The first time we went to Disney was when my twins (b/g) were 2 years old. Now here I am, planning trip 5 with 8 1/2 yr olds. Each trip has been wonderful and filled with memories. I made a ressie for CRT and would like some equally special for my son. Any suggestions? I'm also venturing out to new restaurants on this trip. I'm including Tusker House and coral reef this year. Any other suggestions? We always go to Biergarten and liberty tree tavern...those are "musts". I love planning as much as the trip!

1) Maybe 1900 Park Fare for character dinner.
2) Food = "so-so".
3) Character interaction = Very good.

NOTE: Dinner character interaction is good. The highlights are the dinner
ugly-step-sisters. They are usually a riot - and I seldom give such accolades.
For little kiddies, I would gladly trade the mediocre dinner food quality for
the character interaction. It seems the food is not as kid-friendly as breakfast.

Sci if diner - it's dark play old movies and kids get their own seat in the car - no characters
Garden grill - it revolves and has chip n dale for something different
Depending on when go skipper canteen sounds like it will be interesting and may suit boys, not characters but cool waiters by the sound of it
Yak n yeti - great food and lots to explore - no characters
Trex in DTD lots of animated dinosaurs

My 8-year-old son and I went on a 12 days dxddp adventure last November and hit every character meal WDW offers. His favorites: 1900 Park Fare breakfast (definitely not dinner), Tusker House, Garden Grill, and, because even boys are impressed by the castle, CRT.

His favorite non-character meals were HDDR, Chefs de France, Teppan Edo and 'Ohana for dinner with Boma as his overall Disney favorite!

Thanks for this question! I'm planning a January trip for myself, my friend and her almost 9 year old grandson and I'm trying to figure out what meals to do. So far I've booked Ohana dinner, Tusker house breakfast and BOG lunch.

I'm trying to decide what to do on arrival day Jan 18th (MLK day). We hadn't planned on going to any parks because of the crowds but I was wondering if it would be too bad to pop into a park for dinner. I was really leaning toward MK because I haven't planned a whole day there until our 3rd full day but I didn't know if it would be too crazy. I also considered Chef Mickeys but I'm leery because of all the bad reviews but thought that would be a good introduction to the characters. This is his first ever trip.

Decisions decisions. Any advice is welcome. :)

My son was 7 the last time we went. He's not really into the Pooh characters so that rules out Crystal Palace and hates Lilo and Stitch so that rules out O'hana. He really enjoys Chef Mickey's and Garden Grill. We are going again in January and he's requested that we eat at both restaurants again. Chef Mickey's is loud and chaotic. The food is fine for me. Not gourmet, but fine. Yes, it's overpriced, but it's Disney. Garden Grill is a bit more laid back. They serve the meal family style and I think the food is pretty good. We don't like fish, so we just request extra beef.

Just a thought, but have you asked him if he specifically wants a character meal or if a special "just for him" opportunity would fit the bill? If he doesn't necessarily want a meal, you could do one of the pirate experiences. At age 8, my son wanted to eat as fast as he could and get back out to the parks. That said, he did enjoy SciFi dine in and San Angel Inn for dining experiences.
