Cedar Point Lodging

Where do you stay when you go to Cedar Point.

We are taking a VERY last minute trip to Cedar Point, and while it's not too far to drive home from, we'd like to spend the night there.

EVERY SINGLE ONE of the on-property hotels are booked solid.

Nothing else in the general area that I have found online looks even halfway decent... I travel and am in a hotel room 300 days out of the year, so I am VERY picky.

Where do you recommend?

My grandparents used to take my sister and I up to Sawmill Creek back in the day. Haven't been in years obviously, but I remember it being decent back then. Probably like a 15-20 minute drive from Sawmill to CP.

Most of the chain hotels around there are okay. We've stayed at the Fairfield Inn (a bit away - closer to the turnpike) and thought it was nice. Also stayed at the Quality Inn, Clarion Inn, Comfort Inn and Sleep Inn and they were fine. Realize that wherever you stay it will be loud, with obnoxious teens up until all hours of the night. We spent a night in Fremont (Comfort Inn and Suites) a couple weeks ago on our way down trying to avoid it and it really didn't help. We also spend a night at Breakers and there were galloping elephants in the rooms above us until all hours of the night.

I would avoid the Econolodge and Rodeway at all costs - just MHO of course, but we had reservations at one and ended up walking out because it was honestly that bad. We stay at "dives" fairly regularly, but these were places we honestly feared for our safety. Personally, I'd try to stay a bit further out, and go for the classier chains - the Marriott brands rather than the Days Inns (and this is from someone who always stays as cheap as possible).

There are a lot of waterparks in the area, and those (Great Wolf, Kalahari, Castaway Bay) are really nice, but will probably run you at least $200 a night in season. Although we booked the very cheapest Breakers room we could and it was close to that with no water park. Might look into that as an option although those will also be loud and chaotic!

Thanks for this info! We'd probably look for something closer to Michigan than the other direction, but I doubt DH would mind a short drive to stay somewhere nice!

Any of those were between the turnpike and CP, so still en route from Michigan. We lived in Berkley for 12 years, and used to spend 30+ days a year at CP, so have a lot of experience there. We did mostly camp though at the CP campground. We tend to try to go back each summer to visit family and friends and also hit CP. Drove from Wisconsin out there. Fremont was about 20 miles from CP. The others are basically CP area hotels.

So if you were going down the night before, they'd be on the way, but if you're driving directly to the park, then going somewhere for the night, then going back the next day, it really doesn't matter. Just seems like the main "strip" (where most of the chains I mentioned are) was SO loud (not external, but inside - groups of families/friends/teens who'd have like 5 rooms reserved and spend the time yelling in the hallways and running back and forth). I realize you can get this anywhere. I know the Fairfield was a bit further back and seemed quieter and somewhat "nicer" to us, but again, it could have just been the nights we were there (know we stayed there two different trips - once when our car broke down and we had to have it towed from the turnpike and they couldn't fix it until the following day).

I'd just avoid the Super Value Inn type places - there are a few "no name" places on that strip that have like rooms with 3 or 4 double beds and large groups of people stay there. I really don't think there are any "upscale" hotels (Hilton, Marriott) around there, or if there are, they were always way out of our price range. Always amazed that hotels in general in that area run higher (much higher at times) than at WDW!

It's crazy, I almost don't even want to go! When I inquired about a CP resort, I was told they will be experiencing a high volume that day... Sept. 14-15! A Monday and Tuesday!!! We thought, after Labor Day and not on a weekend and we'd be set!

We might just go camping now.

Um, I think I might be seeing the problem. Cedar Point isn't open those days and I believe after Labor Day the resorts are only open on the weekends. Here's the link I used to the hours:

Wouldn't want you to head down there and find out the parks weren't even open! Unless you're going down for some special event I'm not aware of, but then I can't believe they woudn't have some resort open for a large group.

Well, have a great time camping! If you do go to CP any time in the fall, our experience is that you can accomplish about 10 times as much on a Sunday as on a Saturday, even if they have shorter hours, so you might shoot for that instead.
