sugar cake mixes, Pillsbury brand-- new to the market. :)

Has she gone to a dietician yet? Some of the diabetes training materials can make it all seem much to much to cope with the big changes. But there are some great websites and other info that is user friendly.

My BIL cheats all the time, heck hubby never stuck to the renal diet either. (not diabetic.. thank goodness! It's common to be diabetic AND kidney failure... unfortunately uncontrolled diabetes leads to renal disease)

Not sure how much my dad follows diet, sadly he is on insulin now.. and having a lot of highs and lows. But we can't tell him anything.. he gets surly and yells. :sad2: I predict 5 years he will be on dialysis, he already has had a few problems with blockage in the renal arteries and whacked out blood levels.
I gather sugar and fat account for a good portion of the flavoring in foods, because low-sugar stuff often is high in fat (bad for DH) and low-fat stuff is often high in sugar! Angel food cake is not bad at all for DH as cakes go, but he hates the stuff.

I wonder if he'd hate a homemade one, I think he hates the store bought ones but not sure if he's ever had a homemade one before... Or what about Bisquick? My mom makes a biscuit kind of thing she cuts into wedges and then puts fruit on top...

DSis said no cake, so I don't know if that's just her being bossy or if she really means it's too much whatever. Too much carbs? Sugar? Temptation? Portion control??? :confused3

I guess if it came down to it, we could have 2 desserts available... That might be the better option than trying to find one thing that fits everyone.

cool cake!

Maybe a sign "Happy smashing birthday" like a banner/finish line at the end of the road? Or in the grassy area....
:confused3

Cute! I wish I would have thought of that so I could do that in color flow icing beforehand. Maybe I could just use construction paper with a tooth pick or dowel rod.

Great idea Bernice.

You could do it like a banner on the side of the cake (then could use whatever color lettering you like), or at the finish line! On DS's pirate ship cake, I had a pirate flag (made out of Jolly Roger stickers and a little swizzle-stick type flag from one of the kids' toys) and attached another flag made from paper that I wrote "Happy Birthday" in teeny tiny letters. There was just no room on the cake itself! :rotfl:

I still am not set up to store photos online, but did I ever send you the pirate ship photos?

I'm looking at them now, though, and the cake is pretty crude compared to your cakes.

I misspoke. I think I tried the little flag first and it didn't work. So I got a giant metal skewer, used the Jolly Roger stickers at the top to look like a pirate flag (and cover the round loop at the 'handle' end of the skewer) and made paper sail shapes to write lettering on. :)

cake is carby.. lots of sugar, fat and starch.

But a low sugar, low fat is do-able if you make it yourself using splenda and your fave fat replacement (prune, pumpkin, applesauce, bananas)

oooooooo cupcakes :thumbsup2 Instant portion control. :)

unless you eat like 3 of them:rolleyes1

Alex, that cake is adorable!!! Its so good. I love the detail of the wood on the ship! You did a great job! :cool1:

Jake just asked if he could have that cake for his birthday. :goodvibes

Awww, thanks! I was so proud of it at the time! I had never done a decorated cake before (other than with sprinkles or something simple, that is) so this was quite an effort for me! And DS was so cute, he gushed, "Mama, that was the best cake ever!" and gave me a big hug.

But now I'm looking at it, seeing all the little mistakes and how it looks uneven and sort of floppy. :rotfl:

I didnt notice! It looks so cute. :goodvibes Did you use a toothpick or a knife to make the wood pattern or did you use a template?

I used a modified 'plan' from something I found online. The online cake is actually made from 9" round cakes, two of them each cut in half, then the halves stacked and laid together on their curved side to form the shape of the ship. But so many people who tried to copy it said it all fell apart, and different things others did to try to combat gravity that didn't work well, either.

So I made a pirate 'barge' using two rectangular cakes stacked one on top of the other, then cut the sides to form the bow shape. Much easier and more stable, though perhaps not as picturesque. :)

Yup, a toothpick. Just 'drew' rectangular shapes in the (too soft) frosting. Would have looked better if the frosting were a bit thicker, you know? But whatever. And it tasted good! :)

And isnt that the real reason we have cake!!!!!

You know I'm not very creative. I can expand on someone elses idea but I have trouble coming up with them on my own. I usually search online and put a couple cakes together then make it my own by modifying it. Thank goodness for the internet! :lmao:
