I was wondering how DVC was going to get folks to purchase points at AKV-Kidani Village when their occupancy date is perhaps almost a year away.

Well we just got back from WDW in Feb so we didn't have plans to go back until next Oct.

I think that's how a lot of people see it--if you tour and decide to buy while on vacation, there's no great urge to go back immediately.

We purchased Saratoga Springs in the fall of 2003 and were contractually unable to stay anywhere until May '04 when the resort opened. It didn't bother me a bit at the time. And a lot of people must have felt the same way because that first phase (four buildings) of SSR was more than 75% sold before it opened.

Going back even further, DVC used to run a discount program called "Magical Beginnings" in which the ONLY way to get a discount off of the list price was to effectively sell your first year's points back to DVC. Buyers would get a discount of $8-10 off per point, but DVC would keep their first year's points and they wouldn't get anything until the start of the next Use Year.

These days DVC (and/or Disney) seems more interested in getting points into people's hands. Either cash guests just aren't booking DVC villas for full price like they used to, or Disney sees a greater benefit in getting the DVC members started on their recurring trips as quickly as possible.

It sounds like just another variation on the Developer's Points, with even more restrictions if they are limiting point use to SSR or II. Hopefully they are offering the full 11 month booking priority with those restrictions.

I'm wondering how this will be managed/administered by DVC. Will it be manually, like developer points were initially handled?

We heard recently from some posters that they now see their developer points on the member web site. I wonder if whatever enhancements DVC made to handle developer points will also handle this new SSR-only flavor of developer points?

Yeah, it sounds like DVC has upgraded its computer systems to handle the Developer's Points better.

Whatever the case, these points should be even easier to administer. All of the Developer's Points given away (both now or in the past) are simply normal DVC points which DVD is holding. In the past they limited members to booking 7 months out so that they didn't have to track the Home resort of the points on a micro level. In other words, they could give you DPs with a SSR Home and me DPs from OKW, but neither of us would get the Home resort booking period.

For this promotion it sounds like they are pulling points exclusively from unsold SSR units and mandating that owners can only book there. Whether they are tracked automatically or manually, limiting owners to one resort and II should be simpler.

That should also help 7-month bookings at other resorts. Since DVC started offering Developer's Points over the last 13-14 months, it seems like members have had consistently more problems booking at the smaller properties. Now the holders of these DPs will only be able to use them at SSR or outside of DVC.

The offer of "a match of our purchase points to be used within 1 yr to be used at SSR or II only and no mf until next year" is interesting.

But why would anyone buy unless they had some points to use? Points that are only good at SSR or II? Hmmm..

I just got off the phone and we are buying into SSR for 160 points. Now we are also looking to get a 40 point addon at AKV-KV for the august use year too. He said the same thing- no usage of those points until 08 and he is looking into it to see if they are available and then I can hopefully buy them

Kidani Unit numbers start at 57. When someone purchasing AKV points gets a unit number of 57 or higher, we need them to report their occupancy date and we'll know that AKV will be open by that date at least.

Hello. Just found this board and just joined DVC on Friday while on Spring Break at WDW. We made AKV our home resort - kind of at the last minute too. Our guide seemed to be pushing (in their non-pushy way ) SSR, and had a good deal. But when we went back to see him on Fri and started asking a few questions about AKV , I guess the new incentives were out. Anyway, we have 250 points, UY June in unit 64A, occupancy date of May 1, 2009.

Our first UY pts will be June '08. We cannot use any of our UY points at any resort or property until that date. But they did match our points with "VPO" (developer?) points. They expire in one year (but we got a 10 day extension), and can only be used at SSR or II, which is what others have been reporting. Also, we can only book 7 months out, not 11. I haven't been too concerned with that because SSR is so big and from what I've read, doesn't sell out. Hope it's not a problem!

Anyway, newbie here, but thought you might like to see that they are selling Kidani units. Right now, I think my only question is, if they finish ahead of schedule, would/could that May 1 date change to an earlier date, and would we be able to book sooner? If they sell units with an earlier occupancy date, that wouldn't affect mine, right?

Gee, I guess that I should have finished reading all of the posts before I posted. Very interesting that you have a May 1 '09 occupancy. I guess that we know now at a minimum, Kidani will be open by May 1.

I mistyped the above - We get points beginning June '08, but cannot use them anywhere until May 1, 2009. You probably realized that, but just to be clear
I guess that's why we got the VPO points; this way we can go to SSR for Spring Break '09.

They may sell units with an earlier occupancy date (they did this in Jambo House) in which case others who purchase later than you will be able to use their AKV points earlier than you.

I asked my guide to try to find out if I have a shot in heck at actually getting Jambo points. He's going to get back to me when he finds out, and then I'll have to decide if I want to go with Kidani points or not.

We are planning a trip down in December and seriously looking at buying DVC. With this current offer would we receive a Dec UY with 2008 points and have one year to date to use matching developer SSR points? We were not planning on returning until summer of 2010 so we would not even be able to use the SSR points. Can you rent out developer points? I also wanted to know if we can rent for cash at AKV for the upcoming trip and after we buy DVC on the first day use our points in exchange for our reservation. We are from Canada and are unable to buy until we arrive at WDW. Help! We have read these boards so much and have been convinced by members like all of you that DVC is the right choice for us. Thanks for all the great info all of you have given us.

At first my guide told me it was a little less than a 50% chance that I would get my April 2007 use year points. Then a week later she told me it would be a one in a million chance of getting them so I told her I would take any use year with 2007 points. That was on about march 17th. On march 20th I got a call about good news. My waitlist came through for April. I got 200 points divided into 3 50 point contracts and 2 25 point contracts. I wanted smaller contracts (I asked for 4 50 point contracts but I had no problem with this). No matter what your guide says, there is a chance. Good Luck

I'm so excited, I can hardly sit still! I checked my point balance online today, and I got my June points! I even got 2007 points! My guide was on vaca this past week. He emailed me yesterday to say he was still checking on the likelihood that I could still get Jambo points. I totally expected a call from him today to say it didn't look good. Already started re-arranging plans to get by with fewer developer points, etc. I normally check the member site several times a day, but in the last week, I've been only checking it once a day. I didn't have points yesterday, so I figured I was wasting my time by checking again today. I just about freaked out when I saw the new contract number. I picked up the phone to call MS immediately, but I had missed them by about 5 minutes. Guess what I'll be doing first thing in the morning.
