CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

No, the US did not give it approval on it's first trial because they screwed up the dosing and used 2 different dosing protocols by accident and then tried to just combine the results into an average efficacy. US did not like that, and made them run the trial again using one set dosage.

It has not been directly associated with any neurological problems.

Some EU countries halted administration temporarily while they looked into the clotting/stroke cases that popped up. At this point, they believe the vaccine *may* be causing the generation of a specific antibody that is also produced in Covid infections and leads to a specific type of blood clot in the veins in the brain, that is also associated with oral contraceptives (I believe most patients who experienced these clots were women of childbearing age). However, this is just a theory right now, and many scientists are skeptical because there is no reason why this vaccine would cause this to happen when none of the others does (they all work the same way in the body, in terms of creating antibodies against the spike protein).

Thanks. Thats reassuring. The only other negative I read was that it doesn't protect against variants.

I recall seeing the efficacy for the SA variant was EXCEPTIONALLY low, in the failure range with a reported 10%. I think it was around 50% effective with the UK and Brazil variants. AZ is working on a booster to address the variants, like all the other vaccine manufacturers.

Yikes. That's like CA surge levels.

Yep. Fortunately it is only a cluster of relatively small counties where things are so bad right now, but since about half the working-age population of my county commutes into the Detroit metro (and most are in industries like manufacturing and construction that can't be done remotely), there's a real chance that the most densely populated parts of the state will follow our lead.

It does protect against variants but at a lower rate.
If Pfizer and Moderna were to redo their clinical trials at the same time now, I would expect their vaccines to similarly perform at lower efficacy levels all around.

I am a little concerned with AZ vaccine. The US did not give it approval because of problems. I thought one problem was that it caused neurological problems. I also heard it does not protect well against the variants. Does anyone know if it's true. I also read they stopped using it in Europe due to problems. Why would we approve this?
I’ve had the AZ vaccine over here in UK.
its totally safe and reports are out in US that it has 100% efficacy to protect from serious illness.
The UK has had a massive roll out of AZ and had no issues.
European Medical Agency and WHO are fine with it, some unlinked blood clots meant some countries paused roll out, totally without basis.

Please get a vaccine of any description when it’s your turn!

So updates for us:

State opened up Phase 3/4 today. No appointments in the direct area to be found which is expected. The more vaccine supply isn't anticipated til the 29th and after.

My husband was able to snag an appointment in the county above me about 30mins from his work for this Thursday and he will have to bring his letter from his employer. Appointments were gone almost immediately and when he checked at 9am this morning only Thursday was available for that place. Most of the pharmacies in the county participating are the same company who open up appointments on Friday for the following week and we were not eligible last Friday. The 1 Walmart location in the county hasn't updated and is still only allowing even searching for appointments for those in Phase 2.

I kept searching but many of the places were still Phase 2. Checked a bit ago and the health system where I have sought care in the past multiple times and I have an active patient portal (which is required otherwise you have to call to look) updated to include the option to book appointments for phase 1-4. Earlier today it was only for phase 2. None of the locations in my county of the health system had any availability til mid to late April (soonest being April 13 with like 2 appointments for that day). But I was able to get the last appointment (eta: actually not the last appointment, I can see they have one just now showing for half an hour earlier than the one I schedule; I'm keeping the one I scheduled) for this Thursday at a location 2 counties below me about an hour drive (one way) otherwise the availability was mid-April. If it wasn't within my health system (which is primarily just for my county with a few locations in surrounding counties) it would not have been an option and I wouldn't have even tried. I called that location to verify all was fine.

Neither my husband nor I know which vaccine we're getting.

But we're very excited!! I wasn't surprised though about lack of availability (or far off availability) for my area but we knew that surrounding counties may offer more opportunities and they expect people from the surrounding areas just because of where we live in the metro.

That's awesome!! Very happy for both of you :flower1::flower1:

I emailed the county health department this morning to see about getting a second shot closer to home. The county told me they will not give anyone a second dose if their first dose wasn't given by them. But that Walgreens and Kroger will. Kroger won't give me any information until I'm due for my second shot, I have not tried Walgreens yet. I am going to call tomorrow and see if the tribe will schedule me for my second shot now that it is due next week. CVS does not offer vaccines in WI, and the state itself has no plan whatsoever.

My second vax (Moderna) kicked my butt. I had the same ringing in my ears and headache but also fever with EXTREME fatigue for about 48 hours. I did not have COVID arm second time around.

It's awful what is happening in Michigan. We're heading up in NJ too, but not at such a steep pace. I get my first dose today. I've been told it's going to be Moderna.

Ugh, hope you feel better soon!

I'm up for shot #1 of Moderna today. Just anecdotal, but I'm hearing/reading that Moderna shot #2 is the one that kicks most peoples' butts. I'm not sure why, but it's three times the dose (in micrograms) over the Pfizer vaccine, which is as effective. Saw a customer yesterday who is one week post Moderna shot #2. She has health issues, and is allergic to some medications. She was covered....head to toe in hives. It happened to her right after the shot, but then subsided with Benadryl, then came back with a vengeance sending her to the ER over the weekend.

Still...I'm going for it today. I'm in good health and no allergies, so crossing my fingers it'll be ok. We're trending up in my state and I'll take whatever protection I can get.

Hearing about what is happening in Michigan and seeing all the crazy Spring Breakers has me really concerned and feeling anxious again. :worried:

I get Moderna #2 next week Friday. We’ll see what happens.

I'm a couple of weeks past my second shot and fine. The fatigue was the worst but went away with the fever and headache after 48 hours.

My sister had her second Moderna last Thursay. She was fatigued but mom fell at her facility that day so I think the stress from dealing with that likely factored into the level of her fatigue. A few hours in the ER in a large hospital these days will do that.
