Weekly Summary
July 29 - Aug 4

I spent most of my week playing on the beach with the puppy, which most definitely counts as cross training (and exfoliation!). But she loved it and the beach was so much fun that she made great progress on her fear issues.

Sunday - 1 mile warmup + plan 5k time trial
Home again, I did manage to get this done, although I was sore almost immediately! I was trying to beat my previous 5k time of 44:37 and I did, but just barely.

She looks so happy! 🥰

Nice job on the time trial - a negative split and everything! If you were feeling good enough at the end to run your last mile almost a minute faster than your first in those conditions, you definitely would have beaten your previous time by a lot more if it hadn't been so gross out!

Did you do a cool-down jog/walk afterwards? That's surprisingly helpful in preventing some of the soreness. (Not all. But some.)

Thanks! I'm so bad about not wanting to do my cool-downs when it's hot and I just want to be back inside! I did walk home from where I ended my run, but that's only about a third of a mile.

Surprisingly I'm not sore at all today, so maybe it was just a bit of dehydration. I definitely didn't stay on top of hydration (or nutrition) at all last week.

Weekly summary
Aug 5 - 11
This week was not so great. With the tropical storm inbound, my head was responding with its usual free, unwanted, barometric pressure warning system.

Mon - goal: 2.5 miles easy
I put this one off until evening, hoping my head would improve. It didn't, so I just set a time for 45 min and slogged out whatever I could, which ended up being 2 miles with an average pace of 21:06.

Tues and Wed - still had the head pain. Bumped Wednesday's speed work to Thursday

Thursday - goal:1 mile warmup + 2 x 4 min @ I w/ 3 min RI + 2 x 3 min @ I w/ 2 min RI + 0.5 mi CD
2.86 miles
T+D 77 + 76
Debby rolled through and we lost power for a few hours in the morning. I had planned on running in the morning but didn't want to get sweaty without the option to shower (we have a well and when the power goes out we also lose water). But the power was back by noon and we were in between storm bands at that point so I took that opportunity to go out and get this done.

4 min goal was .32 miles and 3 min goal was .24
Feeling pretty proud that I was able to hit these, and I even did my cool down walk at the end! And I can count to two, even when running, so no rocks needed today.

4 min #1 .34
4 min #2 .33
3 min #1 .25
3 min #2 .27

I've decided to start doing a month long core and glute series, so I started that today too.

Friday - goal: Core and glute workout

Saturday - goal: 3.5 miles easy
T+D 77 + 75
3.5 miles in 1:05:07
Avg pace 18:35

Kinda sore from two days of glute/core work. Since I stopped doing Kung Fu those areas are definitely not getting any attention and I may have overdone it a bit. This run was a struggle.

Sunday - goal 3.5 miles at marathon tempo pace (with the option to do 5 miles to make up for missing this run last Sunday).
T + D 77 + 75
2.94 miles in 56:51
avg pace 19:17

The struggle bus pulled up to my front door this morning and I hopped right on. Still a little sore, I didn't sleep well, and my knee wasn't feeling great. I decided to head out anyway and see how much of it would shake off. After 1.5 miles the knee was starting to feel worse and when I noticed I was limping I called it and walked home.

Total miles for the

So I need a plan for next week to assess this knee issue and see if it's going to be a problem that needs Serious Attention. It doesn't hurt at all right now, and it wasn't really painful during the run just really really tight. It's underneath and on the inside of my left knee, so off to Dr Google to see if I can pinpoint what might be tweaked.

I'm going to take off Monday and just do some stretching and maybe some of my PT exercises that I really should be doing. I'll run Tues and Thurs instead of Mon and Wed, which works better for my schedule this week anyway. I'll continue the glute/core work but maybe wear my knee sleeves just in case these exercises are causing the pain. There was quite a bit of kneeling for fire hydrants and so on. I also have a new pair of shoes I've been meaning to swap in so maybe it's time to do that. This sort of approach drives my husband nuts because he'll say I'm changing too many variables at once, and I know he's right but I want to just throw things at a problem until it goes away.

My excitement for the weekend was my younger son finding this friend hiding in the weeds near our trash cans. Super grateful a human found it instead of one of our dogs because we've been down that road before and it was not fun. So I called a snake relocator and she came and put it in a crate and took it to a farm that allows releases and now I'm feeling all magnanimous because we didn't just kill it. While she was here she offered my older son a job after he told her he's spent the past few months leading wildlife summer camps and is pretty comfortable around snakes.

For those not well-versed in venomous snakes, that's a copperhead.

And here's a silly puppy palate cleanser in case you need it after that last photo. The puppy loves boxes!

Such a cute pupper! Check around with your local shelter, REI, state parks department and the like for snake safety dog classes. They safely introduce you and your dog to the sight, sound and behavior of snakes so that you can train their response rather than it be a surprise in the wild. HIGHLY effective and really important!

Thanks! I didn't even know that was a thing! Our 8 lb min pin was bit on the foot by a baby copperhead a few years ago. He survived but it wasn't a fun time.

The snake catcher told me that dogs can smell the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes, unfortunately the venomous ones smell way more interesting, so snake safety for the puppy sounds like it would be a great idea. I'll see if our trainer can recommend a class.

Weekly Summary
Aug 12 - 18

Mon - rest

Tues - Plan: 3.5 miles easy
T+D 72 + 70
3.5 miles in 1:03:59
Avg pace 18:15
New shoes. Knee felt ok, maybe still a little tight but it didn't get worse. I forgot new pairs of Altra Torin 5s demand a blood sacrifice so I ended up with little cuts on my ankle. The part of the tongue where it touches the bend in my foot is always sharp for a few weeks until they soften up. But these are the last 5s I've been able to find and the newer versions look like they have softer tongues.

Wed - rest
Walked the puppy 1 mile. There's a group of ladies (and a few dogs) who walk in my neighborhood on weekday mornings. To help the puppy with her fear issues we've been watching them go by and joining in a little. Today was the first day she was willing to go all the way around the mile loop with them, which is big progress for her!

Thurs - Plan: 1 mile warmup + 8 x 2 min @ I w/ 2 min RI + .5 mile cool down plus core/glutes
Walked the puppy 1 mile as my warmup
T+D 68 + 66
2.27 miles in 40:49 (doesn't include warmup)

My 2 min intervals at I pace should be .16 miles
1 .15
2 .17
3 .16
4 .16
5 .17
6 .17
7 .17
8 .16

Took it a bit easier on the core/glutes workout today and also did some stretching.

Fri - Another mile with the puppy. She's doing great! We start puppy class next week. Time to start working on her leash manners, though. She was so timid before that she was willing to stay right next to me (she barely wanted to walk at all). Now that she's finding her courage walks are more challenging. She's 35 lbs now so it's a full body workout plus maybe some agility. It's fine though, I know how to teach leash manners, and I'm just thrilled that she's feeling more confident.
Also did more core/glutes/stretching

Sat - Plan: 2.5 miles easy
T + D 73 + 70
2.5 miles in 44:32
Avg pace 17:48
Also did some stretching after my run but no core/glutes

Sun - Plan 6 miles @ 40/30 @ 12:30/20:00
My plan has 6 miles at Marathon pace for today but I figured I should do 5 miles first, so that was my goal for today.
T + D 71 + 71
5 miles in 1:23:35
Avg pace 16:43 (T+D adjusted goal pace was 15:34)

1 17:14
2 16:41
3 16:12
4 16:43
5 16:39

Ugh. Not as bad as last week but still not great. Knee felt fine, maybe a little stiff but I started really paying attention to how I was placing that foot and found a strike position that felt better. It wasn't even really that bad weather-wise this morning, I just couldn't hit my goal pace.

I've added in the stretching and glute/core work. I think this week I need to focus on making sure I'm getting enough sleep (I definitely am not) and also eating properly. It's been so hot all summer I really just want to eat fruit and cold things. I've been leaning heavily on protein shakes but I know I'm not hitting my target.

Total miles for the
Week: 17.27 (includes puppy miles)

Pic for the week: The place where she takes puppy classes also has a doggie swimming pool, so she tested out her new life jacket. She loves the water but she's never been in anything deep enough to swim, so I'm being extra careful.

Even before I read the rest of your comments, my first thought was copperhead! It doesn't look full grown either... I thankfully have never come across one, but when I lived in Texas, the local news reported a man found a baby copperhead and thought it was fun to play with it? 15 vials of anti-venom later, I hope he learned his lesson. *Darwin award*

She's so cute!!

I got one for Twink earlier this summer when we took her out for her first kayak ride. She loved looking all around, but tried to get out of the boat a few times and had to be gently prodded back in with the paddle.

She looks like she's having a blast! I can only imagine what would happen if I tried to put Dottie in a kayak. We'd probably end up swimming within minutes.

Weekly Summary - August 19 - 25
This was a good week. The weather cooled off a bit, I'm getting back in the habit of stretching and focusing on hitting my protein goals. I was pretty tired at the beginning of this week, though. Not sure if it was the extra puppy miles I've added or just crappy sleep, but this was improving by the weekend.

Monday - 1.8 miles with the puppy. She's really enjoying walking with our buddies, which is great to see.

Tuesday - plan 3.5 miles easy
3.51 miles in 58.59
T + D 68 + 64

No notes about this one and I don't remember much so I guess it went ok.

Wednesday - 1.46 miles with the puppy

Thursday - plan 1 mile warmup + 2 sets of (4 min I + 4 min rest + 3 min I + min rest + 2 min I + 2 min rest) + 0.5 mile cool down.

Typing out the plan again I am realizing I didn’t do this run correctly! I did 2x4 min, then 2x3 min, then 2x2 min. Oops. Really tired lately. Brain not braining.

Did my warmup mile with the puppy then dropped her back at home.
1.18 mile warmup
2.39 miles
T+D - not needed! False fall is here! It was beautiful outside and any T+D modification would have been minimal so I didn't even check it.

My distance targets were 4 min = .32, 3 min = .24, 2 min = .16
4 - .32
4 - .32
3 - .24
3 - .24
2 - .16
2 - .17

I was feeling great about how these went. Now I wonder how things would have gone if I had done them in the correct order.

Friday - leg day
I actually went! And I didn’t die, and nobody laughed at me and told me I was doing it wrong. I hate that it took me all summer to get over the hesitation, because really the whole thing took an hour, including driving time and warming up. I’m sure I’ll be sore tomorrow but my foot was starting to hurt again and this is what fixed it last time. I really need to keep doing this, at least every other week. Anyone want to harass me about whether or not I went to the gym? I hate going alone, but I also hate disappointing people, so I need an accountability buddy.

Saturday - plan: 3.5 miles easy
3 miles in 59:54

Yep. Really sore. I was supposed to run 3.5 miles in 59 min so I just walked for an hour, then came home and thera gunned my legs again. I know the first time back to the gym is always the worst. More motivation to keep going, I guess.

Sunday - plan 4.5 miles m tempo
4.51 miles in 1:07:53
Another gorgeous morning. T+D adjustment was minimal.

Splits:
1 - 15:45 - the first mile lies
2 - 15:08
3 - 15:13
4 - 14.30
and my last 0.51 was at a 13:59 pace!

Still sore from Friday, so this got off to a rough start but I put on my favorite running music and tried to turn off my brain. I think I get stuck on the idea that this is "marathon" pace and omg that's so many miles and how am I going to do this for 26.2 miles! When, in reality, I *can* run 4 miles at this pace, and that's all I need to do right now. I need to forget the word "marathon" for now and focus on the run in front of me. So much of this is mental.

Came home and took the puppy out for her first hike, so I added another 2.12 miles for the day. My poor legs are done.

Here we are, heading into the last week of my summer plan. I think I’m feeling ok ish about how it went. The speed work days were more fun than I expected. I’m frustrated that I had so much trouble hitting the right pace on my Sunday tempo runs, though, and that makes me nervous for Dopey. Overall, I'm really glad I had this plan to work on this summer and I'm excited to start working on my Dopey training plan in September.

Total miles for the
week - running 13.41
week - puppy 6.56
month - 52.65

She was so excited about the lake, it was really hard to get a good photo. So, even if this isn't the greatest picture, it captures the moment pretty well, I think.

I literally have a gym in my house and still find ways not to do it! I'll harass you if you harass me.

So much of this is mental.
It's ALLLLL mental!

Dopey is still MONTHS away. The important thing is that you stay consistent with your plan until then. You've got this!

Same. I have all of the weights in my basement and still just ignore them.

Thanks! I hope so.

Your version was harder than the originally scheduled. So if these felt great, then you're in a good place.
Ok, that's great news!

Weekly Summary
August 26 - Sept 1

Monday - plan 2.5 miles easy
2.5 miles in 43:27
17:22 avg pace
T + D 73 + 68 which put my modified avg pace goal at 17:42

The heat is returning. :( I knew the cooler weather wasn’t going to last but it’s still a bummer. I caught my 18 year old cranking the a/c down to 64!

Tuesday - off
Walked the puppy 1 mile. Something spooked her and she did not enjoy this walk. :(

Signed up for the Springtime Surprise challenge. I really wish I could carry my heat adaptations through until April. I feel like I could handle the challenge right now, but after months of cooler weather I know that Florida's April heat is going to be rough.

This also means I’m signed up for every RD race so far for 2025. I know people usually track perfect seasons as the RD season that starts with Wine and Dine (or DL Halloween now, I guess). But since the perfect season isn’t an official thing, I think I’ll try for a perfect year instead, and just do everything at 2025 Wine and Dine. Of course this puts even more pressure on me to finish Dopey but the pressure’s there already and I think it’s probably a one and done thing for me so I may as well go for it now.

Wednesday - 1 mile warmup + 3 x 2 min @ I w/2 min RI + 0.5 mile cooldown
2.2 miles
T+D 73 + 70

Much warmer than last week, but I only had three intervals to run so I decided to push it just a little. My goal distance for 2 min at I pace is .16.

1 .17
2 .18
3. 19

Thursday - off
1 mile puppy walk. She was pretty reluctant to go but we made it. Going to talk to the vet about anxiety medication for her because just the behavior modification isn't helping enough and I hate to see her so afraid of everything. She's such a happy puppy inside the house where she feels safe.

Friday -
1 mile puppy walk

Saturday - plan: 2.5 miles easy
2.5 miles in 43:22
Avg pace 17:19
T+D 70 + 70

Sunday - plan - 5k time trial
1 mile warmup
3.11 miles in 43:43

Good morning from Satan’s armpit. At least it was cloudy this morning. Time for my last 5k time trial! I’m pretty happy with things went, although there were no negative splits this time. There was a sweat bee sting right after mile 2, though, and while that did make me run a bit faster at first, the gains didn’t hold. I tried 1:30/30 intervals this time and probably went out a little too fast for how swampy it was out there.

5k trials this summer
7/14 - 44:37 14:11, 14:21, 14:32 T+D 154
8/4 - 44:01 14:30, 14:27, 13:39 T+D 155
9/1 - 43:03 13:42, 13:46, 14:07 T+D 150

Total miles for the
week - running 11:31
walking 3
month - August 66.96
September 4.11
