Charity Cases

The request that started this thread does not fit this scenario. They have been to WDW about ten (10) times in the past year. ...

Actually the request that started the thread was not the one that is being talked about the most. I noticed a thread where someone wanted cheap DVC points for a time in Oct. Someone else told them that it might be hard getting the time they needed for a cheap rate and had they considered the value resorts. The OP on that thread made a response to this helpful information that kind of ruffled my feathers and prompted me to initiate the "charity case" thread.

But I do sometimes wonder why DVC owners should subsidize non-owners vacations. And give them all the DVC perks, like discounts and pool hopping.

Deb,

Thanks for noticing my attempt to be helpful. My posts were later pulled from that thread. I'm guessing it was because mentioning a Value Resort had nothing to do with Rent/Trade (?). I'm not positive, because I never got a PM afterwards. I'm guessing no news is good news! ;)

I did notice that the poster ended up booking at a moderate, and withdrew the request on the other board, so maybe your post hit home...

I just don't understand why DVC owners would pay for points and maint. fees and then just "give" them away to people. I admit I have no intention of renting points, ever. If for some reason we could not use them in a given year, I would bank whatever I could. I also tend not to believe hard luck stories posted on message boards. I know people who have had real issues with illness and can't fathom them ever using that illness to try and get a cheap vacation. The Thailand thing just seems absurd.

Well somone like that should be blaclisted from the rent trade board especially if they are trying to cheat people out of money for their points when they know they have enough money to pay the going rate did I see somone post they then rented out points for 12-14 dollars a point? If that is the case I say we call tehm on it and let everyone know on teh rent trade they are lowlife scum renting points on the cheap and re renting them at a premium I hate people like that taking advantage of somones generosity for their own personal gain.

Charles, you've kind of merged two seperate people here.

The person who is buying up points at 7-9 pp, then reselling at 12-14 pp, is using a similiar ploy to play on the emotions and good will of fellow DVC members. She posts about "dear sweet sisters with many children who have never been to WDW", and "family returning from the mission fields of Cambodia and Thailand for the past 4 years" as her bait.

She is a DVC member with a small contract. Through a loophole/deficiency in MS computer programing, expiring points take on her use year, giving new life to the points. Very often, she rents prime dates then sells the reservations, to the detriment of every other DVC member. She has admitted to me that she is running a WDW travel agency out of her home, selling accommodations to her "friends". I sugessted she direct her friends to this board so they could save themselves her take! She didn't think so....

The second issue/poster was a woman pleading for DVC members to "take pity on us" (her words), as she outlined her families health problems and mounting medical bills. She told me privately that they had plenty of money, that she was only looking to get a "deal" on DVC accommodations. She saw nothing wrong with stating, or over stating, her families health and money problems publicly then retracted them privately. Since they've been to WDW about ten times in the past year, I dn't think money was the issue and it was a ruse to take advantage of a good hearted DVC member. Pretty sick.

I think both of these people, and I'm sure they're not alone (just the most obvious), are equally low and despicable.

Thanks TC I do know the one lady with people returning from missions had tole me she has contracts at BCV VWL and SSR and VWL I saw she rents points from people on the cheap she told me she rent out her points at 12.00 minimum. I rent mine for 12-16 but I do not go and rent other peoples points on teh cheap and re rent them out that is low.

I don't believe in renting out points. I pay enough in maintenance that I don't wish to think about non-owners trashing rooms ( and they really do ). On the same issue, I don't agree in renting out DVC units to cash guests ( for the same reason ). Over our ownership at BWV, we've seen some VERY TRASHED rooms. This is obviously intentional types of room abuse. Broken funiture, fixtures and holes in walls even cracked floor tiles. Now we just KNOW that people paying maintenance dues aren't doing this.
And I won't even start on the times I've tried to make a reservation at my home resort and can't because of cash bookings ( the fall golf tour comes to mind ).

Well this is all just my opinion :confused3

I don't know that it can be established that renters treat rooms any differently than members or member guests. Many DVC members allow friends and relatives to use their points - some may be more responsible than others. Many DVC members are more responsible than others. And then there are cash guests through CRO as well. I don't think its fair to place blame for conditions of the rooms on renters.

That said, if I were DVC I'd take steps to document the condition of the room between guests - easy enough with digital cameras, etc. nowadays, and I'd bill the member for damage done with their points - regardless if that was a member, a guest of a member or a paid guest of a member. Or bill the credit card on a CRO reservation. When rooms get trashed beyond normal "wear and tear" the responsible party should be picking up the bill, not the general membership.

Exactly. I followed her request with disgust. In fact, she modified her post a couple of days later to say that she had changed her mind and booked a moderate. Thus, deleting her initial request. Perhaps she found out about this thread.

She had been to at least two Deluxes this year, one time staying Concierge. She stated in general she wouldn't stay at any resort without a Florida Resident rate and that her child was having surgery and if she was going to rent from a DVC member, she couldn't afford more than $6.00 per point.

Perhaps two trips to WDW this year is enough with the pending surgery and the subsequent costs.

I am new to DVC, but as soon as I became a member, I borrowed against next year's points. Then we got more points and I used them and borrowed from the next year. I am thinking that as long as you are in the borrowing mode, you will never have to sell points for nothing so they don't expire. Does anyone agree?

Indeed she did see this thread. I sent her a link to it by PM several hours before she modified her request which outlined her dire family circumstances. Seems she got a case of conscience and deleted her post. She did forget to modify the previous thread where she asks DVC members to "take pity on us", as it is still in its original unedited form.

Even at that, she was very defiant, saying that her family had plenty of resources and had decided on POFQ.

I thought she had to. I'm not surprised at her arrogant response to you.

Thanks for the update.

BTW...great signature picture

When I frequented the Value Resorts (not by choice) I dreamed of staying @ the Villas. Explored renting points, but thought it was a scam...couldn't believe "owners" would let their points go for next to nothing.

Discovered these boards & within 6 months became a DVC owner (sight unseen). Only fly in the ointment was the inability to book studio @ VWL early Nov (slightly past the 7 month window) & Dec (in 11 month window). I know it's a popular time. But, after I started seeing the confirmed res. showing up on eBay & the rental boards with great regularity, I was somewhat disillusioned. Nothing but good, old fashioned plunking.

I understand that owners are forced/elect/decide to rent their points; but when members sell their points @ low price points, they devalue our commodity that needs to be protected. The fact that DVC practices ROFR to stablize the price point was the clincher in our decision to purchase. If people rent out their points so cheaply, I can infer that they'd do the same w/sale of their membership.

Sob stories aside, protect your asset. If you need to feel altrustic, rent your points for full value and donate a portion to the charity of your choice. At least you'll know someone worthy will benefit.

Well said!

I think you're right!!!- different name though I think or is there another one?

Personally I think there are many! A new poster playing the sob story to get a VWL 2 bedroom sure sounds familiar though. :badpc:

This is shameful and if i were these people that are out there lying i would feel awful. But since they continue to do it, it's obvious they don't care.
I'm sorry good people are being taken advantage of.

It is shameful, then again so is using something that one has not paid for such as a pool, a mug, or a room that only holds 4.

I am sure Bicker will agree.

The problem in this society is you have people that try their very best to adhere to high levels of integrity and those that pick and choose what they will adhere to.

This is just another level of someone that will find justification for what they do.

Someone PLEASE pm me....I really want to know who this is!!!

I have an idea! How well do you guys think this rental posting (hypothetical) will work:

Help out a desperate family of 5. Would love to rent our excess and unused DVC points so that I can provide some Holiday joy to my children. Dear son has a medical/dental condition and I need to buy braces. Dear Daughter (4) is very, very active and our Doctor states a bicycle will help her use up some of her energy.

Finally DD(16) is the best kid ever, an honors student and helps her parents at home, but we cannot give her the sweet sixteen she wants (thanks to MTV)

Thus we are asking if anyone wants to rent our 816 points at $13.50 or above.

Thanks for your help!

-Tony

So what doya think?
