Does anyone have any tips on where to find the characters first at any of the parks in order to miss the long line ups for autographs?

Book character meals. You have to eat anyway, and then your guaranteed a picture and/or an autograph. Any other place, you're going to run into a line.

Quiz the castmember at the tip board to find out when/where to find the characters you want to find.....

In MK be there at the time Mickey's tent opens, and run right over to the other tent with the 3 lines.

In AK visit the character area while the show is running.

In MGM Mickey is often a quick visit.

In MGM and EPCOT they bring the characters out in a large group in the central plaza... be ready and jump in line as soon as they get out. Have one parent in one line and another in a different line, have the child(ren) join each parent in turn.

In MK there are numerous other areas to visit characters at different times, ask at the tip board.

At MGM go to the animation tour and at the end there is a very nice meet and greet with the Incredibles and many others. We got about 15 autographs within 30 minutes. The best part was the lines were short (we had Minnie to ourselves for 5 minutes or more) and it is AIR CONDITIONED!
