My son loves Planes (he's sitting next to me watching it now) - are any of the characters or any reference at all to that Disney movie anywhere in the parks?

Great question! I wish they did. The only thing they ever had for Cars was the lightning McQueen car at HS. I think planes is a similar challenge since like cars it would be hard to have a plane in a meet and greet.
At Disneyland, they used to have a few Planes planes flying around during the Soarin pre-show. I'm not sure why WDW never updated the pre-show like that.
I imagine it's now gone since the Soarin show changed.
Last Oct. there was still Planes Fire and Rescue merchandise in Carsland and Grizzly Peak Airfield in California adventure, but that's about it. Didn't see any reference to Planes at WDW when we were there in April.
Planes comes from DisneyToon Studios. Anything from them is rarely references in the Parks. The only Cars presence in WDW is a section of Art of Animation. Its not bizarre, its just Cars is somewhat of a Disneyland exclusive. Just like Toy Story will be a World exclusive.

Except DL has toy story mania, characters, mentions in parades, etc. WDW has no reference to cars/planes in any of their parks at all it seems. I'm surprised with the success of cars to have no reference at all.
