Celebrating good news--without food!

Hi!
I had a great day today, which made me think about this:
For my entire life, every good thing that has happened to me, and every goal that I have acheived, I have celebrated it with food. Up until I turned 25, this was no problem, but the weight started creeping on after that!

I was just thinking about this recently, as we have some celebrations of various types coming up--holidays, our daughters first birthday, etc, and I realised for the first time that it doesn't do me a whole lot of good to "celebrate" by going off my diet! (And for me, carb addict supreme, it is never for "just one day"!) One stray usually knocks me off course for a week, two weeks, or more, so I was feeling a little wary about the good things that are coming up!

Anyway, fast foward to today, I was in the bookstore--one of the biggies with a coffee bar, bakery, etc. I went to look at the craft section, like I always do, and was amazed to see my book prominently displayed on the shelf. It wasnt supposed to be out until July, so this was a shock! After recovering from the surprise (and calling eveyone I know on my cell phone!) I headed right to the bakery to celebrate. You know, "I'll just have a latte with splenda", which would turn into 3 chocolate covered pretzels and a cookie once I was at the counter.

So I thought about it, realized how I "always" celebrate just doesnt work for me. I also thought about that 5lb clippie, which I am onlly 1lb away from, and, suddenly the treat didn't seem so great. I got out of line, rewarded myself with a few new magazines, and went home a happy camper, still on track!

ANyway, this was a big turning point for me in the way I think, and I know the support (and accountablilty) I have here really helps!

Thanks to you all!

Samantha, having a happy day today!:bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Let me be the first to give you the thumbs up on your choice.

I am very much like you. I eat to celebrate, I eat when I want comfort, I eat when...well you get the idea.

Most of the time it's because I don't step back and think. You DID! And that's something to be proud of!

Now go out there and celebrate your achievement -- but with something non-food. Buy that magazine or book. I'd say treat yourself to a manicure or pedicure, but don't know if that would go over big! ;)

Celebrate! You did a good thing!

You just brought back a memory.

When I was on WW (8 years ago), I was very close to getting my 30 lb. star. When I weighed in I was only .25 lbs away, so I said, don't write that down, I am going to go pee first. Well I peed and got my star. How is this relevant? Well, when I got that star my DH was taking me to St. Louis to the Spaghetti Factory for dinner as a celebration!

I am now 4 days into Atkins and determined to get this weight off.

Congratulations on your success (mental and weight).

Did you say you had a book published? How exciting. What kind of book?

I love to read and would be interested. Send me a PM if you don't want to post it on the board.

MontyMontyMOnty Okay, I'm back in my room and I'm peeking at WISH, so sue me ;)

You had a craft book published? How exciting! You must send me a pm and tell me the name so that I can buy one. I must have you sign it for me too! How neat :teeth:

I'm really proud of you, I have always used food as a celebration. Atkins is easy to use for celebratory meals, at least for me, I hope it works well for you too.

I'm just so proud of you for realizing this pattern and taking steps to break it, that is the way to goal, my friend. You are on your way now, for sure!

Samantha,
You've just made a lightbulb go off in my head:eek: . I have the same problem. I never realized how pretty much every holiday, party or even weekend activity included eating. Especially eating as a reward. I'm really proud of you :p for passing up that latte! It does feel good afterwards!

Thanks so much for the support and replies! I got myself a whole mess of craft and home dec magazines, and have gotten far more enjoyment out of them than a goodie--and much less guilt!

The book is a craft/home dec title about making projects from old textiles like quilts, handkercheifs and embroidered items. It is my first "bookstore" book, up until now, I have only done craft leaflets (the kind you buy in a craft store), and magazines.

Happy weekend to all!
Samantha
