OK, so census question time. I'm filling out my form and at the top it clearly says "Do not count anyone who is away at college or serving in the military". Then when you fill in the part about the demographics of each individual there is a check box in case they live elsewhere, i.e. college or the military. Am I the only one who was like, huh?

DS's college sent an email saying do not include them in the census, they will be counted at school.

My guess is they ask that question so that if you accidently put them on the form, they can remove them so they aren't counted twice. Does that make sense?

if they are in the house but normally are somewhere else. You count who is living in the house on april 1st. Lets say your son is home on 30 days leave from march 15th to april 14th. Then he was there on the 1st, but normally is in the barracks. that is when you would fill it out for him and check that box. He will get counted in the barracks.

You are supposed to be counted in the place where you are living on April 1st.

So maybe someone in the military is going to be deployed in June but will still be living at home on April 1 so they should be counted there, but it should be noted that they live someplace else for part of the time.

If they are deployed on April 1 (or away at college on April 1) then they need to be counted there and not at their home.

No, I was like "Huh?" too. I'm wondering about DS. He works on a cruise ship, but of about 1200 crew, only a dozen or so are US Citizens. So the US census may not be a big thing there. I wish the cruise line would say whether we should count him (since this is his legal address). Any ideas?

Good Question, i am going to ask my boss on friday at a crew leader mtg, that is one question that we have not come across. So if you can wait to friday night i will try and get you that answer.

yes, if the member is currently deployed, they are not counted. I had to call and ask. You'd think answering how many people live in your home is an easy question!

So since my DS will be home from college on April 1 for Easter break, I DO put him on our form?

Thank goodness I wasn't the only one!

I didn't count him, then got to that section and panicked thinking I had made a mistake. Then I said, "Oh well, the Govt. made the dang form, and if it's a mistake, it's in how they made the form" and just kept him off it. Hopefully he does get counted at school. If not, I did my part....

Yes, thank you so much.

Answers to the questions. All military deployed are being counted through military records so you do not put them on the form at home.

The cruise ship question was more complicated. Because they and students studying abroad, and some americans working abroad, really dont get counted. We never got to a reall difinative answer although there was a long discussion. I personally would add him on your form if that is he legal address.

Hope this helps

Thanks so much. Especially since he called me yesterday (they docked) and I forgot to ask him. I wouldn't want my poor DS not to get counted, so we'll add him.

Thanks so much everyone for clarifying that for me! I was a little confused, but it is a government form and confusion is the norm... :thumbsup2

my husband is deployed so I only counted my son and I. I did get a little confused though.
