It has been a few years since we sailed DCL and we are looking at some last minute sailings. Is it almost impossible to get character meets or breakfast if you book and sail 4-6 weeks out? Are the same character meets/breakfast offered on every sailing or does it change? Is there a separate line once on board that allows another opportunity to book tickets and is there a thread that shows which characters are available to meet on each ship? Sorry for the slew of questions--I am not a last minute planner!!!

Not all character meets require a ticket. Only the Frozen and Princesses. Character breakfasts only on 7 night and longer cruises. You can check once onboard if there are tickets available for any of them. Sometimes there are.

Other character meets and just like at the parks , line up and get your picture taken with characters.

You can look at past Navigators to see what characters where on different cruises, but they can vary.

If you happen to be going on a Marvel Day at Sea cruise you can also pre-sign up for a Groot meet and greet. Most other Marvel character meet and greets are just line up or walk arounds.

We just booked our 3-day cruise took a gamble on the theory that if they were heavily discounting our cruise (the reason for us booking in the 4-6 window), that probably meant the cruise wasn't very full and we could get reservations for things. There were spots for the Frozen meet and greet on both port days, and Princess meet and greet on Castaway Cay day (though we didn't take the latter as we wanted to hit the beach early). Also lots of BBB makeovers left, including Pirates, which we booked for our kids. We also noticed that if you check periodically, more spots open up now and then for the meet and greets, presumably as people's plans change.

But not just ask Disney if it is important to you? I bet if you call the Disney reservation reps they can look up what activities are available on a given cruise before you book (we have called a couple of times to see if any different times opened up for Frozen since you can't check availability online once you book it).

We often book last minute...and for our October 2017 Marvel cruise we were not able to get the Groot M&G but we were able to get the Frozen M&G.

We could not get Palo brunch or the character breakfast when doing online check in but I was able to get both (I was flexible on what days/time) once onboard. For the character breakfast I had to go Port Adventures desk (on the Magic) and they had a sign up sheet for the breakfast. I was about third down on the list. I was waitlisted for Palo brunch (signed up at the dining changes venue which was Promenade Lounge) and by the next day we had "fish mail" saying we were confirmed for brunch at 9:30 am. They had so many requests for brunch they opened up 30 minutes early at Palo to accommodate more reservations.

them not being available when you book 4-6 weeks ahead doesn't mean you won't get them..
My last 3 cruises I booked 'last minute' Oct 28, booked August 30th, Nov 25 booked Nov 1st and Feb 24 booked end of January.. all 3 times nothing was available at the time of booking.. but I checked every day... the additional slots for the character breakfast opened at a random time for all 3 cruises. Frozen and Princess gathering didn't open at all til I got on the ship in October but opened about a week/6 days before sailing for the other 2 cruises (and still slots while getting on the ship as well)
Sooo, if you are not too picky about what time and day you want it, I wouldn't worry about it...

We were on a 7 night cruise leaving Nov 25 last year, and we were able to book all of our meet and greets and character breakfast 1 week before the sail date. We were a party of 5.
