I'm trying to understand how everything works before deciding on a DVC resale purchase. I'm stuck on this.... Let's say our home resort is OKW, which is great, but we stay there every time and we would like to try another resort. At 11 months out I book our preferred week at OKW. I check at 7 months out and the entire length of stay is available at AKV. What do I do at this point? Can this even be done? If so, do I call to change it? Can I do this online? If it's not done right do I risk losing my original reservation at OKW?

Adding to that... what if only the last few days of that week are available? Could I spend the first few days at OKW and then have the last few days changed to AKV?

Normally I call when I want to change, because I still find it to be confusing to book online (especially with several contracts). I have changed once online. I did that by canceling my current reservation then I made the new reservation at another resort after that.

I always change online using two browsers. MS are just as likely to lose a reservation on the hone so i prefer to get the extra hour from online

Yes, when you want to change resorts at 7 months, you have the option of canceling and then re-booking online, or waiting the hour and calling MS to do it for you. One thing that I will do is check to see if my current reservation is still available and if it is, then I just cancel and re-book without the need to wait or try the two browser method (that others have tried) or what the hour. I don't typically travel during heavy DVC times and I own at the two places that I want to say all the time, to be honest, I don't do a lot of 7 month switching. I have had really good luck, though, with waitlists, so if what you want is not available, that is always an option as well!

If I have the points available will the online system allow me to have two reservations at the same time?

Is that something I can do online? or since it's not canceling, just modifying, do I have to call to make the change?
If you want to modify a reservation, then you need to call. If you want to book multiple, contiguous reservations, then it's just like making any other reservation online.

I wonder why Disney doesn't look into a solution to this problem.
What's the problem by your definition? From Disney's perspective, I doubt it's a problem. Why should they let you hold two reservations when you only have points for one?

Well a way to modify a reservation then. Not necessarily hold two of them.

If the resort you are trying to switch to is popular and books quickly at the 7 month window, then you need to try to do it online, if you have the points. If you lack sufficient points, you might try to pick off the first few days that you can, then cancel the reservations for those days and then try to book the remainder of your reservation at the next 7 month window. Worst case, you might end up with a split stay, which you may can change by waitlisting. Just throwing out options.
