What are your cell phone etiquette pet peeves? What anoys you the most or what behavior have you witnessed that just made you nuts?

My best friend's worst habit is to talk on her cell phone at the table when we are at a restaurant. She's not loud or is disturbing to other tables, but she does ignore the people she is physicaly PRESENT WITH in favour of who ever calls her on the phone (in her defense, she doesn't make calls, just answers them). One time we ate out, she was on the phone the whole time to 3 differant people (and one person twice!). The only time she wasn't on the phone was when she was actually eating her meal. She kept apologizing, saying "it just won't stop ringing today!". I answered "well, you could let them go to voice mail..." She didn't get the hint.

So, what drives you nuts?

People tend to forget their language and who is around them because they are not speaking to those around them. I have a 2 & 4 year old who echo everything they hear...

Those that talk on the phone in public bathrooms.
while using the facilities.

just don't understand that

My sister is either ON the cell or checking her messages obsessively. It irritates the bejeebers out of me because the impression is that whoever she is with is no where near as interesting as who is on the phone.

Unfortunately, this is the sister I don't get a long so hot with so I just bite my tongue.

I was in line at Subway once. The guy ahead of me was gabbering on his phone. It was his turn to order. He made everyone wait till he was done talking. He should have stopped talking long enough to order.

I hate when people talk & drive. I see it all the time. I see people pulling out of their parking spaces and just starting a call. They should stay put, do their call, then drive.

I hate it when people talk on cell phones in restaraunts too. My mom does that all the time. Of course, I have done that once or twice, but that was because my mom called me and if I didn't answer she'd honestly have a heart attack. Mom's calls are usually not urgent, or even important, more of a way of using her time.

HAHAHAHAH My DH likes to call me when he gets home from work (using our landline)...and at the end of his conversation I'll hear the toilet flush.

yeah - didn't need to hear that!

I once yelled at my DH to get out of Jiko at the AKL as he was about to make a phone call from the table during our Sunset Safari meal...he was all mad at me...but I don't care...especially when you are dining with strangers, you don't whip out your cell!

I was behind a woman at McDonald's drive in and she waited to finish her convesation till the guy asked her what she wanted. Like it was a big surprise she was at the speaker. To make matters worse she then started to ask her kids what they wanted to eat!!

The only thing that bothers me is when people are talking on Nextell phones.
1. The voices come out loud on the speaker
2. Every time a person talks there is a loud beeping sound

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

since i have a dh who is "on-call" 24-7, i try to be really tolerant of cell-phone usage, but this one really annoys/embarasses me too!

People that have pointless conversations in the mall. You see it all the time. People just gabbing away incessantly as they're walking by. WHY?! Why go out to a public place to shoot the breeze on the darned phone?

I hate:

people using cell phones in restaurants and then screaming at the phone

people chatting about the history of menstruation on the phone so loud that I know their whole life history

people yakking on the cell phone in the movie theater

people talking on the cell phone while walking and not noticing where they're walking and then bumps into me but says it's my fault

people using cell phones in the bathroom/restroom

people who accept calls then ignores the person right in front of them

people who use speakerphone option of the cell phone and I can hear the life story of the person on the other side

people who drive so slow or erratic because they're yakking on the cell phone

can you tell I hate cellphones? I finally broke down and got one this Feb just for emergencies. Hate hate hate the stuff.

I hate it when people drive and talk, too. I see it constantly on my commute to work. Who could they possibly be talking to at 7 a.m. ????? It almost seems like they actually wait until they're in their car and DRIVING before they make a call.

I also hate it when people are at their children's events (like school concerts, open house, etc.) and answer calls and continue talking. We went on a college tour the other day and the dad was on the phone almost the entire time. I felt bad for his son. What kind of message is this sending?

In NY, we have a law against handheld cell phone use while driving. And they DO enforce it if they catch you. DH got a really big fine when he got caught. (Secretly, I was happy he got caught, because cell phones and driving simply don't mix).

I am so glad you made this thread, I was totally about to make one to complain about my HUGE pet peeve today as well.
I can't stand Nextel phones, especially since the person coming out of the speaker sounds all garbled anyway. I DO NOT care about listening to anyone else's conversation, but just hearing noise is even worse.
But my biggest pet peeve is people who talk on their phone while they are checking out in a store. It is one thing to approach the cashier while on the phone, but I absolutely HATE when a phone rings while in the middle of a transaction, and the person has to answer it. I think that is so rude and disrespectful to me. For a while I just took it, but I finally started standing up for myself. Now, if you get on my line while on your phone, or if you're rude enough to answer it while I'm trying to ask you something, then I'm just going to sit there and wait for you to finish. Take all the time you need, but I am not taking anyone's money until they can treat me like I'm a person too.

Sorry, I just HAD to get that off my chest. I feel so much better now!!

Great thread!!

People who drive in the fast lane on I-4 and are on their cell phone with a line of traffic behind them. I try not to talk and drive but if it has to happen, I make sure I am in the slow lane.

People who don't turn their phone off during Yoga class. Last weekend in class this person's phone rang 3 times. The first 2 times they went out in the hall to talk and the last time they just turned it off, couldn't they just leave it off for an hour.

People who talk loudly on their phone. I was shopping last week and here was this lady sitting in a chair in the middle of the store talking so loud, no matter where you went in the store, you could hear her. Keep it down, no one cares about your conversation.

I went out to dinner with a friend of mine. It was a special "Girl's Night Out". During the meal she called her husband and talked to him, checked her messages, called her mom, and called her brother (we ended up meeting up with him later for drinks). On our way home, she called her husband again and proceeded to tell him all about our evening. We were 10 minutes from her house!!! I was so aggravated!

A couple of weeks ago she came by to see my new baby and her phone rang. She got up to check it, but didn't answer it. I guess I was slightly more important than that person.

before people assume that people are always on the phone for no reason, think of this. There are people, like me who are on call 24/7 and get calls on my cell phone regardless of where I am, or who I am with.

My calls are coming from highschool/college age kids who are lifeguards, or general recreation center staff members, they are calling me usually for clarification, possibly questions that they ar not comfortable answering on their own. Maybe the chlorine pump, that they know they can always hear clicking, isnt....maybe they have an irate parent who is livid because we close the pool for 1/2 hour when we see lightening....

Last year I was out to dinner with DH, DD's, and DH's entire family- (23 of us total) and I received a call about an assault on Rec property, that involved a BB Gun, I spent the entire dinner on the phone with staff, parents, police, my boss etc.... yes, for the most part, I was outside, or in the entrance to the restaurant, but for the initial call, and a few other later ones, I was inside sitting at my table. Had your child been at the center, I'm sure you'd have been thankful that I did not let the call go to voice mail, or ignore the callers.

There are times when I wish I didnt have to answer the phone, WDW in april was one...however, when I'm in line for TOT, and the phone rings, you bet your butt I'm gonna answer it.

So not all calls are meaningless, and not all people on the receiving end are rude, and thoughtless people...some of us are looking out for your children!
