Changing your reservation at 7 month mark?

We are planning our next trip for May 2010 at BCV. My home resort is AK. Do many of you make a reservation at your home resort first in case you cannot get what you want at the 7 month mark? Then if you do get it cancel the initial reservation?

I hate to wait not get what I want and then not even be able to get my home resort either.

Even when I know I'll want to try to stay elsewhere, I book my home resort first. Sometimes I have changed my mind and decided not to move!

This is exactly what we are planning to do on the advice of our DVC guide. He told me to book at 11 months at BLT (my home resort) and then I can change it (hopefully) at 7 months to BWV. If not at least I know I have a ressie somewhere for our wedding trip!!

We always book our home resort at our 11 month window first, then if we plan on switching we do it at the 7 month window. It has always worked out fine for us. Like the OP said, you may even change you mind and not want to move.
