Charactermeals outside the park

We are off to Orlando this summer, and I am busy making plans. We thought we'd skip the Universal studios as our girls are only 4 and 8, and don't really relate to any of the Universal stuff.

But then I started thinking - what about Shrek, Despicable me..... - those are favourites in our home. Are there any charactermeals OUTSIDE of the park where we might meet some of the more "kidfriendly" characters?

(And not to mention Dora the Explorer and her friends - now that would make our 4yr old the happiest kid in town!)

So the character Dinners at the hotels, there's no additional costs on character nights? And what is the kids play area about? Do they go in there till their dinner is ready?

Tanks for the link! I had a look at it, but could not figure out if there are certain characters for certain meals (like Disney), or if you just have to hope for sonme of your favourites to show up? Sine our kids don't know many of the Universal characters, it seems a bit of a "risk" if we do not know beforehand?

There is no extra charge on character nights. I know at The Islands, there is a play area where the kids can go. It has a television, etc. Not sure about the other places but I assume it is the same.

I would call the hotel to check to see which characters are coming. It does change every now and then.
