Individualism is one thing... the length of a child's hair is the decision of the PARENT!!!!

So what's wrong then, with a parent who decides to respect their children's wishes with regard to the length of their hair (or the shoes that they wear, etc.)?

The way I see it, it's not my hair, so if my DD wants her hair a certain length, or a certain color, then I say she can go for it. If I sanction it as her parent, then isn't it still my decision?

And also, what exactly is wrong with looking like a girl? I mean, honestly, what is so bad about it? Is there something wrong with being a girl? Do people think that he will be more likely to grow up to be *gasp* gay or trans gendered?

Why not? It's his hair. I don't see any problem with it, if he likes it. I've never understood why everyone feels the need to make sure that kids fall into very strict gender guidelines. If a girl wants to play with trucks, why not? If a boy wants to paint his nails, why not?

I agree. Its no different from my daughter telling me she wants her hair to grow rather than have it cut shorter like I was doing. Once she hit 6 she wanted her hair long. Its her hair so she certainly should have a say in how she wants it.

Are you sure that's a picture of her with her son and not her neice who passed away? Her son is only six, and that child looks at least 10 or 11. Are there other photos inside?

I do not like it, but this is their choice. I wonder if this is what she wants or what he likes. I love to listen to her sing though!

In defense of the child's "long curly hair", that is EXACTLY what my DS19's hair looked like when he was only 10 months old!!!! As it grew down past his neck it started to form the most beautiful golden ringlets, blonde highlights and all. I cut his hair after a few people thought he looked like a girl though. LOL But I have to say, I've ALWAYS WONDERED what my DS19's hair would look like, had he been a girl and grown it out, and NOW I KNOW. It's gorgeous!

However, in MY social environment, it's not really appropriate for my DSs to have long hair. I know that in other cultures, boys with long hair is fine, so maybe this child does not stand out as much as we might think he does??

P.S. I agree with whoever said the child in the picture looks older than 6, but then again, you never know.

I don't see what the big deal is. One of my seven-year-old daughter's friends is a little boy who is half Navaho and half some other tribe I can't recall. His parents have let him decide and he has chosen to wear his hair long although his dad has short hair. He says that the girls like it. I know my daughter does!

Also, you have to remember that this, like most posed celebrity photographs (not the paparazzi pics), is a staged and styled photo. Someone fluffed, powdered, and probably provided clothes for both of them. Yes, the kid has long hair. Who cares???

For the record, I find nothing wrong with her allowing him to have his hair long if he wants it like that. If HE didn't want it that long and she wouldn't allow him to cut it, then that'd be a different story. He looks pretty happy in this picture.... lol

My nephew had a male classmate with long hair like that and no one in the class teased him.
