Cellphones via plane rides?

Im a total aim/myspace addict, and am constatly on either or on my sidekick. it has a airplane setting, and i see many people using wireless internet around me on laptops. If not capible of having your phone turned on during the flight, whats the airplane setting mode for, and can I recieve IM's?

You really aren't supposed to be using any phones during your flight. I'm not sure what the 'airplane setting' is for, my cousin has the newest sidekick and it has this setting as well. But you aren't supposed to have it on at any time during your flight.

Yeah, I didnt know, but on my last flight i saw some kinds on cells, and they said as long as they didnt react to the signals they were fine, but still made them remain off during take off and landing

I always thought the airplane mode was a setting so it could recieve a signal so high up. But I have no idea.

You might want to ask a flight attendant if you can use it or not, since it technically is a cell phone, but you aren't using it to call anybody.

Honestly cell phones DO NOT interfere with any signals. So technically you can have them on...but you aren't supposed to. I'm not sure why.

Ok that plane setting turns off all wireless signals PERIOD. no aim, internet, calls, texts. THat means u have 2 turn the phone off while taking off and landing but u can turn it back on(on airplane mode) when they say its safe 2 use portable electronics. They made me turn off my sidekick even after i told them i had it on airplane mode. And plus ive tried there is no way 2 get a signal while on the plane.
