Celebrate Everyday! Sept 2009 *updated May 23* Day 5: MK Resort Hopping

Apologies for not writing for a long time, I plan to get this finished pretty soon so I might make a lot of posts this week. With the snow keeping us inside at weekends and after work I really have no excuse!

Day Two
Today was our first Disney park day. The alarm was set for 6:30am and we found we had already adjusted quite well to the time difference. We were down for breakfast by 7am, finished with breakfast in 30 minutes and were waiting outside for the 7:45am bus to the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC) near the Magic Kingdom. We had no idea what the shuttle bus would look like, luckily it wasn't late and the driver shouted the destination as he got off, so we knew we were safe. The bus headed south and made a couple more pick ups from other hotel, in all it took about 20 minutes from our hotel to the TTC. We took some instructions from the driver on how to get to the other Disney parks, we were heading to Animal Kingdom for our first Disney day!

We took the Disney Transport Bus from the TTC to Animal Kingdom, the sun was already pretty hot and it was quite a hazy morning - I couldn't get a good shot of the entrance sign.

100_1625.jpg

We had a voucher to collect our 14-day Ultimate ticket from the Will Call window. The lady in the booth asked us if it was our first time, we said it was for James but no 'First Visit' badge was given to us. The lady gave us out tickets, maps and times guides for all four parks and we joined the line to enter AK. I was glad the bus got us there in time for opening, the turnstiles opened at about 8:45am. We jumped out of the crowd and into Guest Relations when we entered the park and picked up a 'First Visit' badge for James, seeing as the Will Call lady hadn't given us one. I wished I could wear one too, but that would be lying! I later got a 'I'm Celebrating' badge so I didn't feel left out.

100_1670.jpg

The crowd all walked through the park until the Tree of Life was right in front of us. By the time we got to that point some kind of show was already going on with Goofy and Minnie on a bus - Mickey appeared in the distance by the Tree of Life and we counted down to the 9am opening. The crowds kind of split as some headed for Expedition Everest and others, us included, went for the Kilimanjaro Safaris.

100_1629.jpg

As we walked towards Africa, Mickey appeared after his opening show and walked right in front of us! He's so funny, how he walks - he kind of swaggers and drags his feet! It's adorable. It was James' first encounter with a character and what a memorable one! I suspect Mickey was dying for a big piece of cheese after his already busy morning - we knew we'd see him again later, so we carried on our way.

100_1631.jpg

We walked through the elaborate queue area of Kilimanjaro Safaris and waited in line for roughly 20 minutes, not a bad wait time when you consider the majority of people in the park are all in the same place! As we waited I wondered if the ride and storyline of the safari was still the same, it had a been a good 7 years since I'd last been on the safar, surely something must've changed.

"See you in two weeks!" Nope, the story was still the same!

100_1634.jpg

100_1635.jpg

100_1639.jpg

We walked through the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail after the safari. It was already getting pretty hot in the sunshine, so the cool, covered trail was welcomed.

After the safari and the trail we had time for a few pictures with some characters! Our first character meet of the trip was with Pooh, Eeyore and Tigger. I remember feeling slightly nervous and shaky at the thought of meeting the characters, not because I was scared but because I was excited and this is one of the best things about Disney!

100_1666.jpg

100_1667.jpg

100_1668.jpg

After we said 'bye to Tigger we headed onto wait in line for the 10:30am show of 'Finding Nemo: The Musical' in Dinoland. We ended up sitting quite near the front of stage and druing the show the performers walk and dance all around you. The show was brilliant and a definite must-see!

We planned our next show to be 'The Festival of the Lion King' in Camp Minnie-Mickey at 12pm. On our walk back we saw a character meet with Goofy and Pluto, the line was short and moving quickly so we jumped in for a photo.

100_1682.jpg

I always remembered the queue area for 'The Festival of the Lion King' to be hot, sweaty and really uncomfortable, but it looked like they had made some changes to make it better with water-spray-fans and more foliage to give more shaded areas. The theatre was already filling up when we arrived, we headed to the seating area furthest away from the entrance. I didn't remember the theatre being completely indoors when I last saw the show, the whole place is now air conditioned instead of using only ceiling fans to keep the audience cool. Each seating area as allocated an animal, that animal's noise and a performer in the show - our area was the Lions! The performers enter from the four corners of the theatre and perform in a circle stage between the seating areas. Simba's float entered the theatre on our right hand side and Pumbaa came in on the left, near the exit. The show was just as magical as I remember it, it's something I could watch over and over again!

100_1695.jpg

After the show we headed towards Restaurantosaurus in Dinoland for some lunch and on our way we found Lilo and Stitch!

100_1700.jpg

Stitch is my favourite! And it was such a bonus to get Lilo with him as well, I was very pleased!

After lunch we went back to Camp Minnie-Mickey for more character meets with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald who were all dressed up in their safari outfits!

100_1702.jpg

100_1704.jpg

100_1705.jpg

We found time for some photos in front of the Tree of Life, thanks to the Photopass photographer who had just got through with a very tired child and impatient parents! We just wanted a few quick snaps together and then we were off to 'It's Tough To Be A Bug'.

100_1707.jpg

I'd never been to the Bug show on my last visit to AK, Mum and I had seen that it involved some simulated bug presence on the warning sign and we quickly left the queue area before it was too late! But I decided that I had to give it a go, I'd researched the show and probably ruined the whole thing before our trip and kept my feet off the ground the whole time! lol.

We hadn't visited Asia yet and I quite fancied a go on Kali River Rapids since I was feeling brave after my experience in the Bug show! lol. The rapids weren't that bad, we didn't get very wet which is a shame really because the sun was really hot by that time! After the rapids we found a shaded spot for the parade outside the closed Flights of Wonder attraction. The parade began at 3:45pm and because we were so near the end of the route it was gone 4pm by the time it reached us.

100_1731.jpg

100_1733.jpg

Park closing time was due at 5pm, so we headed to the exit after the parade had passed by. I think a lot of people had the same idea. We stopped off in a couple of gift shops, didn't buy much really just a safari Mickey antennae topper and an Animal Kingdom pin.

100_3542.jpg

Lots of people were already waiting in line for buses back to resort hotels, we needed to get a bus back to the TTC so we could catch our free shuttle back to I-Drive. We seemed to be waiting ages before we heard about a security incident that involves the entire Disney Transport system! No buses we carrying guests until they had been inspected at the main depot. We waited some more until buses finally started to arrive and take guests back to resort hotels. Our bus still didn't come, everytime a bus came into view we hoped and then were disappointed.

100_1737.jpg

A friendly senior cast member on a Segway came over and was talking to a group of guests in our line, he explained that no buses were entering the Magic Kingdom resort area. We could go to EPCOT and get the monorail to MK if we wished, or simply wait for the TTC bus. Many went to EPCOT, but we had already missed our shuttle back to I-Drive. The Animal Kingdom extended it's opening hours and were letting guests back into the park until the bus service returned to normal. We didn't really know what to do, we'd been at Disney since about 8am and wanted to get back - it was almost 6pm. We had $40-ish in our wallet and chose to spend it all on a taxi ride back - it was an unfortunate one-off event. We had a really pleasent ride back with a female taxi driver, she told us how her son went the FU and she was a Gator-Mom - it was very sweet.

I don't know what time we got back to our room, but it was later than we'd hoped. At this point we still had no idea what had happened with the buses, so put on local news. Apparently, there was a mysterious box attached to the underside of one of the buses, it was later identified as a GPS tracking box which had been fitted to some buses a few years back and engineers had not recognised it before. That little black box cost us $40 and made us very stressed!

We had dinner at TGI Friday's on I-Drive and retired to bed quite late.

Day Three:
Disney's Hollywood Studios
coming soon!

A great day at AK - looks liked you enjoyed the character meets :)

Shame about the wait to get back - but better to be safe:thumbsup2

We found that our routine of up at 6:30am, breakfast at 7am and then wait for the bus at 7:30am was good and used that on our second Disney day for a visit to Disney's Hollywood Studios (DHS). I tried waffles for breakfast this time and they were amazing with syrup and chocolate chips - from then on waffles and fruit loops were what I had for breakfast! Amazing.

After breakfast we waited outside for our bus to the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC) at the Magic Kingdom and then caught the Disney Transportation buses to DHS.

1001741.jpg

We joined the lines and picked up some park maps and show schedules then walked with everyone down Hollywood Boulevard for the 'opening ceremony' show for this park. On previous visits with my parents we'd never got to the parks early enough to actually know there were rituals, shows and countdowns before the parks opened. I couldn't see very much of the show, but no Disney characters were involved anyway so I didn't mind. We were in the crowds about half way down Hollywood Boulevard where Echo Lake is visible to the left through a gap between the shops.

1001745t.jpg

While waiting for the park to 'officially' open we used the park map and schedule to plan the first few moments of the day. I'd always intended for us to trek straight towards Toy Story Mania (TSM) because I'd heard how popular the ride was - I had a few rides in mind at certain parks that had to be done as soon as the park opened, otherwise you'd waste so much time waiting in line and miss out on other things. I tried to plan a route to TSM that didn't involve keeping to the right with the masses headed for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Rock'n'Roller Coaster - so we chose to go left and head down Streets of America.

1001751n.jpg

My plan turned out to be the long way round to TSM, but I don't think we missed out that badly! We just joined a crowd which turned out to be the line for TSM that had extended out of the attraction. The lines for the Fast Pass machines were just as bad as the ride, this was everyone's must do for the morning. I'm glad we went there first! It took about 20 minutes from the attraction entrance to boarding the ride and that's only because the queuing area is so long and elaborate. I was given a lanyard with a card on it that is used to measure the wait times from entrance to boarding.

1001753s.jpg

After TSM we had a bit of time to wander over to the Animation Courtyard where one of my favourite places is. The Magic of Disney Animation didn't open until 10am so we went back through to the centre of the park where the giant Sorcerer's Hat is - it's become the new symbol of the park but it used to be the Earful Tower. The High School Musical 3 (HSM3) show was due to start at 10am and Cast Members were already marking out space with ropes and cones so we decided to grab a drink and stake out a good space for the show. The HSM3 show begins as a parade from the park entrance down Hollywood Boulevard and then stops in front of the Sorcerer's Hat.

1001768.jpg

1001770q.jpg

When HSM3 was over we went back to the Animation Courtyard and into the Magic of Disney Animation where we met Mickey!

1001785o.jpg

From there we walked through into the Animation Shop where they sell framed animation cells and other movie memorabilia. I wanted to buy so much!

1001794z.jpg

We walked over to take our seats for the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at 11:30am. I was amazed that this show has not changed one bit since the last time I'd seen it. It's still impressive though.

1001824b.jpg

After that we had some lunch at the Backlot Express - just hot dog and fries - and then went to the Muppets 3D show.

1001829n.jpg

The Beauty and The Beast show was starting at 2pm so we went to the theatre early to make sure we got some good seats. I loved the show, I love the movie!

1001858y.jpg

I'd riden the Tower of Terror in 2002 when I was at Disney for Christmas with my parents. I thought I might be brave enough to do it again, but seeing it and hearing the screams made me really not want to do it. The lines were so long, the anticipation of waiting would have killed me. I have my memories of that ride, I didn't need anymore - James wasn't too bothered about it either. So, while in the area we took some pictures.

1001866.jpg

1001865f.jpg

1001868.jpg

The day's parade was due to start at 3pm, so it was time to stake out a spot for that. I didn't really know where the best place to be was and all the good, shaded areas had already gone. We settled in view of the Sorcerer's Hat and waited for the Pixar Block Party Bash to come around.

1001874y.jpg

The Block Party Bash wasn't really a parade, it was a party that took place on one half of the route and then moved on to the second half for the same. We were at the start of the second half so could see some of the first party happening while we waited for it to come around to us. The Monster's INC section stopped right in front of us and little Boo was adorable.

1001891.jpg

1001916z.jpg

There was another popular show coming up at 4:30pm which we didn't want to miss because it was the last show of the day - Lights, Motors, Action - Extreme Stunt Show. The show lasted about half an hour and included stunts with cars and bikes, jet skis, fire and water. It was great - my Dad and brother would have loved to see this, but it wasn't on when we'd visited in 2002. It was set in a theatre so large that you could call it a stadium - it was huge and so high up. The views were amazing!

1001936j.jpg

1001940h.jpg

Exiting the show took a long time, the crowds were huge. We headed for the Backlot Tour, but so did some others although it didn't make our wait too long - the Backlot Tour is pretty fast loading and continuous. The Backlot Tour had changed a lot since my last visit, but still had the faithful parts like Catastrophe Canyon.

1002004g.jpg

It was getting on time to leave the park and head for the buses, we wanted to catch the bus back to our hotel from the TTC but had to get back from DHS first. But there was just time for one more picture in front of the Sorcerer's Hat.

1002010x.jpg

We got back to the TTC in time to catch our bus back, but then found that the 7:55pm bus from the TTC then went on to pick up from DHS at 8:20pm - we could've had more time in DHS if we'd known. Never mind, we soon got used to the buses - it was only day three afterall!

I booked our character breakfast at Disney's Beach Club Resort in June 2009 when the ability to make reservations was first introduced online. It was so easy to do and you could include an event you will be celebrating on that day, so I entered our anniversary for 7 years into the online form - I had heard that you get special things for celebrating!

Our reservation was timed for 8am, so the night before we booked a taxi using the hotel's front desk so that we'd be picked up at 7am. The early morning was fine, we'd be up and down for breakfast by 7am anyway. The taxi was a lovely Lincoln car, at first we weren't sure if it was for us because it was so nice and not your typical taxi. We made it to The Beach Club Resort just after 7:30am and checked in for our reservation, we ended up being seated before our 8am slot which was great.

1002040e.jpg

1002035u.jpg

We got seated and brought everything we needed, our server was great - I think her name was Delores. My food consisted of Mickey waffles, croissants, fruit loops, bacon & eggs, juice - it was amazing. We were brought a special gift because we were celebrating! A cake and card, signed by Donald, Goofy and Minnie.

1002031t.jpg

1002027r.jpg

1002021g.jpg

The characters came round more than once for pictures, autographs and giggles. Donald made me jump while I was eating my food, he snuck up behind me and made a popping sound with his lips to sound like quacking - James saw it all happening and it turned into one of those great moments we'll always remember. Our server, Delores, took photos for us when the characters came around - it didn't seem to matter that we were two single adults they knew we wanted a great experience.

1002029.jpg

1002022m.jpg

After breakfast we had a wander around the resort, I'd never stayed in a Disney resort when I'd visited WDW with my parents so I was really looking forward to having a look around The Beach Club and other resorts.

1002037f.jpg

We took a Disney Transportation bus from the resort to Downtown Disney for some shopping in the village and some fun in DisneyQuest!

Day Four:
Downtown Disney & DisneyQuest
coming soon!

Because we'd had breakfast at The Beach Club we could get a Disney Transportation bus directly to Downtown Disney (DTD) for a day of shopping and DisneyQuest. We ended up getting to DTD before the shops were open, so we had a wander and looked into the windows and took some pictures.

1002052.jpg

1002048.jpg

When the shops did open the first one we went into was Disney's Days of Christmas, which was full of ornaments and decorations - there was even someone decorating and customising baubles.

1002063q.jpg

1002054l.jpg

I wanted to get some ornaments for our own Christmas tree and get some gifts for our parents which we could put away and give as Christmas presents in December.

From there we went into The Art of Disney where we saw artists drawing Disney characters - we later bought two of these drawings, a Stitch one off the rack and Donald & Daisy one which we had commissioned towards the end of our holiday when we knew we could afford it.

1002049.jpg

1002071c.jpg

Goofy's Candy Co was an amazing place, but we didn't buy anything!

1002076y.jpg

1002073.jpg

I was very excited about Pin Traders - pin paradise! I could've bought so much, but I had to be selective!

1002082.jpg

1002080.jpg

There were so many other great shops, my other faves were World of Disney and Tren-D.

1002095d.jpg

1002078m.jpg

After we'd been round all the shops we took a boat from the Marketplace side of DTD to the Westside, where DisneyQuest was.

1002101f.jpg

1002100e.jpg

James enjoyed the Ride the Comix while I took photos of him.

1002116q.jpg

1002112z.jpg

After a few hours roaming and having lunch in DisneyQuest we headed back to the TTC at Magic Kingdom to get a bus back to our hotel.

Later in the evening we took the I-Ride Trolley down to the Premium Outlets for dinner and some more shopping!

Day Five:
Grand Floridian and Contemporary Resorts
coming soon!

The Fantasmic show at Disney's Hollywood Studios (DHS) was on when we were there on day three but we decided to give it and DHS another day.

We had our first lie-in of our holiday and had a late breakfast. We got the lunchtime bus from our hotel to EPCOT and then transferred to the TTC at Magic Kingdom on a monorail. We had no rush to get to DHS we decided to hop on the monorail to the Grand Floridaian Resort for a look around and to take some pictures.

1002129.jpg

1002127j.jpg

1002125.jpg

There was a lunchtime character meal going on with the princesses which was cute!

1002128x.jpg

We found our way out onto the beaches which have amazing sand - James had to have a feel.

1002137n.jpg

1002133.jpg

1002131.jpg

1002130.jpg

Across the lake the Wedding Pavillion looked so beautiful as well.

1002136.jpg

From the Grand Floridian we got on the monorail that goes to the Magic Kingdom and then into the Contemporary Resort - this was always my favourite resort because I was amazed that the monorail went through the building!

1002145.jpg

1002142f.jpg

We had a look at Chef Mickey's inside the Contemporary and the Fantasia gift shop, watched a couple of monorails pass through. Then we headed outside to the bus stop and got some more great pictures, especially one of the new Bake Lake Tower (BLT) hotel.

1002155ge.jpg

1002154b.jpg

1002153t.jpg

We waited at the resort's bus stop for a while to get a bus to DHS, but then decided it was quicker to get the monorail back to the TTC and get a bus from there to DHS, so we went back inside for some more pictures as well.

1002159a.jpg

1002157x.jpg

I got a couple of great photos from the window of the monorail as we headed back to the TTC.

1002161c.jpg

1002160jb.jpg

From the TTC we got the bus to DHS.

Day Five:
Disney's Hollywood Studios & Fantasmic
coming soon!

Really enjoying this TR! I find the puffins cute too, I wonder if they do cuddly versions of them? Hmmmmm...

Great pics btw!
