Charging on MB withOUT a room reservation

So.... has this changed at all recently and I've missed it? Can you now charge onto a magic band if you do NOT have a room reservation that you are currently staying onsite with?

I know CMs give out incorrect information often so I just had to check with the experts.

Scenario was... my mother and I were at DTD, and she went to pay for something. She asked me if she had her MB with her, would she have been able to use that. I said, no, because you need a room reservation that it's attached to because technically it's charging to your room, not the actual credit card.

The CM said actually that's not accurate you can now charge to your MBs without a room reservation. This was my favorite part... "You just have to buy a new MB for $12.95 that doesn't have a prior room reservation attached to it".

Not that I know of, you can't charge a MB without a room yet.

I have an AP magic band and I can't charge to it because I don't have a card on file linked to it. The card is linked through a hotel, not the MDE app.

As far as I know. I'm sure it'll be implemented in the future though

Well I know you can link the CC to MDE. Mine is linked on the website. But I always understood that you can't charge on it unless it's to a room that you're currently staying at.

I figured it'd only be a matter of time before the ability to charge without a room does actually appear, but I can't see them telling people that have multiple magic bands from prior stays that they have to buy a new one. All the MBs do the same thing. Communicate with the website.

I'm going with "it can't be done". There is a mechanism in place to link the card to the reservation, not a mechanism to link the card to the band on MDE. Yes each person can have their own card linked but it refers back to the room portfolio

When one hits up the pos and pays by band the pos scans the band finds the associated reservation and charges that room portfolio linked to the band.

They would need to make additional changes to the back ends of MDE and their pos software and probably have to ask you if this is a credit charge or a room charge every time one scans their band too

You have to have a room. As Of right now to protect from identity theft your credit card and identification are verified upon check in to the hotel before charging can be activated on the band.

As the PP said it is really charging to your room and the card associated to it.

This may change in future but as of right now you must be staying on site to link and use a credit card thru your MagicBand.

OP, I agree that the CM was confused. We have AP bands, and my card is linked in MDE, which allows me to book ADR's at restaurants without re-entering the card information, for example. But it will not allow me to charge to my band without us staying on property.

"Confused" is generous LOL. Yes, this is what I always understood as well. I just wanted to check on here with my fellow DISers cause if this was possible, I knew people on here would know.

I can't believe the incorrect information though:
1) You can charge on a MB without a reservation
2) This is a new change "just last month" she said LOL
3) You have to buy a new unused MB with no prior reservation associated with it, in order for it to work.
