Ceiling fans being removed from the Poly!!!

Saves them $$$ as well.

Actually, removal of the ceiling fans COSTS more money. As anyone who lives in a hot climate knows, using a ceiling fan makes you feel cooler, so there isn't the necessity to crank up the air conditioning as much. No ceiling fan=greater air conditioning costs. And air conditioning costs way more than the electricity cost of a ceiling fan.

You know that does sound like a good point. Maybe that is one of the reasons they are trying to place controls on the temp of the A/C as well.

But they have the thermostats all programmed to keep the AC costs down

I think the fans were a maintenance expense and someone said, let's cut that

Ceiling fans are pretty outdated, design-wise IMO.
This sounds like more of an update to me - and one less thing to break/clean.
Yup! ::yes::
Ceiling fans are considered outdated. If you watch any design shows 99% of the time if there is a existing ceiling fan they take it out.
I bet part of it is that they are huge dust collectors.
YES!!!!!!! ::yes:: They are a huge eye-sore and very outdated, design-wise. Rarely do I see a design show actually install a fan. They always take them out. But I suppose I can see the appeal in its function, esp if youre in a hot climate. Although me personally i've never found them useful. Im glad they're getting rid of them. I wont miss 'em. :teeth:

On an aside, I've never had a room go warm because of the AC unit shutting off due to lack of motion. Believe me I'd know, as I sleep hot and set the room very cool, and would wake up if the room got too warm.

I have never had a problem with the room going cool enough either. I have shared a room with my nephew many times, and he likes it arctic cold. I kid you not, one trip I was sleeping in my hoodie, that is how cold the room was at night. We have stayed together at CSR, POR, and ASsp, and he always was able to get the room very cold.

Seriously? We are suppose to let a design show dictate how we live?

I have a home in South Florida and keep my ac and fans on. The fan circulates the air in the room and makes you feel cooler.

Fans aren't cool... :duck:

Keep mine running all day every day. Otherwise I will burn my compressor out.

Did I say that? People always want the rooms updated and looking fresh. So it is very possible Disney hired someone who didn't like the look of the ceiling fans. Or could be Disney decided it was too time consuming for housekeeping to dust them all the time so they wanted them gone.

I hope we don't have a coolness issue at Poly in 3 weeks when we go! Last year we kept fighting with the thermostat at OKW - the heat index was 105 a few of the days we were there. The ac and the fan were DEFINITELY needed and appreciated. Now people who like the fan for the white noise will be leaving tvs on low to compensate - more electricity, more costs!

I bring a small fan from home. Otherwise an Ap on my cell phone works in a pinch.

Will be interesting to see.

So, I get the climate argument, but do you really need a fan to move air around a hotel room? A house I can see. But a hotel room is a relatively small and open space- heats up and cools down fairly quickly as long as the systems work properly.

That's the problem the systems don't let you set it to the temp you want. That's where the fan comes in handy

The phasing out of the fans is a pretty disappointing development, at least for my family. For some the fan may not seem like a necessity, but for our trip last week at POR the inability to actually keep the room cool while we were gone because of the AC made the fan hugely important. Especially since we were a family of 5 adults in 1 room for the week, things tended to be hot and the fan definitely helped bring the temp down faster.

The fact that this would be the case in resorts where you're paying far more $$ (and are still having a fun war with the AC ;)) and one couldn't even have the use of a fan is.. well, sort of ridiculous, IMO. :confused3

I can believe the Universal hotel starts at $114 but I bet that isn't its actual price very often.

What are bed runners?

I really do think the fans' removal is down to housekeeping. Hotels really don't like fans. They break too easily and they are really obnoxious to keep clean.

they also doesn't scream "modern" to anyone, and I would guess most people who are not from Florida are not running those ones in the deluxe rooms.

The only person I know who insists on using them uses them for white noise. I mean, she sleeps hot too, but I sleep hot and certainly don't need them if there's a/c. I've stayed at hotels with sensor a/c before and generally it's fine. It stays cool when it's dark and you're not moving around. I've also stayed places with fan and no a/c , and that's usually fine as well. But both simultaneously is overkill even in Florida.
Bed runners are the fabric they have (or had) across the end of the bed. Some call them bed scarfs. I don't know the correct term for them.

I'm a person not from Florida and always used the fan along with AC. I guess it's a personal pref. It alows me to have a warmer Ac setting. We have a ceiling fan at home in our bedroom. Love it. I don't find them hard to keep clean. I have a telescopic handle swiffer duster.
Seriously! Almost any national chain had these basic offerings.

We travel a lot. I have stayed in resorts all over the US, Caribbean and Mexico. I mention this to frame my perspective as a non-Disney traveler. Our first park trip was to Disney, stayed at the Poly. Our second park trip was to Universal, stayed at Portofino Bay. Both rooms were club level. My thoughts on the bolded question above -

Disney resorts at not designed or managed to generate non-room revenue the way normal resorts operate. Disney's focus on quick service (thin profit margins) food options and ADRs that limit sit-down dining options mean they need to have higher room rates to make the overall numbers work.

At Loews and any other real resort or full service hotel has food and beverage options that are huge profit centers, typically at least one real sit-down restaurant as well as a pool bar/grill. And management makes it very easy to spend money at such places with chair-side attendants happy to serve you a food and drink at the pool, dining reservations requests always granted or at least helpful staff willing to make alternative arrangements and recommendations.

I don't mean to judge one over the other, they are two completely different business models and need to be priced as such.
Portofino is amazing!! We had a deluxe room overlooking lagoon in West Wing with balcony on top floor. Loved it.

But Poly and other WDW resorts have multiple sit down restaurants and quick service as well as pool bars. There were pool attendants at my stays at GF & Yc/BC, and our last Poly stay had them, just started trying it out I think. GF has 5 sit down restaurants along with a quick service and pool grill. So not sure I understand?

Does anyone know why they got rid of the bed runners?

From pictures, the way they have it now looks like they forgot to finish making up the bed....

Too many guests were taking them, and the decorative pillows, home as souvenirs.

They can take away levels and add towels and coffee makers, but still doesn't make a value any closer to a deluxe, and, giving the values a coffee maker, fridge and pool towels just brings them up to what any motel 6 would have.

I read the explanation about doing away with value, moderate, Deluxe - will not tie values to value pricing, mods with that pricing, but-- values have many times, most times have different pricing. Mermaid room, Pop and Allstars usually have different prices, even within Allstars price differs. The mods don't have same pricing. And the deluxe never had same pricing.

I guess I'm just getting annoyed with Disney taking away amenities like fans, bed runners, but still gouging you with continually higher prices.
I just saw an add for a new Universal Value resort, Aventura. 3 pools, hot tub, water slide, 314 sq ft rooms with floor to ceiling windows and inside halls for $114. Why does Universal manage to keep prices reasonable and Disney feel the need to gouge us?

So sad about taking out fans. We always use it. I hate cold AC rooms, so I can set AC to 70, run fan and be comfortable. It also helps keep electric costs down. It's also part of the South Pacific theming.

It's maybe just me, but It makes me sad about how they are taking all the special touches out of the rooms and making them more homogenized in theming. I loved all the small touches in the rooms. The Mickey desk lamps, the ones at YC & BC were so cute. Now could be a lamp at any Hotel. :guilty:
Don't forget about the rooftop bar at Aventura. :D
