Changing UY?

I think I know the answer is no, BUT... is it possible to get your UY changed after you have closed already? I didn't know (yes I'm a newbie) you could ask for a different UY than what they were offering. We have a Feb. UY and we take most of our trips at the end of Sept or beginning of Oct.

I'm only worried if we book something for the end of Oct or Dec a few times and something comes up in Oct and we have to cancel, then it's too late to bank them and they would be holding which we would have to use (at a DVC resort-correct?) before Feb of the next year.

Has anyone tried to change their UY?

The only way to change your UY is to sell and buy a different contract.

In this market you might as well be happy with what you have. Selling and buying now would cost a bundle.

No you cannot change your use year absent selling what you have and buying another contract on the resale market with a different use year or buying another 160 point or higher contract from Disney in which case you can request and get a new use year like a new buyer.

And yes, if you cancel a trip and at time of cancellation you are beyond the banking deadline (Sep 30 for a Feb use year), points must be used for a trip by the end of the use year.

It would be like telling your realtor that you wanted the house down the street instead of the one you bought because the kitchen was bigger and could you just trade them. You purchased real estate. Like disneynutz said, you'd have to sell it and buy another instead.

It's not that drastic but DVC CHOOSES not to let you do this. Some points systems will allow you to do this for a fee, others if you purchase additional points. They could easily allow this if they wanted.

TIGGERmetoo - We're in the same position as you...we started with a Feb UY and normally travel in the late Fall. Last summer DVC was selling AKV with a min. buy in at 100 points for a master contract so we jumped at the chance to start a new Aug UY. We sold one of our small contracts to offset some of the costs. This has been an expensive lesson for us.

I think we'll just work with the Feb UY but I'll know better next time if we buy any more points.

if you buy more through Disney, you'll have the same UY (unless you buy a new contact at whatever the number of points needed for a new contract). If you buy resale, then you can look for one with a UY that is you want.

Bear in mind though that if you purchase a resale contract with a different UY, it will be under a different master contract, which means you cannot combine the points for a reservation, except by using your once-a-year transfer. There are lots of people who have contracts with multiple use years and are okay with it, but it can be a hassle, and I'd avoid it if possible. Dance with who brung ya, I say.

I didn't know that if you added points you would keep the same UY when you bought through Disney. Thanks for the info.

TIGGERmetoo,
If you buy a new master contract, you can pick a different UY through Disney. But, that would mean another 160 points (or, 100pts if you could get one of those special AKV contracts)

Incidentally, our first contract (BCV) is a FEB UY, so I know exactly how you feel. We did not know what our vacation patterns were going to be, so our guide just gave us the first available UY. It turns out we rarely vacation in the first 7 months of the FEB UY and more often take vacations in OCT, NOV, DEC and JAN. When we use our FEB UY for NYE, I do worry because it usually involves banking and/or borrowing--so there are a lot of points at stake if something random happens.

Our BWV contract was purchased with a little more thought. It is an OCT UY and was specifically to cover a long weekend during F&W. Most of the time we are booking for an OCT stay--so we have plenty of recovery room if something goes wrong with our plans. :)

Hello all,

A newbie here trying to understand the use year. So, if we primarily vacation to WDW in fall and winter, we want an October use year. If we get the October use year on an initial purchase (either through Disney or resale), doing any add-on through Disney can be designated October, but we'd need to restrict a resale purchase to October use year to be able to combine the points? Also, what villa is GCV - is that the new one that will be built in Hawaii?

Thanks,
Jeff

You seem to have the concept. Oct would work great assuming you didn't vacation any earlier in the fall than 1 Oct. GCV is The Grand Calif at DL.

So if I was to do most of my travel August thru Jan. I would want an August use year?

Thanks, Dean. But why can't you combine points from two contracts with different use year - I don't quite understand that concept? Also, what is the name of the Hawaii DVC resort?

August would be best for that situation but April and June would work fairly well also (no May or July UY). Oct would be bad for that scenario for the trips in August and Sept.

I'm not sure I know the official name for the DVC HI resort (either the hotel or DVC portion). You can combine points for two different resorts at the 7 month window assume they are under the same master contract. If they are two different master contracts, you cannot combine points directly though there are ways to accomplish many of the same needs such as making separate reservations and linking them. If the UY are different, they are by definition unrelated master contracts and for the most part treated like two different owners. You can also transfer points from one to the other USUALLY restricted to one transfer per UY in OR out.

Why would May or July be bad and April and June would be ok?
