Chalk

I recently bought a package of chalk but it didn't have any instructions with it. It came with two foam applicators. Can someone tell me how to use the chalk? I love how it looks when applied to die cuts but I'm clueless about where to begin. I thought the chalk would be soft and easy to apply with the applicators, but it is quite hard. Any help would be greatly appreciated,
